Opinion: Do Not Overlook the Other Pressing Needs

It was only a few years ago, but it now seems like forever that GM Ed Wade proclaimed that the Philadelphia Phillies were a small market team. My, how the Phillies have grown. These days, not only are the Phillies a big market club, but they are now front runners for acquiring one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.

GM Ruben Amaro has been outspoken about his intentions to improve his ball club. He has said all of the right things to the media, including the statement that the Phillies can add payroll and also that he has contacted numerous teams about acquiring players to make his already strong team stronger. Amaro seems as if he is not the type to sit on his hands and that is great for a Phillies fan. However, has Amaro along with the rest of the Phillies faithful been too blinded by the gold that is Roy Halladay, to see the other pressing needs that may almost be as important as acquiring the top of the line starting pitcher?

As far as our starting eight position players are concerned, we have no needs. Our line-up is solid through and through and may be one of the best in all of baseball. We have a prolific offense that can score runs at will. Sure, they can be streaky at times, but we may have seen the worst drought this year through a terrible stretch in June. They survived that stretch and came out relatively unscathed.

Look past our starting eight and we start to see where the problem lies,  The Phillies are seriously lacking in the depth department. Although infielder Greg Dobbs has been better of late, he has certainly not been the same player as last year. Lack of playing time could account for his struggles as his average improved with the absence of Raul Ibanez.

The Phillies other back-up infielder Eric Brunlett has been awful at the plate this season batting a weak  .139 this year. Defensively Brunlett has been o.k., but with outfielder Pat Burrell now gone, his services as a defensive replacement have not been as needed. If either Chase Utley or Jimmy Rollins go down with an injury this season, Brunlett will be a canyon sized hole in the line-up.

Rookie outfielder John Mayberry Jr. has been equally as bad. Batting .180 so far this year, Mayberry has shown so far that pinch hitting is not his forte’. Although he adds power from the right side, his inability to hit a breaking pitch has been his ultimate downfall. Furthermore, Mayberry doesn’t seem to be crisp as a defensive outfielder either.

One bright spot has been outfielder Matt Stairs. So far this season in 60 at bats, he is batting .283 with four home runs and 13 runs batted in. Even though his defense is suspect, he does offer Charlie Manuel a nice left handed power option coming off the bench.

It doesn’t take a master of sabermetrics to see the Phillies offensive numbers dropped dramatically in Ibanez’s absence. Overall as a team they struggled. If Utley or Rollins were to go down with an injury, using Brunlett as a replacement is a scary proposition.

Ruben Amaro cannot get lost in his pursuit of Halladay. He needs to realize that the depth of this team is shallow and needs to be deeper. Moves need to be made. I am not in the business of speculating who the Phillies may get to strengthen the bench, but I hold out hope that Amaro is already in the process of acquiring help. Amaro certainly has minor league options to look at but as the post season nears the Phillies will need a player with big league experience. As it stands now, the Phillies bench is woefully inadequate and Amaro needs to improve upon it.

I agree, they still need a good RH pinch hitter (maybe Millar can be sough after in part with Halladay).

Once they make a trade for a starter their bullpen will improve – PRESUMABLY – with Bastardo sliding over to the bullpen. He would be a great asset in the playoffs to come in and throw heat out of the pen.

We can expect no less than three new arrivals between now and the August waiver-deadline. Wed obviously need a starter now before the regular deadline but the other two parts can be had in August.

1 – Frontline SP (we all know this already)
2 – RH Pinch Hitter (can be had in August)
3 – Bullpen arm (August as well)

Pen, we have options out of the minors. Bastardo throws gas, and could be great from the pen. RH pinch hitter, lots of old fogeys available. Get the one with the smallest ego. Frontline SP, at this point its Halladay or nothing. Everyone else is either a # 3 or injured or not available.

Honestly, Mayberry was not ready to be up in Philly. He is young and needs to be playing each day to improve on his stuff. He was slow to get going in lehigh valley, but he did show promise.

Bruntlett sucks, Dobbs needs more playing time, we need some power off the bench…someone other than Stairs who has the ability to get some homers, runs in.

Pedro as a starter will increase reliance on the bullpen that is shaky, at best. Look at tonight….the starter did his job, the bullpen lost it.

Having a big name starter can only help so much, ask the mets and yankees

I want them to get Garrett Atkins from Colorado. I think he’d be a perfect fit. He can play 3B as well as LF. He’s also a good RH bat.

How many teams have a good hitting backup catcher and middle infielder? If those guys could hit they would be starters! That’s why Coste was so valuable on the bench. He was a backup C who could pinch hit; apparently until this year when he supposedly he did poorly at both.
From the minors both Marson and Donald could be excellent replacements since they could be future starters. Do we want to rely on them during a playoff run?
I think backup catcher is hopeless. Bako is learning the staff and other than Marson we are just looking at scrap heap guys. Is Johnny Estrada available? At least he can hit.
Middle infielder is quite tough to find. Good fielder with pinch hitting and pinch running skills? What prospect do you want to give up to get Willie Bloomquist or Jerry Hairston or an injured David Eckstein? Maybe we can sign Lugo but I’m sure he wants playing time just like all the guys we went after this off-season (Garciaparra, Wigginton, Sheffield).
Now I think it is possible to replace Mayberry with any right handed pinch hitter, a right handed Stairs. Dobbs can field for Ibanez in LF. Stairs maybe a couple days a month in RF. So, Millar, or a similar DH only type could fill that role. We could give up next to nothing for that.

Is Julio Lugo an option now? He’s right handed. an upgrade to Bruntlett offensively and defensively. Seems like a no brainer.
What is the rule with acquiring him? Is it if we sign him this week we take on his old contract and if we wait we can sign a fresh one?

    Joey..
Lugo is available and reports are that the Red Sox would trade him for a fringe minor league prospect and eat all of his remaining two year salary. I think Ruben has to jump at that move, more importantly before the Mets do.

Mayberry may appear to be awful up in the majors but he is not a major league ready player. He has talent and I think he will be a decent player somewhere. Right now he needs to be playing each day, probably down in lehigh valley

Bruntlett is in straight up for defensive purposes. Think about it this way, if anyone on the Phillies gets injured, Bruntlett can play that position adequately and you want to replace him with a .250 pinch hitter?

Pinch hitters just suck, that is why they are on the bench most of the game. Not to mention the fact that most players cant pinch hit anyway — ie Mayberry, Dobbs (though he did well last year, but his average goes up a lot when he plays more), Cairo, and Bruntlett all hit relatively well when they were getting lots of ABs and just couldnt do much of anything when they were put in the pinch hitting role. Though Dobbs is starting to come around.

Lugo would be a nice addition if his is RH batter but I dont know why you would trade for him. He is released. he is older too, so maybe that helps with pinch hitters. I honestly that Stairs is a rarity and that generally pinch hitters are just not going to be good. It is too difficult a role.

the guy that needs replaced on the bench is Mayberry he just doesnt get enough PT to be effective. bruntlett can stay in case of injury, bako is no better or worse than the majority of backup catchers in baseball. Dobbs and Stairs are fine. they need to go get a solid pinch hitter from the right side and move mayberry elsewhere.
