Philadelphia Phillies (72-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (52-71)

Cole Hamels (7-8, 4.78 ERA) vs. Paul Maholm (7-7, 4.74 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at PNC Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 76
TV:Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Losing a heart-breaker last night, the Phillies learned that they can not take the Pirates lightly.  The Pirates may be in last place, but the Phillies continued their struggles at PNC Park.

Cole Hamels has found himself slumping against many teams this season, including the Pirates.  In six innings, he gave up five earned runs against them.  The biggest problem for Hamels is his location.  If he has command of his pitches, he will be in complete control.

Hamels will be opposed by Paul Maholm who is 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA in his career against the Phillies.  Maholm, a sinkerballer, is able to get many hitters to ground out.

Golden CapYour Gameday Beer – Golden Cap Saison Ale
Tonight’s beer is from the New Holland Brewing Company out of Michigan. You can’t miss this one in the beer aisle, it has a huge flying monkey on the label. It’s a farmhouse ale with faint lemon and yeast flavors which go down smooth – a definite summer ale. I’m drinking one right now and recommend a savory crepe with it. – By Brian

mlb gamecast on espn just had a ball right in the center of the strike zone listed as a “ball”. either crazy umping, or gamecast doesn’t know where the pitches actually are.

Yet another pitcher that DOMINATES the Phillies vastly overrated offense.
    Like last night.

Happens far too often to consider this a great offense.

I have comcast and hate direct tv. no contracts to sign. i get phillies, flyers on comcast sportsnetwork. never any problems with weather. i pay 125 a month and have phone, hd, internet. also get hbo and showtime. direct is way more then that. i have had for years.

Don’t know what it is with the phils and bad pitchers like petit redding and now another garbage pitcher shuting them down buy we hit guys like haren and beckett.

numbers don’t always tell the story. They tend to pad stats in bunches .

And I repeat. They are getting thoroughly DOMINATED right now by a pitcher with an ERA of 4.68.

Where’s Cole finding some of this velocity at?

    teejvee –
if numbers don’t always tell the story they why did you use them to make your argument:
” They are getting thoroughly DOMINATED right now by a pitcher with an ERA of 4.68″
    You refuted your own argument

I am encouraged by the way Cole is pitching. We need some more runs though. Let’s go Phils!

Cole is still throwing a lot of pitches

Yeah Cole is certainly doing better tonight – but tonight would be the night to go deep into the game. While he hasn’t given up any runs tonight they are still running high counts on him and fouling a lot of pitches off him. 80 or so pitches through 5 innings is not encouraging coming from Hamels.

But did anyone see him get the 96 MPH fastabll?

The phils need to be more patient with this guy and make him throw pitches.

The Nation is quiet tonight. Let’s hear some chatter.

Never count your chickens, but with Norm Johnson on the DL the Marlins are pretty much done.

great job Cole, let’s get some friggin run support!

Well it won’t be Lidge. Even if he didn’t blow it last night, tonight would be 5 days in a row. Charlie can’t be that stupid.

I hope it is Chan Ho too. Or maybe Madson. See how he does in another save opp. Or Walker?

    walker ?

i am thnking its chan ho or madson. Knowing the old man and how he is I am betting Madson.

this pitcher does very well against lefties. well when you look at our lineup our big boppers are lefty. utley with the first homer this year for a lefty. not easy.

No patience against sinker ball pitchers. Hard to believe only one run against this lowly Pirates ball club.

Yes Andrew I am serious. Walker has closed before, with decent success. Better success than Madson and Park as Park has no experience.

Walker has an ERA of 2.18. Clearly he can get people out.

I think you mean Norm Peterson

Well done Cole. Way to not crap your pants when two guys got on with 1 out.

The Pirates aren’t lowly against the Phils at PNC. It’s as if they save their best pitching for this annual occasion. I wonder if the hitters even watched video of Maholm before the game.
Hamels has stranded runners and run up his strikeout total. That’s very encouraging.

San Diego just put up a 6 spot on the ATL and have a 6-3 lead. Top 6.

So… you think Cole is still in there because he’s afraid to let Lidge in? “No, Charlie, please! It looks like I might actually win this one!!”
