Chicago Cubs (47-44) at Philadelphia Phillies (52-38)

Rich Harden (6-6, 5.06 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (6-4, 4.44 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 69

The Phillies will attempt their tenth straight victory.  They haven’t won ten in a row since 1991 when they won 13 straight.

The rain wiped out Joe Blanton’s last start after 1.1 innings.  He gave up two runs on 24 pitches, but luckily for him, the game was postponed.  The rescheduled game will not be until September, but Blanton will start today, three days after the washout.  In his last nine starts, Blanton is 4-1 with a 2.44 earned run average.

After blowouts, the Phillies always seem to have trouble scoring in the following night.  After a ten-run outburst, the Phillies need to keep up their offense against a struggling Rich Harden.  Harden has a 5.06 ERA, but was better in his last start.  Granted, he faced the Nationals, but on the road he is 5-1 with a 2.17 ERA.

Woodchuck Dry and DarkYour Gameday Beer – Amstel
No, not Amstel Light…Amstel, it’s big brother. Named after the river that flows through Amsterdam, Amstel tastes like a mix between Heineken and Bud. It has the complexity of Heineken (not to mention it’s owned by them) without the bite – definitely a macrobrew.  Around Holland you can pick up a can of Amstel in vending machines which is most convenient when you don’t know the language. I’d recommend a fancy hot dog with all your preferred toppings tonight. – By Brian

Howard has to go to Slider class…he transformed himself into a gold glove caliber fielder and improved his AVG…I can’t help think that with a little guidance he could learn how to pick up the slider’s rotation. He’s been rung up on it so many times that learning by attrition isn’t happening. Same with Werth. Granted Harden was dealing tonight but I can’t help think our RISP numbers would improve if these cats wouldn’t flail at these out pitch sliders.

Sorry Philly fans but you have to get rid of brunlett. he is useless. bring up a guy from AAA. My god is that bad.

    jesus bruntlett. take a pitch

All three guys. swing away. This cubs team is bad. we need the sweep.

I agree j reed but they are out pitches for a reason…it means the majority of guys are swinging at them. Have you seen some of the pitches that the Cubs have chased tonight? They have been equally awful.

    quick inning for Condrey

Yeah I was on Bruntlett’s side for a while but he obviously has lost the ability to hit major league pitching. The only hit I can remember him getting in the last month or 2 was against Paul Janish, the shortstop that the Reds brought in during the 22-1 game.

maybe howard won’t strike out this time up…13 innings is enough

Rumor has it that we might trade Kendrick for Willingham from The nationals. so that will be our right handed back. bye bye to the beard.

Havoc, Bruntlett is no longer the beard. Chan Ho is. Bruntlett will henceforth be known as either The Terd or The Taint.

No Stuart that would be bye bye to Mayberry. The beard is our only utility infielder that can play all the infield positions.

excuse me I mean “the terd” can play all the infield positions

Yeah I forgot all about Mayberry. Well it would mean bye bye to all his pinch hit opportunities. Willingham I feel would get most of them, he would be our right handed bat on the bench

This team is playing at an unreal level right now. Even when they could not hit they still won. Not something that happened very often in the beginning of the year.

    Roids.

Just kidding, it’s probably just gum or something.

Chew is definitely allowed because Pat the Bat chews ample amounts of it. I’m pretty sure Chase does too. I think Raul’s is gum, though.

Oh ok. but is any one else watching espn? and see what they are saying about us, like if we get halladay he might make us good enough to go three straight, and then the segment on our winning streak and it made us look so bad ass as a team, and as a city. just my opinion.

If something is working this well right now, why change it? we have pedro coming up someyear, myers will be back in the pen, starters have been great, etc, etc. maybe a hitter to replace bruntlett

    phils-ftw-
i’ve heard alot of guys use a mixture of chew and bubble gum…nasty

Now perhaps you don’t see pitchers handing out greenies too position players too much these days, and the coffee pots are no longer label “leaded” or”unleaded”, but there’s still chew. I mean if you were a manager no way would you want half your team to simultaneously suffer from nicotine withdrawal. I read that it’s discouraged but players still do it. I wonder if a mid-season enforced ban on dip would be reflected by a league wide sizable drop in both team and player stats. Rauls chews…I worked in trades for a long time and have been around alot of dippers…can’t tell you how many times I put my hands and tools in those puddles of nasty, smells like ben-gay spit … i can look at anyone and tell if they are or were once dippers. If you do it long enough you get scar tissue where the nicotine bites into the inside of your lower lip…that’s how it the nicotine gets into the bloodstream. Raul didn’t get to the show until he was 30…that’s alot of frustrating years at AAA, alot of frustrating hours spent away from his friends and family, alot frustrating hours on trains and buses, alot hours spent in the hot sun waiting on some sub par pitcher who need 30 pitches to get 3 outs….if they didn’t dip they would bite their finger nails down to the nail beds in boredom….So yeah, i think he dips or at the very least did because he has the tell tale lower lip bulge that at first glance you might mistaken for an underbite. l think many players who sport soul patches these days have inadverently found that beyond fashion, it or (goatee) helps disguise this bulge beside catching errant stands of tobacco spit.
