Ruben Amaro said that the Phillies would not know if Pedro Martinez passed his physical until Wednesday. Hours later, Yahoo! Sports reported that Martinez passed his physical. Amaro declined to comment, however a press conference to introduce Martinez is expected tomorrow.
Amaro said that Martinez will need some time in the Minor Leagues before making an impact on the Major League roster. Amaro also said that adding Martinez would not stop the Phillies from pursuing Roy Halladay.
UPDATE (9:35 PM): Pedro Martinez signed a one year, $1 million contract, plus $1.5 million in incentives.

This is good freakin’ news all the way. Sign Pedro and go after Halladay. The only question will be “who to give up for Halladay.”
Martinez is a low risk/high reward player that the Phillies can afford.

What is going to happen to Happ? I don’t want to see him lose his rotation spot or worse, go to another team (even Toronto)

So was Lopez’s injury season ending cause I think his stuff looked good enough to keep him around esp. since as a ex-Rockie he’s pitched in a hitters park. I just don’t get this move, but at least it is inexpensive, although not necessarily low risk.

I think the trade goes Happ, Marson, Donaldson. Selling Happ at his high point is necessary.

CBP is not a hitter’s park anymore…it’s run neutral. When will this myth end?

sell high on happ now while lessening the number of prospects that get packaged with him. happ could go the similar route of a 2007 phillies rookie (kendrick) who is now slumming it up in lehigh. great first season and then “poof” big league hitters have you figured out, drabek’s upside is too much to lose. Marson can be replaced by D’Arnaud and we’ll have to find a 3rd baseman to fill in donald’s future spot

I still think if we dont make a solid run at Halladay Amaro failed, however, seeing how Pedro will “only” cost $1 Mil with 1.5 Mil in incentives vs the originaly estimate of $4 Mil plus incentives, Pedro might work out.

Please stop comparing Kyle Kendrick’s 2007 run with Happ’s solid performance. Last time I checked, J.A. Happ is a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year. He has already pitched plenty of games since last season, including a good outing in the NLCS… it’s not a one-year wonder. He also has a good pitching repertoire, not relying on any single pitch to get through a game. And add to the mix the fact that he has composure on the mound, something that KK lacks big time.

Regarding, Pedro’s signing: I didn’t like it at first, but knowing that it’s only $1M plus incentives, I can’t see how bad this could be… I actually kinda like it cause it immediately gives us more depth… which translates into more time to find that elusive front-line starter to replace Myers in the rotation.

What Manny said about both Happ and Pedro is basically how I’ve felt the entire time. Even though I find great value in Drabek, keeping Happ is more important in my eyes for this season’s run. If you can have Happ and Halladay both leading this team, and Blanton’s solid pitching, Hamels will have to come around eventually to give the Phillies 4 good starters come playoffs.
If Pedro is a bust, oh well. If he turns into something special and helps with the WS run, the advantage has to go to the Phils.

As of now Pedro becomes the 5th starter behind Moyer, I think it would be a HUGE mistake to trade Happ, Happ is a proven big league starter and will be for years to come, I really do not care what Drabek upside may be, it is unproven, and if it is a chose between Drabek or Happ in the package for Halladay it has to be Drabek. IMO this is a no brainer,
Like I posted before, the only thing that worries me about Pedro is can he go 7 innings every fifth day, from what I have heard around he starts to lose velocity after 5 or 6 innings, and with Moyer whom I really like, but he is also a 6 inning guy, how much will this tax the pen down the streach. If they get Halladay without giving up Happ, would Pedro pitch in the pen? I do not mind the signing of him, because you can never have enough pitchers but there is concerns about him no doubt

…Pedro Martinez is now on the DL with a mild right shoulder strain….
WTF
I thought he had said that he felt really healthy lately! What? Did he get injured in the 2 simulated games he pitched? Is this some kind of a joke or does someone have a huge master plan behind the scenes (doubt it)?

its so he can get “rehab starts” without taking up a roster spot.. its a pretty standard move for him to begin on the DL and he’ll come off whenever he’s ready..
Low Risk, High Reward.. good move.. because its probably better than what we had

I’ve said it along….and I agree with some of the posters here, Don M and beta sigma to name a few…..trading Happ would be a mistake at this point. I share the belief that he probably isn’t Cy Young material (but who really knows?) but his numbers….AND….his experience at this point in his career have made a believer out of me. He probably should have made the rotation right out of spring training…..but…..when you think about it……maybe starting the year in the pen was just one more thing that has made him resilient to whatever the Phils want him to do….and had contributed to his success.
