Philadelphia Phillies (59-42) at San Francisco Giants (56-47)
Joe Blanton (7-4, 4.11 ERA) vs. Tim Lincecum (11-3, 2.30 ERA)
Time: 9:05 p.m at AT&T Park
Weather: Fair and Windy, 60
TV:Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Last night, the reigning American League Cy Young award winner was on the mound. Tonight, the reigning National League Cy Young winner is on the hill.
Tim Lincecum is making a run for another Cy Young Award. The 25 year old is 11-3 with a 2.30 ERA, 183 strikeouts, 1.05 WHIP and he has limited opponents to a .214 average. Lincecum is 1-0 with a 4.68 career ERA in 25 innings against the Phillies. However, in two starts last season, he was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA against the Phillies.
Joe Blanton may not have a Cy Young trophy sitting on his mantle, but he has been pitching extremely well as of late. He is coming off a spectacular month of July where he gave up only four runs in 29.1 innings. He’ll look to continue his dominance into August. Blanton has struggled in his career against the Giants, though. He is 1-2 with a 5.74 ERA against San Francisco.
The Phillies are having a tough time hitting with runners in scoring position, and it won’t be easy for them to turn around those struggles tonight. With Lincecum and Blanton pitching, the last thing expected is a high scoring game.

Your Gameday Beer- IJ Plzen
Check it, IJ is the name of the brewery Amsterdam and Plzen is the name of their pils variety. It is a top-fermended dry beer brewed in the Belgian ale style. Like most pils, it is heavy on the hops and makes no mistake about it. It has very faint sweet notes at first sip. Crepes, or more traditionally pannenkoeken, would go well with this Dutch beer. – By Brian

Georgie, he should have a man’s haircut, like Johnny Unitas. Now that’s a haircut you can set your watch to.

I know Lincecum is unbelievable, but something needs to be about the lack of plate patience and discipline on this road trip

@Georgie: I think you’re seeing the result of frustrated people watching a really depressing game.

Assuming Lincecum won’t come out of the pen tomorrow, I like our chances.

Just awful. But we’re still, what, 5 games ahead? And the Mets are 10 games out, so we don’t have to deal with their loser fans harassing us.

Well, I think I’m still half buzzed from Gen. Lee’s performance last night, and I never get too upset when they’re facing the likes of Lincecum, nothing like watching a superb pitcher on either side.

ABout a week ago we all talked about the Phillies giving their pitchers great run support! Blanton pitched a great game, nothing to show for except a loss. Need to shake the lineup.
One week later we have 0 run support

Phils will come home with a winning West coast road trip. Nothing wrong with that.

Jeff, this team goes into hitting slumps, they always have, and they always will. And they always come out of it when they have to, I’m not going to freak out yet.

so we miss matt cain, maybe next time…not that i am eager to take on their number two, i just want our boys to get as many looks at their best in case we met up in the post season…That kid is quite the pitcher, picked up that nasty change-up in the off season so I heard. Though the Phillies have problems again in RISP department, its hard to gripe too much about it tonight. Hat’s off to the Giants ace.

Results tonight were pretty much expected with Lincecum pitching but Phils need to get the big hits with runners on base and get them runners home. Might have to face the Giants in the playoffs and their two good pitchers Lincecum and Cain. Barry Zito is not too bad either. Giants with their pitching would be a tough foe in the playoffs. Victorino will proabably be in there next time against Lincecum and I would give Dobbs a shot against Lincecum and let him start at third or sit Howard and let Dobbs start at first. Probably would be looking at a Lee vs. Lincecum in a first game. Who gets the Jeltz Award tonight? Ibanez, Utley or Howard? Impatience at the plate was the Phillies downfall tonight but there is that feeling that they would do better against Lincecum in a game at Philly with Lee or Hamels pitching in a playoff game.

