Philadelphia Phillies (58-40) at Arizona Diamondbacks (43-58)
J.A Happ (7-1, 2.97) vs. Yusmeiro Petit (0-5, 7.68 ERA)
Time: 9:40 p.m at Chase Field
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 108
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
It’s been a busy day for the Phillies and they haven’t even played a game yet. They’ll attempt to sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight.
J.A Happ survived the trade rumors–for now. He is coming off his first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs against the Cardinals. Happ has had a solid season and looks to build a new win streak tonight against a Diamondbacks’ lineup that has scored only one run off a Phillies starter.
The Phillies have a good chance to score runs off Yusmeiro Petit, who has very bad numbers. In addition, if the Diamondbacks defense continues to play poorly, the Phillies could be looking at double-digits in the runs column.
Your Gameday Beer – Sawtooth Ale
Reader Chris recommends tonight’s beer, Sawtooth Ale from the Left Hand Brewing Company in Colorado. It comes in honor of the Phillies new look rotation – chock full of lefties. This medium-bodied amber ale is well balanced with nutty, caramel flavors. It’s also a bitter, so if you’re bummer about not getting Halladay this beer is for you. Left Hand recommends pairing it with grilled salmon. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

Miles, calm down, my friend. I’ve never come down on you like that for any comments you’ve made. I never will, either; that isn’t what this blog is all about. All I’m saying is that their offense was good enough last year to win a title, but the pitching came through for the most part in the playoffs and that Phils have to keep making adjustments to maintain their high level of play. Remember: teams are going to be coming after them, especially with the playoffs near, just because of what they accomplished last year.
You and I can agree, however, that this cast of characters should be an excellent fit for the newest Phillie.

Victorino had a bloody nose. The doctor said he would not get as many nosebleeds if he would just keep his finger out of it.

I think they have two little holes left after the Lee-Francisco trade.
1 – Can they get a utility infielder who can at least do something at the plate ONCE IN A WHILE?
2 – It would be nice to have another reliever good enough to come in later in a key situation and get people out. You can never have enough power arms coming out of the bullpen in the playoffs. I dont trust Romero since hes come back and I would like another option there aside from Romero and Eyre from the left side. Grabow would be cheap probably, thats fine with me. Mad teams are after Sherrill so I doubt theyll get him at this point.

It sounds like they are counting on Myers being the power arm to add to the pen. I would be surprised if the Phillies made another move before the deadline.

Goddamit, that 3rd strike to Ibanez was way out of the zone.

The ump has been calling that outside strike all night, the Phillies hitters have yet to figure that out. That has been their weak point all season. They do not make in game adjustments very well.

I just checked and since June 16 Bruntlett is 2-31 and 1 of those hits was off of Paul Janish, the Reds shortstop, and the other one was a bunt base hit. Is that even possible?

Werth is going to hit a solo home run, and then the Phillies will have 3 horrible at bats. Stairs strikes out to end the game.

True, in game adjustments are critical. Phillies have a hard time adjusting to different scenarios. Don’t know why that is. Anybody?

That is BAD. Rlubens gotta get someone else in there who can look like a professional at the plate. Francisco helps the bench a LOT. But Bruntlett cannot hit major league pitching, its a good thing he can play every position.

Does anyone know where Flande went, he was #34 two weeks ago at Reading and tonight Escolona was wearing 34??

Geoff, it is a terrible thing that Bruntlett can play every position. If not, we could just cut him. But since he can play every position, he will have a spot on the roster.

Well Escalona got demoted and he may has seniority over Flande so maybe he got to claim the number. I’m pretty sure they are both still at AA.

Stuart, I said that two nights ago about the runs. Wish we could trade three of those extra runs for tonight. Wait, let’s just call Ruben. I’m sure he will be able to do that for us. He got Lee without losing major prospects.

I love how wheels explains that if the ball hits the top of the wall and goes over it is a homerun. Noooo really I didn’t know that!!!
Thank you mr. Point out the obvious

No halladay. Takes the whole farm system.
Phils can easily win it all with this roster.
Bruntlett game winning hit game 7 at yankee stadium. I can see it now.
Did i mention I was drinking?

HA, Miles – that was a great stat to find. I can’t believe no one in the front office or in the dugout can straighten him out, can you? I never like to browbeat a player, but what does it say about this guy if his last legitimate hit came when Michael Jackson was still alive and when Chris Coste was still on the Phils’ roster?

The Giants are going to have a pretty good lineup now. I think they WILL win the wild card and you are potentially looking at the Phillies’ NLDS opponent.
Rowand (healthy?)/Torres
Sanchez
Sandoval
Garko
Molina
Renteria
Winn
Velez/Lewis

Shane left with a knee contusion….shit. I guess its good we got Francisco because he will probably have to start now and we will move Werth to center if Shane has to sit down.

Was that why there was a delay? I’m at the mercy of MLB Gameday. Can’t afford to lose Shane.

Bruntlett in center for the rest of the year?
Shane has a knee bruise. With the standings and situation I dont mind any of the core guys getting some rest. Whats important is Sept and Oct. I also like a 6 man rotation for a month!

Thanks, Miles, I wasn’t sure about that. They brought him in late in the game and everyone was insisting it was Flande because he was still listed as # 34 in the program, but I didn’t think they’d bring in a starter for relief, although the guy next to me said they do that in the minors.

Morris – i think your right…and this isn’t defense of brunlett per se. Is it me or are all these young prospect teams (particularly in the NL) who, other than the Pirates can’t field a lick…although since the Pirates traded Jack Wilson to the Marniers and Sanchez to Giants, i expect to see those errors skyrocket. About the only thing going up for Buckos other than there losses. Clemente is rolling over in his grave…

That “How to Field like the Washington Nationals” vhs tape is really paying off for the D-backs.
