Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (70-50) at New York Mets (57-66)
Pedro Martinez (1-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. Oliver Perez (3-3, 6.06 ERA)
Time:1:10 p.m at Citi Field
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 78
TV: MY PHL17
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Pedro Martinez will be making his first start against his former team. Martinez spent four season in New York, winning 32 games and posting a 3.88 ERA. Pedro’s last outing was cut short due to a rain delay.
Pedro will be opposed by Oliver Perez. Perez is 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 13 starts against the Phillies. Sometimes Oliver Perez will dominate. Other times he will get lit up. Perez faced the Phillies earlier this year and lasted 1/3 of an inning. He gave up four runs on five hits and six walks.
Chase Utley will not be in today’s lineup, recieving a day off against the left-hander. Lefties are hitting .205 against Perez this season. Eric Bruntlett will start at second base.
Your Gameday Beer – Philadelphia Original Lager
Brewed by Red Bell Brewery out of the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, this beer is a classic microbrew lager. It’s a bit heavier than Yuengling, with more of a roasted malt flavor and some sweet coffee and caramel hints. Its supreme drinkability coupled with a pour that looks like iced tea means you can sneakily house several of these bad boys. Sundays are pasta days so have your favorite strand with some marinara sauce and a few Philly Lagers. – By Brian

Greg Dobbs is on the 15 Day, Miguel Cairo has been called up to replace him. He should be starting at 2nd! Sorry, I am part of ABB (Anybody But Bruntlett).

Speaking of bad liars….remeber this on for Cole Hamels
In August 2006, Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels tried using a pair of pliers to open a plastic bag filled with new kitchen utensils. When that tactic failed, Hamels opted for a Swiss Army knife, and his ham-handedness resulted in an inch-long gash on his left index finger.
Hamels tried to seal the wound with super glue, but lost the feel for his changeup and was shelled for nine runs in an 11-2 loss to the Cubs. Several days later, Hamels shared his story with the team’s beat reporters.
“That’s the lesson my parents have been teaching me: Don’t ever cut with a knife up,” Hamels said. “Everybody knows that. You learn that in Boy Scouts.” ….so how bad can it be for Meyers…he changed his poor story only 3 times….should have crazy glue his mouth shut….Philly players “crazy glue” don’t leave home with out it!

Nick, MLB.com would be the only place. Not sure if they have blackouts however.

Is something wrong with Utley? Why in God’s name would you sit him when he is in the middle of an 8-17 hot streak? You can say its because Perez is a Lefty but his home run last night was vs a lefty. Especially when you are playing E.B. Fun fact, you add E.B and Ruiz averages together and its 260…AWESOME!!

I lied…it’s 360, not 260…

@Joedad: yes, MLB.com’s feed of the game is blacked out in the Philly and NYC areas. You can see it out of town, though.

This guy has 25 pitches already, without a single out! He’ll be finished in 1 inning at this rate!

I love how they keep talking about Perez and his bad contract and pretend like we didn’t sign Adam Eaton to a disgusting contract not long ago and released him after 2 years.

Wow… is that some kind of record, a starting pitcher gets pulled after .2 innings without being injured?

Being taken out in the first inning after giving up 6 ER and going 3-0 to the pitcher…absolutely priceless.
For everything else, there’s kicking the Mets’ A$$

Unbelievable Perez gone after 2/3 of an inning! This is fantastic! I love that the mets are stuck with his contract. Oh yeah Paul he’s not hurt he just sucks! lol

Tracey, the 22-1 Reds game, Cueto was taken out after a third of an inning, he gave up 6 too i think, or maybe more…10? But i’m not sure if it turned out he was injured…

Explain to me why that play wasn’t dead the second Victorino put his arms in the air to signify that the ball was stuck under the wall? Ibanez was right to pick it up after the umpires decided to pretend like nothing even happened. F*cking idiots.

This has to be pretty emotional for Pedro. The Mets announcers are saying the first time he went back to Boston as a Met he gave up 8 runs…

I’m gonna save my judgement on Pedro until his entire outing is finished but what he is doing right now is rule number 1 on the list of things not to do after getting a big lead. He let them right back in this game. First pitch fastball to Franceour? I guess he and Chooch decided to ignore the scouting report there.

I remain on the fence with Pedro. We’ll see how he does, Moyer should be ready today if we need him.

Pedro’s last start (with the rain) was rough in the 1st, but solid for the next 2 innings (until the rain delay). Looks like the same today.

I think if pedro can go 6 with only giving up 2 runs then thats a great outing. His Era is deceptive because he gave up that 1 run last outing but only pitched 3 innings because of the rain.
