According to Comcast Sportsnet’s Daily News Live, the Phillies have agreed to a deal with Pedro Martinez.   A Dominican Republic website posted that the Phillies signed Martinez for $4 million (which would have to be prorated).  The reports are unconfirmed.

Ruben Amaro said that the Phillies have not signed Martinez. Amaro had no comment on whether an agreement has been reached.

Todd Zolecki reports (via Twitter) that Martinez told the Associated Press that his agent is negotiating with the Phillies.

David Murphy reports (via Twitter):  “Pedro Martinez’s agent shoots down report, but says interest is mutual between Pedro and Phils. Calls client “close” to making decision.”

Jon Heyman reports (via Twitter) talked to Martinez’s agent who said Pedro will decide where he would like to play by Sunday.

Jason Stark reported that the Phillies requested Pedro to throw for a second time.  Martinez originally declined, but changed his mind and will throw Friday at 1:00 PM.

Its official the Phillies have a fetish for older AAA catchers and vintage arms. Hopefully, Pedro’s hiatus has been long enough that batters will take sometime to readjust to him. Its gonna be weird seeing him in red pinstripes…man I wonder if he will draw evenmore people to CBP … Then not only will have to give up my spleen but also a kidney to get tickets. Well, its definitely an interesting move good or bad. I thought Carpenter should have been given another chance esp. as he’s more than earned it. Oh well we will see…

    thats what i said Petey…

makes sense..and the Jays scouted Haap his last start..

    makes sense…
sign a CY Young winner to be your 5th starter..and have another CY Young winner as your stud…and a potential CY Young winner as your other stud…

if pedro is it though…I will lose my mind

First, Roy Halladay should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence with A*am E$ton (I won’t say his name). Second, if you’re asking me whether I would rather have the dynasty at the risk of not being “in the mix” every year, I’m going for the dynasty. Third, our farm is deep enough that we can afford to deal a couple of prospects… Marson and Donald won’t play here as long as Ruiz and Utlley/Rollins are around so those two are expendable (not in our plans). We have great pitching prospects… giving away two for a Roy Halladay is worth it. Maybe one of those pitchers turns out to be decent… what are the chances that either is going to give us Roy Halladay production? Fourth, I’ve said this before… if Halladay walks in 2010 we get 4 draft picks. If we decide to trade him in 2010, we’ll surely fetch a decent ransom of prospects.

    Roy Halladay… do it… do it…

Are we positive that Pedro is going to start? another reliever may not be so bad, especially and experienced one

Stan – you’re right and I agree with you 100%…I posted before reading the thread because I was pumped out about Doc.

    Do it Ruben!!

But, Chuck, you saw what the Yankees did to their farm system in all their trades, their signings? They basically had no bench after that. When they need an outfielder, they brought up….Brett Gardiner. While Boston just keeps bringing up good player after good player (see Ellsbury, Perdroia, Youkilis, Masterson). I see what you’re saying about the 4 draft picks though.

And never would I ever compare Halladay and Eaton. I was saying that Pedro and Moyer combined would kill the pen in an Eaton-esque fashion. Sooo relax.

Pedro won’t be in the pen…

this makes sense because Haap is going to be traded.

and if they keep Drabek too..then even better because Drabek will be a Roy Halladay type when hes ready to go…which could be 2010..

Pedro is 37… Maddux is 43. Maddux won 74 games after the age of 37. Pedro was really good in the WBC. If he can stay healthy, he might be able to help us… he’s a 3 time CY winner. I’m 26 years old… besides Roger Clemens, he is the most dominant pitcher that I’ve ever seen. It didn’t get any better than Clemens/Martinez. I’m excited…

According to Heyman, no deal yet and Pedro will make a final decision on Sunday

Got it Mike… I was joking.

We’re far from dismantling the farm the way that the Yankees did… the Red Sox have made their fair share of trades… Beckett, Lowell, Bay…

The 4 million dollar contract would be pro-rated for the remainder of the season, so he’s not going to get 4 million dollars.

    Halladay, dooooooooit.

I would just like to say that when a pitcher like Halladay becomes available when the Phillies actually have a chance to to trade for him, you have to go all out to make the deal happen. I have been a Phillies fan since 1963 and I can see this being on the same level as acquiring Steve Carlton in the 1970′s. He will make us the favorites in the National League. In a playoff series having two stud starters would be a huge advantage.
The Phils have the money to do it, now we will see if Amaro can pull it off.

Good point about Beckett, Chuck. Sorry for the misunderstanding. And not having Steinbrenner also helps us.

I’m leaning towards Halladay. But I’m just praying Ruben won’t give up the pharm Eddie Wade style. Something – an instinct, nothing else – is telling me either Draybek or Taylor have to stay. Imagine, two, three years from now, a lineup of Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Taylor, Ibanez, with maybe Dominic Brown close to ready. We know more about Taylor than Brown.

Worst case with Pedro, he costs us a few games and Lopez steps back in. Best case, he’s a Joe Blanton.

And let’s not forget what one of the Daily News Live guys said: Pedro’s a pitcher. His fastball’s been gone since his last year in Boston, but he can locate, and he has guile. And he’s a competitor: he won’t mail it in like Bedard would.

I will lose my mind if Rube trades for Bedard.

Thats what I have been arguing Miles. Not to mention someone else said something to the tune of if he hadnt screwed over the Mets countless times, the Mets would have re-signed him. Uh, that is the biggest problem I have with this, the Mets dont want him because he screwed them over and choked for them why would it be different for us?

I don’t know… The phils have a bad history of taking the cheap way out. If this move was made in order to get Halladay by trading Happ i’m… still unsure I really wanted to have Triple H’s… If it lets us keep Drabek, Carrassco, & Savery I guess it makes some sense.

