Atlanta Braves (68-61) at Philadelphia Phillies (74-53)

Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88 ERA)

Time: 8:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 76
TV: ESPN
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Last night, the Braves slugged their way to a victory against Cliff Lee and the Phillies.  The Phillies offense  needs to step it up in the rubber match game of the series.

The Curacao native has had himself a fine year with a 2.91 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.  Against the Phillies this season, Jurrjens allowed only two earned runs in 19.2 innings.  In his career against Philly, he is 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA.  The Phillies cumulative lineup is batting .188 against him.  It will not be easy for the offense to get back on track with Jurrjens on the mound.

Joe Blanton will get the start for the Phillies tonight.  After a slow start, Blanton has been dominant since mid-May.  Blanton was hurt by the long ball in his last start. He has given up 24 home runs this season.  Blanton has struggled against the Braves.  In 26 innings, he is 0-1 with a 6.58 ERA.  The Braves lineup is collectively batting .313 against him.

If Blanton pitches the way he has of late and the offense can get back on track, manufacturing runs via small ball with runners in scoring position, the Phillies should be in good shape under the national spotlight.

GO PHILLIES!

Wow… these ESPN announcers are actually talking about the game in front of them and the players. They’re not talking about their kids, or other games, or what they had for dinner, or whose birthday it is… I don’t think I can take the shock.

Oh, nice play by JROLL!!! I think he’s already making himself an Ashburn contender. :)

These announces are great, I love when the Phillies are on national tv just for them. Can’t go wrong with these guys.

    Blanton looking very shakey.

Not a good sign as the (vastly overrated )offense never TOUCHES this guy.

The offense curls into a little ball as soon as throws his glove out on the mound
as evidenced by that first inning.

Phils lead the NL in runs. How can the be overrated?

Have you watched a game in the past week?

You wouldn’t be asking that question.

That is because they will score 10 runs in one game and turn around and score 2 in the next 5 games. And this past week is a perfect example. We hit the Mets but can’t hit the Pirates or Braves.

Luckily a season isn’t only from August 23 to August 30.

Amazing how far that ball went, if it’s as bad a swing as they’re saying.

Boo freaking hoo. The Phils are ONLY 7 GAMES UP in the division and close to having the best overall NL record. Get a grip, quit yer bitchin and enjoy the ride.

    exactly Terri. Far too inconsistent.
Far too many slumps throughtout the lineup.
Rollins still has too many oh fers.
Currently there are 4 pitchers in the lineup-Ibanez,Feliz,catcher,pitcher.Automatic outs.

No Joedad, the season isn’t only from August 23 to August 30 but the post season is only good pitchers and recently the Phillies can’t even hit the bad ones.

This offense have been pretty bad for the past month. Ryan Howard is they only person who is hitting. They just showed that Raul has only 6 hits in his last 44 at bats.

    Chipper = automatic out

Seriously, Chipper might be the only guy slumping more than Raul.

Joedad you’re right! There is way too much nitpicking over this team on this site. They’re not perfect, but they’re winning!!!! But Chipper is not an automatic out, ask Durbin.

In your hypothetical and totally inaccurate scenario, the Phils would win the first game when they score 10 runs and lose the next 5 when they score 2. It isn’t reality. This is a good offense that will not be great at all times. Every other NL team wish their offense was as “bad” as the Phils offense.

I don’t think the RISP issue would be such a concern if we had last year’s dependibility from the bull pen.

What does the bullpen have to do with not being able to hit with RISP? The last game Happ lost, he gave up 3 runs and we had a chance to score like 8. The bullpen was not even a factor in that game. That is just an example.

No runners on base, what bum that Utley guy is!

God Bless Chase Utley. The silent leader of the team.

Ed R. – It does when you leave 11 men on base and lose a 2 run game when your bull pen fails to save it. You can’t squander scoring opportunies if you can’t maintain a lead in a low scoring game. More often that starters go 6-7 innings and your Happ example doesn’t take in consideration that Charlie wasn’t going to chance another blown save by madson or lidge (who was unavailable anyway).

Like 10 days ago someone mentioned the phils having 4 players with 30 homers and I mentioned Ibanez not getting there. I was joking but bow it appears to me that no he wont get to 30.

    Hows that great offense doing?

One , count em one ,run.
    WOW!

that’s “More often than not starters….”

How does Jurrjens do it? The opposing teams know he’s going to come out and throw strikes and everyone and his dog knows he doesn’t have over-powering stuff or great out-pitches, yet every outing he seems to get hitters to get themselves out and rarely work the count… It’s remarkable.

If you know he is throwing strikes how can you work the count?
Lets all hope the braves do nto make the playoffs. After the Cardinals they are the last eam Id like to see. Maybe even more than the Cardinals.

I agree that a faulty bullpen only further exemplifies the issues that the teams inability to hit with RISP causes but I do not see them as linked issues.

OK, seriously, we need to make this pay.

oh boy a risp so we know no runs are gonna be scored.

Really Andrew? Because I would much rather face the Braves than the Giants. The Phillies have showed they are great at beating teams into submission but winning close games is not their thing. You can’t win close games if you can’t hit with RISP or have a bullpen that is anything but sure as jreed has mentioned. The Giants do not get beat handily but they do get beat.
