According to Comcast Sportsnet’s Daily News Live, the Phillies have agreed to a deal with Pedro Martinez.   A Dominican Republic website posted that the Phillies signed Martinez for $4 million (which would have to be prorated).  The reports are unconfirmed.

Ruben Amaro said that the Phillies have not signed Martinez. Amaro had no comment on whether an agreement has been reached.

Todd Zolecki reports (via Twitter) that Martinez told the Associated Press that his agent is negotiating with the Phillies.

David Murphy reports (via Twitter):  “Pedro Martinez’s agent shoots down report, but says interest is mutual between Pedro and Phils. Calls client “close” to making decision.”

Jon Heyman reports (via Twitter) talked to Martinez’s agent who said Pedro will decide where he would like to play by Sunday.

Jason Stark reported that the Phillies requested Pedro to throw for a second time.  Martinez originally declined, but changed his mind and will throw Friday at 1:00 PM.

You’ve gotta be kidding me…..like seriously gotta be kidding me. Tell me Barkann is playing a cruel joke on me.

  • Not official yet….but if it goes down, the only way I’d be happy with it is if they brought in Hallday or Haren.

you gotta look at it as its either Pedro or Lopez. This dosnt ruin our chances at hallady

The Phils must have a very specific purpose in mind for Pedro if they have in fact penned him to a deal. People have been saying he could help a team in some way but there’s no way he’s being signed to be a 7 strong starter.

Fran is right. This has no effect at all on our efforts to get Halladay, or the probability that we will or won’t get him.

I’ll reserve judgement until I see him pitch.

why are the phils signing pedro?the should be putting a offer to get halladay.

no way if they signed him for $4 million that’s just plain stupid. he was asking for a pro-rated $5 million contract which at this point in the season would be closer to $2.5 – $3 million. why would they give him more money than he asked for (which is more than he deserves) unless that’s the total possible amount with a ton of incentives? nobody else even wanted him

I like this deal. Pedro is great in the clubhouse. He cant be any worse then the guys we are bringing up. He can still be nasty. Trust this team guys.

$4 million??? I heard that it would be more like $2.5 million…

I really think that this might be a springboard to trade Happ… reportedly, the Jays were scouting Happ last week… I hope so because Pedro is NOT Roy Halladay. I like Pedro… he was really good in the WBC… but he’s going to have bad nights.

god i hope this is just an overblown rumor. this just isn’t good news at all. why not invest more time in Halladay who would be a much better fit

This isn’t our money…and I personally would take Pedro Martinez over Rodrigo Lopez or Antonio Bastardo…the Blue Jays want Major League ready talent for Halladay…that means Happ is probably part of any deal.

Maybe it’s prorated $4 million ($2 million, total).

@ToddZolecki: Amaro said Phils have not signed, but had no comment about an agreement or pending physical with Pedro Martinez.

Give me a break. Are people straight stupid?
This isnt your 4 million. So what the hell do you care?
What if he is good? I thnk he sucks too but this cost nothing.
Why bitch about it? Now thats stupid. To me this is a no lose situation. We didnt even have to drop anything in return. Get it?

    look at it this way.

reports are (from buster olney) that the phils need EITHER a package around Drabek (no way) OR a pacakge around Donald to get Roy.

now it is extrememly posible they said, we need a 5th starter, lets get Pedro..because Haap and Donald will be wearing Blue Jay jerseys in order to get Roy

would I miss Haap? yeah, hes much beter than KK..
but if he gets me Roy Halladay, and allows Drabek to stay

    DO IT

dont be surprised if Pedro is the only move

    Chuck P…

where did you see the Jays scouted Haap?

if so,this is all starting to make sense and I think we are gonna get Roy FN Halladay

you mean isnt the only move? the pedro singing with a big trade for a top level starter makes more sense.
If yuo make the trade for a Halladay I then love the pedro signing. It is no pressure on Petey and maybe he will be good.

There is no salary cap in baseball. If the phils signed 100 Pedros at million a pop. And 5 turned out to be great itd be a good move.
There is no pont in saying Pedro is bad. Its for 4 months. If hes good so be it. If not so be it. We lose 0.

yeah i meant isnt the onl move..

Pedro signed to take Haaps spot.

    Cole
    Halladay
    Blanton
    Moyer
    Pedro

yes, all around…except split moyer and pedro.

Andrew – I agree that it’s not our money and usually say, “Why should fans care how much a player costs? I like the fact that we’re being aggressive and want my team to do whatever it takes to make our team better. However, I do think that we should pay attention to how much we are paying for a player’s services because that shows us the competence of our GM.

All said, thumbs up on this signing… arguably one of the top 5 pitchers of this generation.

Furthurmore it wouldnt suprise me at all if after the Halladay trade Pedro ends up starting game 3 of the world series. Just a hunch. I am liking this more as I think about it.