What I really hope is that this is just a bargaining ploy to get Toronto to the table. The Phils are the only team that really has the pieces that Toronto wants.

pedro hit 93 the other day..
Maddux won all those games barely in the 90′s because he could locate.
    pedro locates..

Hamels Halladay Haap would have been cool..

but if we have to wave good bye to Haap to get roy…the so be it.

    DO IT RUBEN

I agree with Havoc. the Phillies often take the cheap way out, but I for one was surprised when they paid up for Madson, Hamels and Howard this year. Problem is Hamels and Madson havent been as consistent this year thus far after getting their pay days. Still FAR better then Eaton, but still not like they were last year.

Hehe I know i’m dreaming, but I’d love if we could sub Pedro in and trade him to Toronto instead of Happ. But they’d have to be braindead to go for that…

If they sign Pedro to replace Happ in the rotation, and then use Happ in a package to get Roy Halladay, Ruben Amaro is instantly the GM of the Year.

Combine this with the Ibanez signing and it’s a no-brainer.

No doubt that if Pedro is on he has the goods and experience but such a cancer in the locker room

Even if they dont trade for another guy this is a good signing. It is probably 4 million for the year (ie 2 million for the half year he will play). 2 Million is a lot of money, but not all that much and most importantly this gives up 0 prospects. If he pitches 10 decent games, and can pitch 5 average games, it will probably be worth it. If he cant get 10 games he survives in, it may be a waste of money, but that is replaceable. You cant get your prospects back. Also, for a guy his age, probably what will happen is he will have a good month or two and then fall apart. For 2 million, that is not all that bad.

I’m giving Ruben the benefit if the doubt…this is the same GM that signed Ibanez (All-Star) & Park (who, judging by tonight, has become a stud in the bullpen like he was in LA last year). Give Pedro a chance! Thanks to us fans filling up The Bank we actually have some loose change lying around to make this offer.

Let us also not forget that the Phillies can, and most likely will, win this division with the roster they have currently. Is it a WS winning team, maybe, its very close. The Phillies are not making this signing out of desperation they are doing it as a LUXURY! Last year the Mets NEEDED Pedro and when he failed they had no other options. That is the difference here. We can afford to take a risk and hope we catch some lightning in a bottle. Same with Halladay. We would love to have him but in no way is it a MUST. This gives the Phillies leverage in all situations and that is a nice place to be!

I really like this. Pedro is fresh, he was really good as recently as 2005. Lopez was an O.K. pitcher at the same time. He won 15 games in 2005, but his overall record was only 15-12, with a 4.90 era. Pedro, same year, 15 -8, 2.82 era. Admittedly, they are both old, but Pedro’s ceiling is way, way higher. Plus, I think the Jays want either Happ or Drabek in the Halladay deal, and the Phillies are rumored to have made Drabek untouchable. Means even if we trade for Halladay we need another starter.

Oh, and ESPN is reporting the Jays are trying to package vernon wells in with Halladay. How ridiculous, Steinbrenner on Crack wouldn’t pick up that contract, even for 1.5 years of halladay.

That wont happen. Nobody is letting them off of the hook for that contract. Sorta like the Flyers with Briere (I wish they could move him), nobodys touching that contract.

Pedro has agreed to throw for the Phillies’ scouts again on Friday as per their request. If it goes well he’ll be in Philly on Monday (as per Jason Stark via Buster Only on Baseball Tonight)

    Buster Olney…not Only…oh well

I still don’t know what possessed them to make that deal. I mean, he had just had a terrible season, has a full no trade clause, and it’s basically going to kill them from 2010-2014. I mean, wow, Coco Crisp had a better OPS that contract year. So Freakin Taguchi had a hire OPS that year. So Taguchi. Yea Wells had been a stud in previous years, but generally when a players sucks in a contract year, he takes a pay cut. It’s hard to imagine anyone would have been close to offering $18 mil a year average for Vernon freaking Wells, and he had a year of arbitration left where he would have gotten like 6 million.

I have to admit, it does seem pretty obvious that Amaro wants to replace somebody in the rotation (most likely Happ), and ship a pitcher (Most likely Happ) and probably a position player like Donald, and another prospect pitcher to Toronto for Halladay…But to be honest I think Happ has high potential, and we might regret this trade next year if Halladay doesn’t get us back to the W.S, and Happ becomes a 20 game winner next season while Halladay gets injured and out the entire 2010 season….It’s just our luck, and what we would get for being too greedy. Why not just stick to last years plan, and stick to what we have? It worked last season (plus we would stock up on our farm and even more money)…Were in 1st place in our divison why? because were just that good! No reason to fix something that isn’t broken

I know now one on the phillies listens to this site, but I said it 100 times if the Jays want a package that has Happ or Drabek, it has to be Drabek that goes, for the simple reason Happ has proven to be good, Drabek is still one or two years away, so even if he becomes Halladay type pitcher, oh well, we have Halladay, Happ is too mentally tough and proven it to trade at this point

I love Happ, I really do. He is a solid major league middle of the rotation guy. He doesn’t have electric stuff but yet he gets guys out. However, he will never win 20 games…not for a great team like the Phillies so certainly not for an average team like the Jays. Lets be realistic. He’s 26 or so and his ceiling is about what he has done now. If a team likes him enough to give us Halladay with him as a major piece in the deal you just have to do it.

does anyone not remember that the red sox had hanley ramierez (spelling) in their farm sysyem, and traded him for beckett? i think that worked out for both sides as in the marlins have a stud and the red sox have a few rings. trading Happ and donald for holladay (who will be signed until 2010) will be a good move. Lets just pray that Pedro can at least clock high 80′s.
