Gameday 2009, Posts
UPDATE: John Finger reports (via Twitter) that the game will re-start at 9:00 PM. Jamie Moyer is warming up.
Arizona Diamondbacks (54-65) at Philadelphia Phillies (66-49)
Jon Garland (6-10, 4.28 ERA) vs. Pedro Martinez (1-0, 5.40 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Fair, 87
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
After a six game road trip, the Phillies return home for a quick stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies took two out of three against the D-backs at the end of July. It isn’t as hot as it is Arizona, but with the warm weather, the ball will be flying out of Citizens Bank Park.
Pedro Martinez will make his home debut in his second start of the season. He pitched well against the Cubs, allowing three runs in five innings. Garland was backed by horrible defense when he faced the Phillies earlier this year. He gave up six runs (three earned) in six innings.
As it gets closer to September, Ryan Howard is starting to heat up. He has four home runs in the last four games. He is batting .381 will 11 RBI over the last seven days. Howard has Garland in his book, homering off him in July. The Diamondbacks have a big bopper as well. Mark Reynolds has homered in three straight games. He is batting .285 with 38 homers and a .981 OPS on the season. With the humidity, expect a power (or strike out) display, especially from these two sluggers.
Your Gameday Beer – Mama’s Little Yella Pils
Brewed by the Oskar Blues Brewery out in Colorado, Mama’s Pils was one of the exciting new drinks featured down at DC Beer Week. It is a Czech-style pilsener comes only midly recommended after a summer of trying lots of these kind of beers. This is mostly because it starts off a little too hoppy; however, the taste definitely grows on you finish the glass. I would also try to drink it cold, it is a summer brew after all. This also means it goes well with BBQ anything. – By Brian

It looked like a monster storm because the sky was pitch black and there was lightning, wind, you name it. It was also pouring. But knowing how the weather is this time of year, it could just as easily pass over in 20 minutes.

Oh Jeff, already angry and the man hasn’t thrown a pitch. He only threw 6 scoreless innings against these guys his last time out against them so don’t jump off a bridge yet.

Great rain delay. So i can tune over to NFL network to see thier 25 hour a day coverage of Brent farve. I hope he can lead the league in interceptions again this year.

Here in KoP, we’ve got severe thunderstorm alerts, but I don’t know how long it’s going to last.

Hmn… I’m looking at the radar maps online. There is a big area of rain, but it’s narrow and looks like it’s moving due east. Still, looks like it might take a while.

I just got home and turned on MLB.TV and since it’s in a delay, can anyone give me a quick run down of what has happened? I’m not in Philly so I have to watch online, and during rain delays, they just show a black screen that says the game is in a delay, so I’m not seeing anything right now. Any help? P-p-p-p-please???

@Matt: Dbacks started with a lead-off HR, but that was the only run. JRoll got a hit, then Victorino, then Utley walked, loading the bases for Howard… who struck out. Werth popped out, Ibanez grounded out. Martinez did much quicker work for us in the 2nd and 3rd, but the Phils didn’t score anything in the 2nd and the rain delay started in the middle of the 3rd.

The rain seems to be easing here in KoP, so it may not be much longer.

(looking at radar map) Looks like the worst of it has left the ballpark area. If they don’t start playing now, they’re not going to get the game in tonight.

This rain delay sucks big time… especially since Pedro just had a 6-pitch 2nd inning, and a 10-pitch 3rd inning….

Of course Utley was on first so still no knocks with RISP. Same old Phils, haha.
That left-fielder is an absolute dumba$$ btw.
PETE HAPPY DELIVERS! Someone didn’t give Garland/Hinch the memo that Raul has been struggling…..

Still the right move to send Pete Happy there because The Turd was on deck. Obviously nothing positive was going to happen there.

Good things…..Charlie can’t get too greedy with Jamie, though. If he gets us through another inning I would go right to Chan Ho. Can I get a second on that?

Hey, if he keeps pitching these 6-pitch innings, he can stay in as long as he wants!

And Moyer goes to 3rd! He’s playing like he’s got something to prove. Too bad our big bats couldn’t do anything with it.

Dangit I really wanted to get Jamie in there….that would have been a legendary run right there. Now he’s just tired for no reason…..haha.

garland really has to appreciate defense independent pitching statistics…and he’s a ground ball pitcher. I guess it doesn’t help when the he commits an error on a routine ground ball hit by the opposing pitcher

It was initially ruled an error, but changed to a hit. Meanwhile: Moyer has only 20 pitches.
