Hamels Outpitches Haren

It’s amazing Dan Haren has allowed only four unearned runs during the entire season with the defense he is backed with. The Diamondbacks continue to make poor defensive plays and the Phillies took full advantage.

In the first inning, Cole Hamels allowed a solo home run to the second batter of the game, Ryan Roberts. It looked to be a long night for the Phillies, who trailed 1-0 against arguably the best pitcher in baseball this season.

In the third inning, Shane Victorino said aloha to Haren’s fastball up in the zone. The homer tied the game at one, and Victorino was far from finished.

With one out in the fifth, Hamels doubled to start a rally. Jimmy Rollins reached base on Stephen Drew’s error, and Hamels headed to third. The Phillies were in perfect position to take a lead. They did so on Victorino’s ground-rule double.  Victorino finished the night a triple shy of the cycle.

Jimmy Rollins scored on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error. Chase Utley grounded to first, and Rollins was a dead duck at the plate. However, Utley made a terrific move, running in the throwing lane, but without interference. It worked, because Chad Tracy airmailed the throw, and the Phillies took a 3-1 lead.

The Phillies were able to knock out Haren after five innings.

Hamels looked like one of the league’s finest tonight, returning to his old form. He wiggled out of a couple jams, but overall was brilliant. He pitched eight innings, allowing one run on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine. It’s been a while since Hamels has been able to tally up the strikeouts, but he did today against the Diamondbacks.

Jayson Werth’s RBI ground out in the seventh gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead, and they needed every bit of it with Brad Lidge coming in for the save. Lidge gave up a two-run home run to Mark Reynolds, but sweat through the save.

The 4-3 win give the Phillies four wins in a row, and the series against the Diamondbacks. Tomorrow, they’ll go for their fourth sweep in July.

I wouldn’t be against going out and getting another bullpen arm, like a Capps from the Buccos or something…

because I feel confident about every part of this team…except Lidge.

    him in october this year…yikes

I like the chances the Phils have of a sweep tomorrow. Happ vs. the Dbacks worst pitcher? Yes please.

    Its Shanerific!

I did not have the pleasure of watching the game, only on the internet.
Did Cole look out of sorts in the first? It sounds like that was the thinking, he sure turned it around.
Cole finishes the month of July 3-1 with a 4.38 ERA. He has pitched both like Cole and like ca-ca. We know what this kid has, when will he bring it out for good this year and keep it out (tonight was awesome)?

Please fix the closer Ruben, this is too much

Tom Verducci cant believe the Phillies have not made this trade yet. He says the Phillies have to. I agree.

Awesome game by Hamels and great patience at the plate. I’d love to see the following.

    2009

    Hamel
    Blanton
    Washburn
    Happ
    Moyer/Martinez/Lopez

    2010
    Hamels
    Blanton
    Happ
    Drabek
    Moyer/Lopez/Myers

Dude, if the Phils get Halladay this team will just completely crush everyone at every stage, regular season and post season. They’re already crushing the regular season, then add Halladay and their potential for what they can do goes way off the charts. Halladay, Hamels and a Blanton who has been amazing, add to that an offense that is leading a ton of offensive categories? WS ring please!

Best Phillies July ever? Wondering if anyone knows what that would be and how close they are to it.

Mark Reynolds is having a monster year. Too bad he’s playing for a team that looks like it’s auditioning for a blooper reel.

Hamels had a very nice outing. It makes me feel better to see him pitch deep and rack up the strikeouts. I agree with marty. Our bullpen seems to need more help than our starting pitching right now.

@phils_ftw: If the Phillies pick up Halladay they’ll be dominant for 8 innings and then Lidge will blow the game. The Phils will be lucky to win the NLDS with a closer sporting a 7+ ERA. It doesn’t seem like starting pitching is really the problem this team needs to confront.

Agreed. Without a closer they are going nowhere. Has a team ever won a World Series with a bullpen by committee approach?

