All five Phillies All Stars received at least one at-bat in the 2009 All Star Game. Here is how each Phillie contributed:
Chase Utley: 0-for-2 (groundout, fly out). He made a couple spectacular plays at second base.
Raul Ibanez: 0-for-2 (groundout, pop up)
Shane Victorino: 1-for-2. Singled, scored a run in second inning to tie game at two.
Jayson Werth: 0-for-1 (strikeout). Made a fantastic catch in centerfield.
Ryan Howard: 0-for-1 (strikeout) With two on and two outs in the eighth, Howard had a chance to tie the game, or possibly give the National League the lead. Joe Nathan struck him out on a check swing.
The National League lost for the twelfth time since 1996. With the 4-3 win, the American League will gain home field advantage during the World Series.
Here are some photos of the festivities courtesy of Chris in St. Louis.

Can we give Halladay the Jeltz award for not allowing enough runs to give his soon to be league a win?!?!

Good. I love the NL but I think homefield in the ws is over rated. I would rather have those three games in a row at home. Take one of the first ones and you now have homefield.

OK… all over with now rev up the afterburners – hold on to your seats as this is where the Phils start to separate themselves from the pack –
We now have Pedro, what does that mean? I cannot and never have been able stomach his attitude, as far as I am concerned, he is a Mutt, through and through – whining, nonsense coming out of his mouth – sounds like a mutt – in it for himself. We shall see how long it will be before he starts mouthing off about lack of run support, etc. The important thing, does he remember how to pitch?
This is it, I think the brass of the Phils will do nothing else… but its OK and here we gooooo Phils!

Pedro is a diva, it’s true. But if he beats the Mets just once and we still get Halladay, then it may be fun. It’s possible Pedro might surprise us. The guy was always a great all-around pitcher, with great command, location, and strategy (Varitek was key, of course). Even when he could barely hit 90-91, he could make hitters look bad. His attitude is annoying, but I don’t see him being a savior on this team and, therefore, more of a sidebar story than a circus sideshow. The WSeries, if we make it would hype it up, clearly. What would be the better story, Phils and Pedro v. Boston or Dodgers and Manny v. Boston?

Up in a very similar situation in the 9th inning just a few days ago, Ryan Howard blasted a three run game tying home run against the Pirates. Given the choice, I’ll take the home run when it really mattered and the strike out last night.

Pedro really only pitched 3 years with the Mets… he’ll retire a Red Stocking, that’s for sure.
I have a friend that was wondering why we would take him if no one else would He made almost $12 million with the NYM last year… he burned them BADLY. There is no way that they could re-sign him and keep a clear conscience… now, for $1 million, I think that it’s worth the chance. Throw out last year and Pedro has been consistent throughout his career. Even in 2006 (when his record was a 9-8), he made the all-star team and sported a healthy k/9 and WHIP of 9.3 and 1.108, respectively. His first year with NY, he was 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA. His first year with Boston, he was 19-7 with a 2.89 ERA. His first year with Montreal he was 11-5 with a 3.42 ERA and his first full season as a ML’er, he was 10-5 with a 2.61 ERA. He was also really good in the WBC… it’s not rocket science, he digs the spotlight and he knows that he’ll get paid if he helps us win a WC. Hopefully, he has another good tryout year.

Phillies had 8 at bats.. thats almost 3 full innings of All-Star representation and we get 1 hit. I think the blame for this loss falls squarely on Ryan Howards shoulders.
Btw…. is it me or does Howard look really skinny for Ryan Howard.. i know he lost weight in the off season but it looks like he might be down even more.

I agree with Stuart about Homefield advantage – I firmly believe that it puts the “Homefield” team at a disadvantage more than not because if nothing else, it sets it up for the other team to gain the lead and once it’s an elimination situation then who knows….. I understand travel and everything but if you look at the last 10 years or so, it’s been an even split for whether the team with homefield actually won the series
BTW – for those who haven’t read Brian’s captions to the parade pictures (click on the picture itself it you hadn’t seen captions before) with the Phanatic, they had my wife running down the hall wondering what I was laughing at so loudly

I think that it would be unfair to blame the National League’s All-Star Game loss on Howard. It is true that he was unable to get a hit to tie the game for the NL or get the lead for the NL but the players that batted for 7 innings before Howard came up did not do much to help the cause either. Many of them were impatient and swung at first or second pitches, like Ibanez. Five total game hits is not going to get you many runs and nor in most cases a victory. Pujols did nothing at all at bat, nor Braun, Wright or any of the other NL starters.

Congrats to Phillies on being the first team since the ’72 Pirates to send their outfield to play for the NL team in the All-Star Game.
For all of you fantasy players, we broke down the first half stats and make a case for one of them being the Phillie OF we want on our fantasy squad in the 2nd half.

Maverick ypu put the loss in the All Star game squarely on Howards shoulders? LOL. what did he have 1 out bat, granted a big at bat. Did you not see David Wright throw to first to pull Pujols off the bag? Speaking of Pujols, did you completely miss the “best player in all of baseball” with the error in the first (FYI that also led to a run, just like David Wrights throw) and did you also miss Pujols the “best hitter in all of baseball” come up 0-3? To me if Pujols hadnt gone for that ball and let Utley get it, it would have been tied, had David Wright put on a good throw, the NL would have won. Explain to me how with one at bat, Its on Howard. I blame Pujols first and foremost, and a partial very small part on David Wright fielding.
