Eighty-six down, 76 to go

shanechaseasgAs the All-Star festivities in St. Louis commence, and the best players in the world retreat back to their respective teams, it’s time to hunker down and concentrate on what remains.

For our Philadelphia Phillies, the focal point has been the starting pitching.  Pedro Martinez is joining the team and Roy Halladay has been linked in trade rumors.  Martinez will take his time getting back to the majors, as he will surely need work in the minor leagues before he is in top shape.

As for Halladay, it’s a situation that’s been hashed and rehashed countless times. We will only have to deal with the speculation for a few more weeks as the July 31 trade deadline rapidly approaches.

Beginning the second half of the 2009 season, the Phillies will hit the road to face the Florida Marlins.  Of the remaining 76 games left on the schedule, 40 of them are on the road.  That could be a blessing or a burden, depending on whether or not the Phils continue their hot play away from the Bank.

Focusing on their NL East opponents is also necessary due to the logjam in the division. The New York Mets sit 6 ½ games out of first, and will face the Phillies eight times before the season is through. Atlanta is six back and will see the Phillies nine more times, and the Marlins are four out and play the Phils 12 times over the final three months. Each team is still within shouting distance, so that small four game lead is nowhere near safe.

New York is floundering, but they are a club to keep an eye on.  Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, and others have been missing for an extended period, so look for the Mets to get healthy when it counts.  The Braves offense has been the downfall of their season so far.  They rank in the lower half of the NL in runs scored, but a healthy Chipper Jones and the addition of Nate McLouth could change that.  Florida has the pitching staff to rule the East, but man, do they strike out a bunch at the plate.  The Nats, are, the Nats.

One of the major problems for the Phils had been their play here in their own town. Before a 9-1 home stand ended the first half, the Fightin’s were just 13-22 here in Philly. Now, at 22-23, there is hope that this team is now settled in on their own turf.

All in all, it was a very productive 86 game start for the Phillies, but everyone believes it could be even better. Is a title in the cards again this year? Just 76 games remain. Concentrate, fellas.

Great article Pat. Lots of good information. Here is how I look at the division going into the second half:

Mets – They have been decimated by injuries but I think that the chief source for their failure has been their GM’s unwillingness to make a deal. The Mets chance was in June. If they could have played at least .500 ball in that month they probably would have entered July in first. Thats when they needed to make a move. They don’t want to be playing catch up in September which has been the Phils strongest month lately. If they keep waiting for their injured starts to come back they might find themselves in an impossible hole to climb out of.

Braves – They Braves should have gotten a lot of steam from sweeping the Phillies in Atlanta but a week and a half later they were 6 games out again. Depending on a healthy Chipper Jones is a bit problematic considering how often he gets hurt. The Braves need to prove they can sustain a long run if they want to take the division.

Marlins – The 4 game series again the Phils starting on Thursday will tell us a lot of how this second half will go. Its a series they need to, at least, win in order to remain serious contenders. Their great pitching will always make them dangerous but their lack of fundamentals is very problematic.

Phillies – The Phillies are an amazingly consistant inconsistant team. Year after year they start off bad, get good around May, become horrible in June, right the ship in July, then around September they go on a run. The only difference this year is that they got a 4 game lead. If they follow the same path they should win the division comfertably. Having Halladay would allow the Phils to potentially run away with it early if the other teams don’t make a deal.

    mets88 – I guess you mean 2109.

We have 29 games left with our 3 main competitors. I’d be happy with a split of the 12 games with the Marlins, and we should be able to take 4 or 5 of 8 against the Mets. Braves gave us a lot of trouble before the All-Star break, so there should be some improvement there.

first things first, lets get the 3 peat for NL East Division Champs, then concentrate on postseason. Lets NOT get ahead of ourselves, (i.e like the Mets and their fans)

Brian..as a Mets fan,my first prioritty right now is the Atlanta Braves and I hope the Amazins and fellow Mets fans feel the same way.Mets need to put themselves in a position to take back 3rd place. Its a start and Rome wasn’t built in a day.I think 3 of 4 is possible for the Amazins to win.

Big Dipper – Thanks, though I’m not completely certain that isnt sarcasm given your comments on another post. But I do appreciate it if its sincere.

Thanks also Manziman. It’s a huge second half for this team and if they can jump out early, they can make the other teams pay dearly. Looking forward to it.

Grrrumpy Miner, Ive said it before, I will say it again, you are not like most of your fellow Mets fans, you actually have a clue. The overwhelming amount of Mets fans that come through this site dont have the clue that you do.