Are you all FREAKING kidding me? Thats 20 of 22 and people still find a way to whine about Lidge. I thought he got the save?! Even if he did make it interesting. It was his 3rd appearence in a row!!!!

Last I checked, even King Cole gives up HR’s. Am I the only one who thought Brad showed alot shaking that HR off, then going 1-2-3?

Mark my words: HE IS OUR BEST OPTION AS CLOSER, HE WILL BE FINE.

So, is the idea to lower the sights from Halladay in order to afford a quality closer and a starter?
Do we agree that there is no way to put the closing role into an unstable situation (such as Brett Myers)? We need a closer badly… perhaps that is the focus of Ruben & company – quality starter (Lee? Washburn???) and a closer. One that can be relied on that currently plays for a team that is out of it. Sherill from the Orioles comes to mind.

It’s very difficult to get a gauge on where Lidge is at right now, a closers going to give up runs no matter how much he’s expected to be a steel-trap. On the positive side he hasn’t blown a save this month but he is giving up runs. Last nights runs surrendered came pitching for the third straight day so maybe it was to be expected, maybe he’s still hurting, maybe he’s back maybe he isn’t we just don’t know.

All we can do is just hope Lidge feels strong going into October, would be very surprised if the Phils acquired anyone more than a middle-reliever with late inning experience.

We need a closer badly??? That’s just a joke of a statement, this isn’t a bullpen where the saves are being blown daily by committee… Lidge hasn’t blown a freakin’ save all month!

Lets be real, were going to win the division unless a major collapse occurs so as long as Lidge feels good in the post-season it really doesn’t matter how he pitches up to it as long as there’s moderate progress.

Looking past the division into the playoffs and hopefully the big dance, the competition will be tougher and the bottom of the 9th will probably have no wiggle room.
True Lidge has not blown a save this month. As a matter of fact he has 6 saves in 6 opportunities even though his ERA in July is nearly 6.
Does anybody feel comfortable going into the post season with our current closer?
I don’t believe in magic NJ. I don’t believe that “… as long as Lidge feels good..” will be enough to bring a second WS championship to Philadelphia.
The Phillies won last year because of our pitching, Lidge was at the center of it all. This is not a new revelation NJ. Regardless of how potent the offense is, without the insurance of a quality closer our chances are not so good.

NJ – Brad needs to get it going. Its the 29th and the Blue Jays say nothing is going on for Halladay. So I guess thats it? The deadline has passed. According to to Ricciardi, if nothing was happening on the 28th he was gonna pull Roy off the table. I’m confused.

What I’m saying is how do we know Brad hasn’t got it going? Were not in the clubhouse and on here too many scrutinise from a place looking for every single bit of bad than even want to take a moment to hope or think of the good. There’s time for Lidge to turn his season around if he hasn’t already.
Brad gave up a 2 run shot in his third straight day and two runs in a game he shouldn’t have pitched, ‘closing games’ his ERA’s around 4 this month, not great but lets let the coaches worry about Brad and route for him.

We don’t ‘need’ a new closer, we need our closer to be better. Name all the guys you want- Sherrill, Scott Downs, Cordero… We’re not trading for another closer and I’d rather expect Lidge to be sharp by October than think anyone we could trade for would be so much better it would justify putting Lidge on the scrap-heap.

I think too many EXPECT a second championship so much their routing for reasons to hang their hats guys in other uniforms being the reason if the team doesn’t repeat it will be perceived as utter failure. I sometimes wonder if it would be easier to be a Yankees fan…

Dipsy- You of all people know the BS Riccardi is spouting, there’s still as much chance as there was yesterday of Halladay being dealt.

NJ – No one like it when your closer has a 7.00 + era in late July.

I try to look at the positive.
Looking at our 4 starters (leave position 5 out until we know if it’s Pedro or Lopez)
They have 20 starts, with a 12-3 record in July. An ERA from these 4 at an astounding 2.63 with 130.2 innings pitched – spearheaded by JB with an ERA of 1.21 in his 4 July starts.
Although these numbers are eye popping, is the JB we see now the same Blanton we can expect on a consistent level for the remainder of the season?
On the other hand, we lost Condrey (huge piece from last year), Romero & Durbin – all key in last years dream come true.. we need help in the pen and a starter.

