Final Vote In Mind, Victorino Delivers

Shane Victorino has been around the city promoting his candidacy for the Final Vote. Handing out flyers, shaking hands and signing autographs help, but proving why he should be selected is more important. Victorino (2-for-4, 2 SB) did that in the ninth inning.
In the fourth, the Cincinnati Reds took a 2-0 lead on Lance Nix’s RBI single and Ramon Hernandez’s sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Howard returned the favor with a RBI single of his own.
Starter Rodrigo Lopez pitched five innings allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Still, the Phillies had trouble manufacturing runs, leaving nine men on base. Additionally, they were 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies pitching kept them in the game, and one swing off the bat of Jayson Werth tied it in the sixth. Werth’s nineteenth home run of the year made it a new ballgame.
The Phillies bullpen pitched four shutout innings. Ryan Madson’s two innings were key, giving the Phillies a chance in the bottom of the ninth.
Pedro Feliz led off with a single. Paul Bako failed to bunt him over, and Eric Bruntlett flied out. Jimmy Rollins worked a two out walk, and Victorino was given the perfect opportunity to make his campaign speech. He singled to center, scoring Feliz. A walk-off single and that was the ballgame. Phillies win 3-2.

Chan Ho with the Vote for Victorino sign on himself after the game was classic. Chan Ho’s recent successful attempt at a beard is leading me to call him the beard instead of Bruntlett. I’ll just call bruntlett the turd or something.
Great win, despite another feeble offensive night. The lack of pinch hitters that we have on the bench right now is really starting to show. No matter what the matchup is, we are almost always getting dominated.
I am going to bed tonight with dreams of Roy Halladay in red pinstripes and Shane in the all-star game.

Our pitching even though its been good of late, ala Mets, Reds. We need starters. We need a bench. Also Werth is a much better player the Howard. I am tired of Ryan. Just does not get the job done.

Rodrigo Lopez left the game in the 5th with inflammation in his right shoulder.

Great win! Better go vote for Victorino again.
Bad news about Lopez though, he’s been pleasant surprise so far. So if he’s out, who will get the call? Carasco or Carpenter?

Our pinch hitting will improve once Raul gets back. Bruntlett and Coste haven’t been hitting lately, and that’s trouble since they’re our right handed options.
Mayberry, I think he needs more ABs with the IronPigs cause he didn’t look ready to hit major league breaking balls tonight.

I actually thought Mayberry had a good eye for those breaking balls tonight. Sure he was checking his swing on everyone and he did have a bad swing at one of them, but for the most part he was seeing them well. I didn’t like the call when he got rung up.

I say Carpenter gets the nod…if we are shopping Carasco as MLB ready and he fails to deliver, his value plummets and this means the untouchable prospects will become more touchable in deals for top flight pitchers. Then again should Lopez land on the DL, interested teams, who haven’t scouted Carcaso (unlikely), may assume Carasco isn’t ready if he doesn’t replace Lopez and still his value drops. Crud…nothing like pitching to throw a wrench into the works.

Alex – I agree. It was a rather generous strike zone this evening particularly when it came to 3rd strikes…there were at least 14 called 3rd strike outs this evening…I fully support a more generous strike zone but that generosity should apply more so to 1 and 2 strikes. I think this is why Shane fouled off so many pitches against A.Rhodes…I think these 3rd strike outs forced him to swing at so many 3-2 questionable pitches until he Rhodes threw something so in arguably a ball . I think its hard for any pinch hitter to know the nusiances of the ump’s strike zone espcially one like tonight. Although, I wouldn’t mind having this guy call tomorrow’s game with Moyer pitching. This ump’s strike zone would have worked well in Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz era where Moyer is right at home.

Definitely a generous strike zone for the pitchers last night. Most borderline calls went in favor of the pitchers and many calls on pitches off the plate too.

Obviously each at bat in that inning was huge, but Jimmy being able to draw a walk with that gigantic strike zone speaks volumes in how far he has come in the past week.
Keep it up J Roll !!!

