Atlanta Braves (68-61) at Philadelphia Phillies (74-53)
Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88 ERA)
Time: 8:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 76
TV: ESPN

Last night, the Braves slugged their way to a victory against Cliff Lee and the Phillies. The Phillies offense needs to step it up in the rubber match game of the series.
The Curacao native has had himself a fine year with a 2.91 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Against the Phillies this season, Jurrjens allowed only two earned runs in 19.2 innings. In his career against Philly, he is 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA. The Phillies cumulative lineup is batting .188 against him. It will not be easy for the offense to get back on track with Jurrjens on the mound.
Joe Blanton will get the start for the Phillies tonight. After a slow start, Blanton has been dominant since mid-May. Blanton was hurt by the long ball in his last start. He has given up 24 home runs this season. Blanton has struggled against the Braves. In 26 innings, he is 0-1 with a 6.58 ERA. The Braves lineup is collectively batting .313 against him.
If Blanton pitches the way he has of late and the offense can get back on track, manufacturing runs via small ball with runners in scoring position, the Phillies should be in good shape under the national spotlight.
GO PHILLIES!

Being put in the closers role, even for one game is what happened to Madson.
GOD F*CKING DAMN IT!!!
I am so tired of this bullpen. Wouldn’t hurt if we had a first basemen that could play a ball to his left.

Impressive play by Rollins. Really using his head on that one. Great play by Utley. That ball took a bit of an odd jump.

I agree Andrew. I refused to watch an episode of that show because I knew it was going to be very bad for the pen. Maybe I’ll watch it after the season is over depending on how things go.

Is eyre really retring after this year?
And thank you lou pinella for giving up on him last year.
PS also thank you for being the most over rated manager of all time and making the cubs suck again this year.

Amen!!
I hope Ruben spends as much as he has to, to find a quality left hander for the pen. With Eyre retiring after this year, I don’t like their chances with just Romero. I also hope Walker is back next year. Bye bye Durbin. You were solid two years ago.

It was a good show but I was hoping they would have shown more of the pen, meaning shots in game while they were goofing off. I am sure that would have been entertaining.

Wow Scott Eyre really has been the real unsung anchor of this pen this year, shame it’s his last.

I dont think Eyre can retire. Madoff the jackal stole his money.
This game has a playoff feel to it.

The Phils should finally be able to address the bullpen internally from this point on especially from the left side with Escalona primed, or with an arm like Bastardo or Savery.

I don’t think Pinella is overrated. He may be overrated now…the Cubs are 0-6 in the playoffs with him as the manager but I think that is just what the Cubs do. He did manage a World Series winner(Reds) 6 division titles with 3 teams and managed one of the best regular season teams of all time the 95 Mariners. The Mariners have been absolutely terrible since he left.
I think he gets more air time because of his prior blow ups and everyone waiting for him to kick some dirt or throw a hat again.

joedad – i watched a few episodes of the pen and thought the same thing….not enough pen shots…maybe the team was afraid that they say too much about pitching strategies, or it was too hard to edit this stuff out

I really like lou and think hes funny.
If you take away the Tampa years and his reg season winning pct is great. But hes won 1 pennant in 22 years. And thats was 1990.

Is Escalona primed? Did he add a pitch or two? Same thing with Bastardo.
Ewww the Giants…Gotta face Linceccum and Zito who is 4-2 with a 1.92 era since the All Star Break….and Mr.No Hitter, Sanchez…lets hope our bats come back to life by Tuesday.

Ruiz for the Ashburn? He got that 2-run hit that gave the Phils the lead, and he had a good night batting overall.

Ed R. You have to feel good about the depth in pitching the Phils have in the minors and your looking at one or two of these guys to come in and do a job supporting the vetarans, anything more you worry about later. Plenty of guys having success in bullpens around the league have a limited arsenals and sometimes too many pitches in the bag can hurt a reliever.
Well done Brad Lidge!