I’m just surprised at the level of anger towards our guys that sometimes comes up here. I have my doubts of course but I’m not going to believe Lidge can’t get it done in this coming post-season and if something were to happen I wouldn’t be joining the inevitable lynch-mob outside his door.

I don’t like Lidge sporting a 7+ ERA, insurance may be necessary but that doesn’t mean trading for another teams closer unless your going to put Lidge on the 60 day DL and say his career in Philly’s over. Don’t see that happening any time soon.

Dipsy- I heard I believe it was Buster Olney who said yesterday it would likely take one top of the rotation pitching prospect (obviously heading a package) for the Indians to really consider trading Cliff Lee.

Got to love the phillies nation, you all really think Lidge throws that pitch if they are only up one or two runs? It is the walk to the first guy that is frustrating, he did not not want to walk the a second guy and bring the tieing run to the plate, and groved a slider that hung and he got rocked out of the park. He settled down and throw strikes and got three outs, and the save, is that not what a closer is suppose to do, get the save, save the game. Well he did that,
Does he need to get his head back in the game before the playoffs, yes, are the phillies going to trade for a new closer no. Get you head out of your asses and appreciate a win,

The whole reason Riccardi put up this “deadline” of the 28th was because Halladay was scheduled to start today. I guess he didn’t want Doc going out to the mound with all of this looming…which makes no sense because its been looming for weeks. If the deadline passes and Halladay is still in Toronto than his value will decrease exponentially. He will go from a year and a half player to a 3 month rental. At this point, Riccardi would almost be stupid not to trade him. If he just lets him go and he gets 2 picks for it then he will essentially be going back on everything he has said which is that he wanted at the very least one ML ready guy.

I think he has to trade Halladay, problem is, the Phillies seem to be the only match and come 4pm Friday, they may have already addressed the issue with Lee, Washburn or whoever else comes about.

@NJ: I don’t think that making a trade for a closer is a good idea at this point, any more so than trading for Halladay. The team does need to understand what has happened physically or mentally to a guy that had an ERA below 2 last year and is above 7 now. If he can’t get his act together (entire month of August: ERA below 4, WHIP below 1.5, K/BB better than 2.5:1) then he can’t be trusted in the postseason and either Madson or Myers closes. The fact that he hasn’t blown a save yet in July is more about luck than anything else for me.

Trading for Halladay>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Trading for a closer.

The Phils will most likely get a RH bat and another reliever (not a closer) to help the pen after Friday’s deadline

I agree Jim. There’s time for Lidge to prove he can be the guy in the post-season and there will be a spell of games soon that’ll either make or break him. If he can’t get through, I think the two guys you mentioned are fully capable of coming out and winning the job.

I agree Jim and NJ… I’m still very worried about Lidge (to make things worse, did anyone see the Pen in which he narrates all the things he has to do before and during the game? It involved some type of exercise for the KNEE –fuc*ing knee– and lots of stretches and stuff…. and he joins the rest of the guy in the pen like in the 4th or 5th inning) but I also believe that he’s gonna go through a spell that will make/break him. If he fails, then we’ll just have to rely on MadDog and/or Myers for the latter part of the season and postseason…

I was freaking out when he gave up that 2-run HR yesterday with 0 outs, ESPECIALLY after missing his spots and walking the leadoff hitter… Everytime Lidge walks the leadoff hitter, bad things are bound to happen… and he KNOWS that, shaking his confidence even more. But he got his act together after the HR… which keeps me hopeful that he’ll somehow turn around his season and we won’t need to make a major bullpen move.

As for Hamels, THERE’S YOUR ACE!

Going head-to-head with arguably the best pitcher in the NL, and coming out with the Win.