I don’t think Carpenter will get the nod for anything. Lopez is not scheduled to start until who knows when. The Phillies have 4 more games so Lopez does not have another start until after the all star break. Between now and when games resume I am sure he will be fine.

Can Amaro please fix our bench? Having Bruntlett pinch hitting in key situations late in the game is embarrassing. The guy is a lifetime .230 hitter for crying out loud! And don’t get me started on Paul Bako.

I agree, I think our pathetic excuse for a bench is more of a need than pitching. It sounds crazy but late in the game when we need a pinch hitter I have absolutely no faith in anyone on the bench except Stairs and Dobbs, and that is only because of what Dobbs has done lately. It’s embarrassing.

I also agree with the bench comments. Why do the Phils have 3 catchers on the roster? And Bruntlett? I think Donald could come up and hit higher than .140.

Rube will fix our bench. If he’s really gung ho about upgrading to Halladay, he’ll fix our bench. What choice do we have? You know you’ve lost when TMac is calling Eric Bruntlett our last hope.

Was that Lt. Frank Drebin behind the plate last night? He was calling everything a strike. that’s the reason the score was so low. But I can’t stand when I see that. Nobody is paying money to see the umpire. They want to see the players decide the game.
Eric Bruntlett- The baseball equivalent of a punt. I have long been a proponent of the theory that the more you curse Eric Bruntlett- the better he hits. I was at both games last year when he came up with huge 9th inning hits- against the Astros and the Mets. And both times I was cursing him out. The problem this year is that most people just change the channel when he comes up to bat, and I don’t blame them. So you need to watch him and curse him out when he is batting. Either that or Amaro has to find a righthanded hitter playing independent ball or something. Can we steal Kevin Mench away from the Hanshin Tigers?

Jason Donald needs to play EVERYDAY.. .since he’s still developing.. he’s not a bench player.. maybe in September when his minor league season would be over (if he’s still here) .. but Eric Bruntlett not hitting the cover off the ball from the bench won’t be the difference between us winning the NL EAST
Dobbs is hitting now because he’s getting regular at-bats.. Mayberry isn’t hitting right now because he’s not getting regular at-bats.. there is a definite connection
Paul Bako actually called a hell of a game last night… the strike zone that was wide enough to stretch from dugout-to-dugout also helped!!

It’s nice to see Dobbs back to where he was. Didn’t he get regular ABs when Ryan Howard’s Corpse played first base last April and May?
And Don M, where have you been? I haven’t seen you post here in awhile.

Mayberry is HR or bust. Werth has moved into the realm of untouchale. Look at his numbers, hes on pace for a 30HR 100+ RBI season! Thats HUGE for this taem. You CANT trade him now. Its Mayberry that goes if any of the OF. Not Victorino, not Werth.
Have you even paid attention to Werth’s production this season? Hes become the ONLY RH power force in the lineup. They need MORE RH power, not less.

Dobbs was hitting in the .100s two months ago, then in the .200s a month ago, and now he’s hitting in the .300s
The guy needed playing time, plain and simple. At least something good came out of RAUUUUUUL’s injury.
And vote for Shane Victorino… voting ends at 4

fiscal year-end stuff at work.. and then went on vacation over the 4th of july..
but it was in upstate NY so I got to watch us sweep the Mets since it was on new york TV
…
none of the regulars are getting traded.. because, as Amaro said, you don’t ADD by SUBTRACTING … Werth or Victorino leaving means our lineup isn’t as dangerous.. and adding a pitcher that goes in every 5th game doesn’t look so great when you would weaken your everyday lineup to acquire him
The key is BALANCE.. in the field, the lineup, and the rotation.. we didn’t win the World Series last year only because of an un-hittable Cole Hamels … we needed solid performance from Myers, Blanton, Moyer and the bullpen too..
So getting Halladay would look great on paper.. but Moyer is done soon.. Halladay wouldn’t get paid enough to stay here, if we also wanted Hamels.. Myers is gone.. and if we got Halladay, we would have to trade Happ, and/or Carrasco- Drabek etc..
Halladay…It’s taking too much of our future away for a move that would look great on paper, but wouldn’t guarantee ANYTHING..

