Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (63-48) at Chicago Cubs (58-54)
Cliff Lee (9-9, 2.95 ERA) vs. Ryan Dempster (6-5, 4.04 ERA)
Time: 2:20 p.m at Wrigley Field
Weather: Sunny, 82
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
After last night’s offensive explosion and a much anticipated start by Pedro, the Phils look to sweep the series with the Cubs in a classic afternoon game at Wrigley.
Cliff Lee will seek to improve to 3-0 with the Phillies since coming over from the Indians. During interleague play this season, he faced the Cubs in Chicago, going seven innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in a no decision (Cubs won in 10). He also gave up two solo shots in that game, one to Derek Lee. This will be just his second career start at Addison and Clark.
Lee will be opposed on the mound by Ryan Dempster who has cooled off this year after a torrid 2008 complete with a 17-6 record and All-Star appearance. It will be his first start against the Phils this season but has seen our boys six times over the past three complete seasons (only once as a starter), posting a 1-0 record and allowing 4 runs over 11 innings. Dempster’s delivery is known for his goofy hand slap the first time through the lineup but usually finishes with a fastball, slider or changeup. Last month the righty spent some time on the DL after fracturing a toe on his right foot when he jumped over the dugout fence to celebrate a win.
At the plate Milton Bradley continues to heat up in the second half and is riding a seven-game hitting streak. He is 3 for 13 against Cliff Lee in his career with a .774 OPS and 4 Ks. Meanwhile Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano are hitless in this series.
The Phillies on the other hand are all hot after last night’s 12 spot in which every position player had a hit. Woohoo!
Could today be the day we see Jamie Moyer pitch in relief? Let’s hope not.
Your Gameday Beer – Goose Island India Pale Ale
I was looking for a good summer beer with some Chicago flair for today’s recommendation and I think I’ve found it. Goose Island is a major player in the Windy City brew scene and its IPA has been referred to as “bottled sunshine.” This no doubt refers to its bright amber color and hoppy, citrus flavors. So this afternoon imagine soaking up the rays in the Wrigley Bleachers, catching Phillies home runs, and not throwing them back. Eat a sausage sandwich with it, just don’t spill any on Shane. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

Seeing as we’re all caught up in Pedro/Jamie hysteria, I’d like to provide a little comedy to the afternoon.

According to this predication the Mets would win 98 games and finish 9 games better than the Phillies. LOL. To be fair we did get the wildcard in this predication.
GO PHILS, GO CLIFF LEE today!

OK, what is a goofy hand slap?
Ramirez hasn’t played yet hence no ability to get a hit.

it’s pretty hard to get a hit when you don’t play the entire series

Bob, the Mets will probably be picked to win again next year when their team gets healthy again. It’s just the way it works. I prefer it that way. Sports Illustrated picked the Mets to win the series this year….hehehe.

I know JRoll is hitting well the last month or so but this is two game in a row he swung at the first pitch. There is no way he doesn’t benefit from taking a few pitches. He is the lead off hitter after all.

Apparently Theriot graduated from the Jimmy Rollins school of leadoff hitting after swinging at the first 4 pitches. Schweeet.

DJ: I don’t think he pressed charges… last thing I read was that he filed a complaint.
“Victorino said he does not want to press charges, but he said would file a complaint with Chicago police. He has since filed that complaint. The Cubs also filed a complaint with the fan.”

Shane in conjunction with the Cubs filed complains with the Chicago PD regarding the incident. They can’t press charges until they identify and arrest the fan who threw the beer which at this point they have not done.

I’m gonna file a complaint against our offense if they return to their woeful ways today. Not a good start.

i have no idea j reed, but as someone mentioned above I would imagine that filing a complaint just comes before pressing charges because the person isn’t in custody yet

Never have I laughed harder at a Chris Wheeler comment.

Lee is doing his best Hamels impression during this Baker at bat….I hate when people foul off a bunch of pitches.

I don’t think that you can get arrested with just a complaint…
Now, pressing charges against this guy would be a little over the top. I mean, send someone to PRISON because they threw a beer? Eeeeeh… Good call on Shane NOT to press charges… even though the guy that threw the beer is a douche who should not be allowed to go to Wrigley for the rest of the season.

Manny – i agree, but you’d probably get fined, with restitution…. if you were gonna be incarcerated it’d be jail and not prison unless your in Texas.

Doug Glanville is in the booth with TMac and Wheels. I have fond memories of Doug, although me and my buddy are also reminiscing on how he blew it during Milton’s no hit bid when he misjudged that ball in the 9th. Anyone else remember that? I was furious.

According to Gameday, this umpire has the tighest strike zone ever.

Correct: this umpire does indeed have little sympathy for Lee, it would appear. That makes the strikeout of Bradley even more impressive.
