Philadelphia Phillies (73-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (52-72)

J.A Happ (10-2, 2.59ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (3-6, 5.21 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at PNC Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 80
TV: MY PHL 17

The Phillies and Pirates will play the rubber-match game of the series tonight.  Even though the Pirates are a last place team, they’ve kept pace with the Phillies during this series. The games have been close and down to the wire.

The Phillies will hand the ball to J.A Happ, who has the lowest ERA of any rookie since Hideo Nomo in 1995.  He has been one of the most consistent starters, and isn’t phased when runners reach base.  Happ allowed one run in seven innings when he faced the Buccos in July.  He limited them to four hits, and walked two.

Charlie Morton gave up two runs in 6.1 innings in his last outing, rebounding from a game in which he allowed ten runs in one inning.  Morton faced the Phillies last season and gave up five runs in two innings.  Shane Victorino homered off him.  Victorino, the team’s leading hitter, is batting just .222 in the last seven days.

The offense needs to provide Happ with run support, something they’ve lacked in the past two games.  With the ninth inning troubles, it would be nice for the Phillies to get a comfortable lead, big enough so that it is a non-save situation.

Tonight’s lineup: Rollins (SS)/ Victorino (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Werth (RF)/ Ibanez (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Bako (C) Happ (P).

When in Pittsburgh, drink the beer I suppose. This staple of Western PA carries little sophistication other than the many different tailgate games that it’s good for. The macrobrew is about on par with Miller, Bud and Coors (only around 4% ABV) except maybe with a little more soul. Eat it with some classic ‘burgh food like brats or any sandwich topped with french fries. – By Brian

I think I would rather drink my own urine than IC. That stuff is disgusting.

    Who’s the other contender?

I would have preferred Pedro’s start to be tonight rather than tomorrow night against the Braves. Happ should definitely have a good enough night pitching tonight for the Phils to take the series. Tomorrow night’s pitching matchup makes me nervous and unfortunately this weekend’s series against the Braves can help determine if we will have to do more or less scoreboard watching in September. I hope the Padres beat the Braves again tonight and we win, which would lessen the blow of losing the first game of the series tomorrow. (And yes, I am looking past tonight’s game with the lowly Pirates and focusing on what seems to be a more interesting series this weekend. I hope the Phils don’t do the same thing tonight.)

Pedro can’t go on short rest. He looked tired out there on normal rest Sunday.

Well what do you know, runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. It’s like our new favorite situation to be in…

I think we’re gonna have a big offensive night.

Way to go Howard. Getting a hit with RISP. Who knew?

This Phillies offense makes me sick. Bases loaded, nobody out, only one run that wasn’t scored on a hit. This offense isn’t as good as it seems on the surface; we’re 22nd in the leage with runners on base. It’s truly home run or bust. Ugh. Could it be first inning and done again?

The offense needs to stop always swinging for the home run and the risp struggles will stop.

I read on ESPN that Vick got a standing ovation. That might be the most embarrasing moment in the history of Philly sports

    Oh boy risp.

I know that Pedro could not possibly be used on short rest. I was just saying that I wished that Pedro could have been used against the Pirates rather than the first game in the Braves series. Hanson vs. Pedro does not seem promising tomorrow night. I wish Happ could have been used tomorrow against Hanson.

I hope Victorino comes through here with 2 man in scoring position!

Just pathetic they love to let teams hang around.

Morton threw a tough pitch there to Victorino for the strikeout but Shane has been slumping a bit lately. I wonder how many runners the Phils have stranded in this series up to this point.

joedad- the embarrassment is how the Iggs are playing…

The Phils just can’t seem to break it open against the Bucs.

Do you think Ibanez is injured?

i think he’s hurt. Hasn’t been the same since he’s been on the DL

no i don’t think he’s injured. I think he just played WAYYYY over his head the first half and the league has figured him out.

Ibanez carried this team for two months to put this team in reach of the position its now in, it’s clear he’s hurting and he should be cut some slack… He’s earned his paycheck for this year.

That’s definitely possible tee but he has struggled significantly since his return from the DL. I’d love to see his numbers pre and post DL

Awww… But seriously guys: we need some insurance runs. We can’t go into the 9th with a 1-run lead again.

    Well, that’s the game…

(SIGH!!!) Well, I guess we don’t have to worry about going into the 9th with a 1 run lead.

    Unbelievable.

The Pirates pitching is 13th out of 16 in the NL and we can’t score off them? Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