mike B. – howard i think gets the night off he legged out a single against the shift and made a great play at first when blanton fielded a bunt or dribbler and made a hurried throw that howard really strectched out for….I think its Ibanez…pitcher on third, man on first 2 outs and goes downfirst pitch swinging..no way does bako take the heat for an all-star that strands their pitcher on 3rd esp. against the likes Linececum. Wow looks like Bako….too bad esp. since the night before he had to catch someone he had probably less than a day to prepare for…

Tough loss as Phils hitters continue to get themselves out. I could live with the 2-0 loss if Lins was lights out. But he wasn’t. Not even close. Giants had no business winning this game. The Mets look 3-4 from them earlier this season with some backups. I won’t go crazy, but we’d loose that game even w/Doc on the mound. The move for Lee wasn’t just for the post season;it was also made to insure that the Phils made the post season, but the brass will never admitt that. What scares me is that Florida and the Braves contiune to play well against the tougest teams in N.L. The remaining 60 games are mostly against teams with solid to very good starting pitching. Very few W-Myers mixed in. If the Phils don’t start playing better fundamental baseball they’re going to make this NL East race very nerve wrecking down the stretch. Tomm is a must win. I don’t care what anyone says. Can’t loose 3/4 to anyone. Especially a potential NLDS opp.

J reed = I agree with you on Ibanez for the Jeltz Award but Utley comes in a close second; 0 for 4 with a strikeout and 5 runners LOB. Utley also an all-star and many people talk about him as being the current best second baseman in baseball. When you are up there on that high pedestal, you have to do your job. Jeltz was not justified for Bako. Would like to know Amanda’s justification for giving it to Bako.

Mike B.- so would I….earlier their was some banter in regards to him she might have picked up on it and just went ahead without giving it alot of thought …This is a well run site and I imagine alot goes into keeping things together along with the post game synopsis and pre-game write-ups. Writing for sports esp. baseball is a pain in the ass with all the stats which invovles research and also more typing time. So to do this day in and day out has got to be a labor of love and I think that grind would get any back-up catcher more props. Watching baseball every night is actuall pretty time consuming and even more so having to attend to the site’s duties. My guess is she probably saw alot of bad mouthing of bako and perhaps, not seeing the whole game took it out of context….Maybe she just didn’t want to explain things to offended worshippers of the Ibanez, Utley Altar of Baseball all day long. I mean the worst, no glory, low paying, grunt job is back-up catcher…Catchers how underappreciated labor wise, always laugh when I hear how Ut is a such a gamer…yes he is, but any catcher is by default any team’s true gamer..christ you go out in horrid heat dressed like a fricking armadillo only to have a rock hard object thrown at you at 90+mph. All the while squatting…not to mention all your pitcher’s tendencies and signs you have to remember as well as those of the batters that step in next to you with a large piece of lumber in their hands. Oh yeah then there’s blocking the plate (that when the ball is actually thrown there!) when someone is running at you full speed and wants to take you out.

Mike B.- either way, I could understand esp. after suffering a lost and a week of late nights to face the incredulous onslaught of disbelief on the game day post which she also probably has to write. Man, and i don’t think its true, but imagine what it be like if one of the beloved is on the 2003 list…actually any of our boys….its gotta hurt when its one your own…I don’t have alot love for red sox fans now that their arrogance is indistinguishable from the Yankees, but still this has gotta sting. I would want real PEDs clouds over our championship

I don’t mean to sound like I think the sky is falling. The Phils did win 20 games in July for Gods sake. They were kinda due for a skid after being so hot for so long. In games like these a teams lack of fundamentals can be exposed. The Phils can slug, but they can’t manuf. runs consist. Charlie, M. Thompson and the boys need to correct this a.s.a.p. You can’t teach power(Mets backups);but you can teach fundamentals( Tony L.;Cards). Get it together O. Good nite.

Great posts J reed and Repeat!! I agree with both of you. Let us hope that Hamels can help lead the team to a win tomorrow and the offense wakes up so the bitter taste of Saturday night’s loss can be diluted a bit going into the off-day on Monday.