That same Dominican site now claims that the signing is “confirmed” and that Martinez is flying up to Philly tomorrow for his physicals. They fail to cite any sources though…

    Stan, it’s just a blog but it’s there…

then it’s all starting to make sense..

Ruben talked, and a deal around Donald and Haap would get Roy..

scouted Pedro, liked what they saw…

    signed him to replace Haap.

Donald and Haap and probably another guy to Toronto (Drabek staying)

    Halladay a Phil.

Roy pitched today and got the loss vs the Rays. the team has lost his last 4 starts since returnign from his injury. Maybe we can get them to lower thier demands… j/k

If we got Pedro to fill Haap shoes so we can trade him for Doc then it is a legit move by Reub
if we are considering him our big aquisition like Blanton last year then we are done unless we score 10 runs a game so when our back end gets in and throws the ball right down the middle we have a big enough lead to still win.

he has to want out of that shit hole of a team…

come on ruben! pull this off!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

If they did that I could see that Stan, but I dont like it as it stands now, and I doubt Ruben will pull the trigger on that. I would rather see Happ and Halladay on the Phillies than Halladay and Pedro.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

I agree bender. But I think he is supposed to be the big aquisition.

so would I …but you know since the Jays wanted major league ready talent, somebody we like was gonna have to go…

if Pedro is it, and thats the big pitching arm they get…then Rueb should be fired today

pedro’s career era is under 3 and has 214 wins and 99 losses. give him a shot.

Espn says they are in negotiations and he hasn’t signed just yet. And Buster Olney said the Phils will not be out of trying to get Roy! Just on right now

You all act as if a Halladay deal is imminent now….I’m not sure we can assume to be that lucky. Some of you are also saying that this is a no lose scenario, but that doesn’t factor in the possibility that Pedro totally sucks if/when he starts for us. In that case it IS a big time problem because we paid the money and he stinks. Maybe I’m the only one that is sensitive to forking out money, but let’s not forget that in a bad economic time the Phillies have already thrown over 16 million out the window with Eaton and Jenkins.

Wait a second. Pedro can’t be a fifth starter because he cannot pitch into the seventh inning. He and Moyer back to back will burn out the bullpen faster than you can say…well…..whatever… but don’t be surprised when Pedro ends up in the back end of the pen. And he’ll be great there.

Andrew, from MLB.com “Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay, despite being at the center of numerous trade rumors all week, had another quality outing. However, with the offense unable to come through in the clutch, Toronto dropped its third consecutive game to the Rays.” This is part of the reason why they NEED a SS and other positional players besides just a pitcher because of things like this, but this is also the same reason as Stan says “he has to want out of that shit hole of a team…”

Sam Donnellon made an interesting point on Daily News Live: it’s only money.

Here’s the real bind that Rube and the Phils face in defending their title: go the Yankees route, and trade the farm and sign and trade for superstars, have a dynasty and then just come up short, or go the Red Sox route, sign bargain-basement and coming-off-injury pitchers, and be in it every year?

Don’t you mean, “faster than you can say Adam Eaton,” Dipsy?

Paul Domowitch made an interesting point as well: the Phils made it with a lot of farm guys last year – Cole, Chase, Jimmy, the Ryans. Perhaps they think they can do it again.

Alex career stats do nothing for us. Glavine is a 300 game winner yet he sits unsigned and not even the franchise where he won the vast majority of those games at wants him. Pedro won all of those games with an electric fastball and probably the most dominant collection of pitches that anyone has seen in this generation. He no longer possesses those things. That’s why it’s freaking July and no major league team thought up the great idea to go pick him up.

if pedro doesnt work out…the lopez gets the nod again..
and correct me if im wrong hes had 2 solid outings in his two starts.

Haap, Donald, and probably Mayberry, Taylor or Brown for Roy….

Pedro wont bein the pen, he’ll be a starter

$4 mil seems like a heckuva lot for less than half a season. Unless Pedro turns back the clock, I hope he doesn’t mind pitching out of the BP in the playoffs. Hamels, Blanton, Moyer and Pedro would frighten me. I also hope the $4 mil doesn’t create budget issues for dealing for Roy.

I don’t want to jinx it, but I agree that this makes it more likely we get Halladay, and that Happ is headed to the Jays. Reuben has been targeting a front-end starter and reportedly was in contact with Ricciardi on Monday (BEFORE Ricciardi made it public that he’d listen on Halladay). At the same time, the Phils were scouting Pedro but denying any real interest.

I don’t want to jump the gun, but the timing looks an awful lot like Rube trying to get a solid #5 guy to make up for the hole that would be there if we traded Happ to get Doc.

Plus, even if we don’t get Halladay, signing Pedro is a good move.