Manny.. you hit it dead-on. and I think we can expect his average to dip again though when his playing time decreases .. with Ibanez back in the lineup
that is why I hardly ever get on the Miguel Cairo’s, Chris Coste’s and Eric Bruntlett’s of the world.. because if we’re counting on them to hit .300 and to win games for us.. than we really have bigger problems to worry about

I was at the game last night…
J Reed made a good observation… the strike zone expanded with 2 strikes last night and it was really frustrating for both teams.
Mayberry rocketed a pitch just foul… he did take a few bad swings at breaking pitches and fell behind in the count but he fought back.
Jimmy Rollins showed why he is so important to this team last night… he made two spectacular plays in the field that very few SS would have made and he made both of them look easy. He’s definitely not trying to get back to .300 with one swing anymore; on at bat at a time.
Once Ibanez gets back, we’ll have Dobbs on the bench again… a big time shot in the arm for an over-used bench.

That one Rollins play.. I think it was Lance Nix at 1st base… Nix was definitely safe.. he beat the throw, and Howard’s foot was off the bag.
but I’ll take it..
yea, the home plate ump really, really struggled last night.. but they get graded, and i’m sure that will get noted, and he won’t get to work playoff games.

Geoff….also, don’t forget that Werth is probably going to have 30 steals or close to it by the end of the season as well. He is truly coming into his own as a major offensive threat….yeah, trading him would be a HUGE mistake and probably won’t happen.

We dont even know what they asked for or what Ruben offered yet, so lets take it easy with Halalday. Its all guesswork until we hear real names surface in leaked discussions.

Indeed. I also feel that its a mistake to trade JA Happ. I think thats subtracting too. Given Ruben’s stated philosophy I dont feel that Happ will be traded.

There were a couple of close plays…… being at the park, you don’t have the benefit of instant replay. The best play that he made was the one where he fielded a groundball, almost falling over forward, 10-15 feet behind second base, and made a strong throw across his body to get the guy running to first. The fact that he stopped the ball, which was hit pretty hard, before it got to the outfield was remarkable and then to make the throw… I was in awe.

I would never get rid of Werth. He is streaky but can hit. Runs the bases, great fielder. Get rid of the waste Howard. Takes bad pitches. Hits one homer a month. Waste.

I think a very underrated part of that 9th inning was Rollins. We keep talking about his inability to be patient at the plate, but he was money in the 9th last night, taking every pitch and working a walk to put Feliz in scoring position for Victorino. Obviously Victorino’s hit was the big play, but after Bako’s embarrassing bunt attempt, and Bruntlett’s predictable weak fly ball, Rollins’ walk was huge.

Yea, that Ryan Howard is a total bum. All he did last year was lead the league in Home Runs and RBI. Who cares if he is about to become the quickest Phillie to ever reach 200 homeruns? Who cares if he puts asses in the seats, which then allows the Phillies to pay other players? Rookie of the Year and MVP are the two most overrated awards in sports. But everybody wants to keep him around because of his tendency to carry the team when gets hot for 6 weeks at a time. Maybe we can trade him for a sack of bats. We can get Travis Lee to play first for us again.

Yeah, that Ryan Howard totally stinks. No team would ever want him playing for them. Rico Brogna for President!

I would take Werth over Howard any day of the week. He’s a better overall player. Period. HRs and RBIs are not the ultimate measure of a player. Werth goes out every day and tries. Howard phones it in 60% of the time. It is painful to watch Howard with two strikes against him, waiting for that slider low and away.

In all the talk about Halladay, who we would or wouldn’t give up to get him, etc., there’s still one unanswered question: Does he WANT to come here at all? He’s got a no-trade clause in his contract. It may not make a bit of difference who we offer or how much he would cost. I’m in my 50′s and remember a time when the big-league team and the farm system were both total garbage, and I don’t want to wipe out our farm system ever again. It would be just our Philly luck to get this guy and then have him fall down the steps in the dugout and break his arm!
