It’s pretty absurd to be honest. I enjoy a good back and forth. But in my many trips to Citi Field this season I have never once been even close to blows with any of the Mets fans.

I went to the game on Friday. The only game we lost of the series and at the end of the game Myself, my wife, and two friends were the ONLY Phillies fans left in our section as the rest had been thrown out. One group was pretty obnoxious from the start and I knew they weren’t gonna last. A group behind me was being loud, but not out of control. They were however being incited by Mets fans and because they were drunk things happened. The Mets fan instigators however was not ejected, just the Phillies fans.

So the last two innings of the game were a little lonely for me and my fellows and the crowd decided to turn on us. We had several very drunk Mets fans try to incite us. We however were not drunk, nor had any interest to banter with drunks. We continued to shout and cheer for our team, even though we were being drowned out by several Mets fans trying to point us out to security as a problem which couldn’t be further from the truth.

This is just stupid. On both sides. I can go to a game have a few beers and still be respectful to others around me. And I ALWAYS make sure I shake someones hand at the end of the game. Win or lose.

I agree Vic….alcohol is the problem. Case in point…many people are nice, decent folks until they drink alcohol. Then they become idiots. Have you ever met someone and said, “Ya know, he’s a complete jerk, but when he drinks alcohol he becomes such a nice guy.”

i dunno … i was lookin at the fight on utube … kinda looked boring. I’d rather watch the game tho.

I like to drink and when someone gets in my face, I get right back in theirs … same time, fights are effing boring. baseball is not a gentlemans game tho i mean what like golf? come on.

baseball is exciting and fun … a lot more so that stupid fights.

lastly, i havent been to citi, but I went to shea a bunch on times and always did my thing, spoke my mind, but also remembered I was in someone elses house. I always hated mets fans comin down o the vet or cbp and makin like they own the place.

and really … its never the beers fault. its the idiots drinking them.

Mets Fan, let me get this straight…”So if that is the representation of your city so be it” and “Phillies fans are the worst fans ever.” LOL. You are acting like the Mets dont have bad fans and only Phillies fans fight over spilled beer. If you think that the Mets dont have bad fans, you are beyond a complete idiot. You would be the dumbest person on earth. ALL teams have them. Take your Phillies hatred to the the 16.5 games back Mets blog. Also might want to check that video again of the fight at Citi Field. The Phillies fans poured beer on the Mets fan. Do I condone of that type of thing or would I do it? No. But is pouring beer on someone a reason to throw punches? HELL NO. The Mets fan turned around and tried to punch Phillies fan. So really if the Mets had such GREAT fans you are trying to lecture us on, why did he turn around and start a fight (which resulted in a supreme butt whoopin) after having a beer poured on him instead of being “the bigger person” and walking away? Dont have an answer huh? strange how that happens.

Val Veeta, you “had never heard of a player at the professional level diss another team’s players before.” Really? You havent been watching professional sports very often obviously. Cubs/Cards, Yanks/Red Sox. List goes on. If you have never seen that, you really havent seen very many sports game, including football as well. I dont think what Rollins said was necessarily appropriate for that time, but really, in 07 the Mets saying that the Mets are the team to beat forget the Phillies was ok, but Rollins saying the same thing in 08 was wrong? Thats a seperate incident from this but really. Not to mention “I will not point fingers at anyone,” What do you think pointing out Rollins is without ever mentioning any of the Mets comments is? YOU are pointing your finger directly at the Phillies and the Phans. My guess is that you are a Mets fans honestly. FYI for everyone but Val Veeta and Mets Fan in particular. Their are IDIOT fans EVERYWHERE. Not just Philly, not just NY EVERYWHERE. Get off your high horse and soapbox thinking and preaching to Phillies Nation about J-Roll and the Phillies and Phans that we are horrible and Mets fans are not. There are just as many idiot fans in NY as in Philly. Thanks for the lecture though. Can we get credit hours for having to read the lecture? LOL.

The only games at CBP that I cannot take my stepdaughter to without undue fear that something will happen to her are the Mets games. Mets fans end up getting our tickets by making the environment miserable enough not to go.

Living in Central NJ, I belong to a “mixed” family of both Phillies and Mets fans. We used to love to go to the Phillies-Mets games, and root for our respective teams sitting side by side as friendly rivals. My in-laws and I would battle for the baseball soul of the kids, getting them both Phanatic and Mr. Met shirts, and we all had a great time.

Sadly, my husband and I feel we can no longer attend these games, either in Philly or NY, because the family-friendly atmosphere is long gone, and we are afraid of what the little ones might witness.

I will not point fingers at anyone, because there are classless boors among both sets of fans. However, I must agree with Chuck P above, that the behavior of the Phillies fans at this time is like “kicking them when they’re down.” The Phillies and the Mets are going in completely different directions, the Phillies to the playoffs and the Mets down the toilet. Why this rivalry remains so heated, I have no idea. The Mets are no longer threats to the Phillies’ division title, and since they plan to keep their wonderful management team in place, will probably not be for years to come.

I also feel that Mr. Rollins has taken this rivalry up a notch with his disgraceful comments about the Mets players at what should have been the high point of his career (WS parade). The crowd ate it up, but I felt it was like pouring gasoline on an already volitile situation. I had never heard of a player at the professional level diss another team’s players before. IMO this ratcheted up the emotions of both sides.

Unles they were born and raised there you won’t see them. They have no allegence to you it’s about the money! First of all, Pat, great post.
Second, I can’t believe some of these comments, hopefully some of you are joking (Maverick) and the guy who said he’d DIE for the team. Are you SERIOUS? Do you think any of these players would EVER fight in your behalf, let alone put their life on the line? That has to be the most idiotic thing I have read on here to date. How can you say it’s ok because it happens everywhere? My God, a month ago a young man lost his life at CBP due to this very same mentality, and still some of you can’t get it through your thick heads, it just blows me away.

I will never understand or condone violence, it doesn’t make you a BIG man, it shows what a LITTLE man you really are.

I was at the sat night game and sat in section 139 second row behind us were at least 200 phillies fans who for the most part were good (except for the F the Mets when Tom Seaver was introduced) I did witness 2 arrests of phillies fans and 1 being escoreted out of the stadium all in the same section 134-137. There were all drunk I have been to many games at shea and I have never witnessed so much fighting as when the Mets and Phillies play. I was there with my wife and kids and actually after watching it my kids were laughing at the guys arrested because they could barely walk. So if that is the representation of your city so be it but I would think they are the minority.
