Philadelphia Phillies (73-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (52-72)

J.A Happ (10-2, 2.59ERA) vs. Charlie Morton (3-6, 5.21 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at PNC Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 80

The Phillies and Pirates will play the rubber-match game of the series tonight.  Even though the Pirates are a last place team, they’ve kept pace with the Phillies during this series. The games have been close and down to the wire.

The Phillies will hand the ball to J.A Happ, who has the lowest ERA of any rookie since Hideo Nomo in 1995.  He has been one of the most consistent starters, and isn’t phased when runners reach base.  Happ allowed one run in seven innings when he faced the Buccos in July.  He limited them to four hits, and walked two.

Charlie Morton gave up two runs in 6.1 innings in his last outing, rebounding from a game in which he allowed ten runs in one inning.  Morton faced the Phillies last season and gave up five runs in two innings.  Shane Victorino homered off him.  Victorino, the team’s leading hitter, is batting just .222 in the last seven days.

The offense needs to provide Happ with run support, something they’ve lacked in the past two games.  With the ninth inning troubles, it would be nice for the Phillies to get a comfortable lead, big enough so that it is a non-save situation.

Tonight’s lineup: Rollins (SS)/ Victorino (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Werth (RF)/ Ibanez (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Bako (C) Happ (P).

When in Pittsburgh, drink the beer I suppose. This staple of Western PA carries little sophistication other than the many different tailgate games that it’s good for. The macrobrew is about on par with Miller, Bud and Coors (only around 4% ABV) except maybe with a little more soul. Eat it with some classic ‘burgh food like brats or any sandwich topped with french fries. – By Brian

    blame it on the offense.

yikes…gotta put this one on the shoulders of the offense. Happ 8 innings; 3 earned runs. At least we will see Capps in the 9th

JA Happ is human after all. They are gun shy to send anyone from the bullpen out there right now after the past few nights, so they were not going to take Happ out if he kept cruising.

I honestly don’t think Happ should have been in the game still. But I guess Charlie has no confidence in the back end of the bullpen. Wonder why?

Jeltz goes to the offense…that was bound to happen soon or later.

Offense really let Happ down tonite.

Still, Ill take 8 inning and 3 runs. Still well beyond a quality start. the REAL story of this pirates series that the offense has not done DIDDLY POO against a poor overall pitching staff in the pirates. THe Pirates are comprised of Andrew McKuteon (clearly a multiple time all star and gold glove CF are on the horizon for this guy) and a bunch of guys. Duke is ok, Maholm is ok. Other than that, I dunno. I think they should be able to grab a run off of Capps.

And we didn’t even face Duke.

Im sick of watching Pedro look weak getting HIMSELF out….looks like the closer of the day is Park if we can get a lead.

OK guys: if you don’t get a run, you don’t get the luxury of bowing it in the bottom of the ninth. Got it?

well we won’t have to see Pedro after this year.

    Stairs will GIDP.

Really stairs the guy hasn’t had a hit in over a month but it was off the guy he’s facing.

Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about Stairs always trying to hit a home run. Sometimes a single is what you need. Am I wrong?

WOW! How did Stairs miss that????

should have been a sweep instead they lose 2 out of 3 this hitting with runners in scoring position thing is getting ridiculous, and stairs can’t even catch up to a fastball anymore

    argh.

WHY THE F is Jimmy swinging at the very first pitch? I swear to God no one on this team knows what patience is by Werth.

can someone tell capps that the pirates didn’t just win the world series

Yeah they did. For them, they did.

This might have permanently damaged Happ. Ive never seen him upset like that.

THis offense needs to get chewed out. This was their worst offensive performance in weeks. That was a DISGRACE. THe Pirates have a terrible pitching staff.

The offense has been HORRIBLE the entire series. How many men were left on base? Shane has cooled off, something is wrong with Raul, and the bottom of the order sucks. Don’t feel bad Happ, it was the offense.

Phils offense is overrated we got shuy down by one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball.

and thats how you close a game out. pathetic. beat 2 of 3 by the pirates. please get rid of stairs. he is pathetic. yes he hit a couple homers. raul is pathetic as well. did he forget how to hit. could of been up 8 games. now its seven for both braves and marlins. let them hang around. we will lose.

    Pathetic. Offensive. Effort.

This crap may fly in the regular season against bad teams when you’ve got a big division lead, but it’s a 5-game division series loss. Awful. Terrible. And ultimately?

    UNACCEPTABLE.

If we don’t hit 3-run homers, we’re on the lesser side of mediocre. And that’s that.

what a disappointing series. let a bad team hang around in every game and got what they deserve. too bad for J.A. and Joe.

only getting one stinkin run in that 1st inning is a killer, its unbelievable how bad this team is with RISP right now

The offense was expose by the Pirates. This game was over in the first inning, when they only got one run with the bases loaded and none out.

I feel bad for Happ. He looked really upset/frustrated. You should be able to win a game when you give up 3 runs over 8 innings.

I agree, this offense needs to get chewed out. Ibanez needs to sit for about a week.

I love the Phillies but they sure do kill me at times… you need to stick the fork in Morton in the first inning. I cannot fathom at all how you don’t score at least 2 in the first with the sacs loaded and Howard + your big guns behind him in there. You need to knock guys like the Pirates out early b/c they’re young and inexperienced. Also, their best HR hitter (Jones) is Ryan Howard-esque where you throw him cheese or junk on the outside and lower part of the plate. Don’t challenge their only legit power hitter with an inner half fastball. It’s gut-wrenching to watch games like that be lost. Great effort from Happ. Raul should get the Jeltz. He looked like me out there. I won’t sleep well after this one tonight.

Stairs is at the end of his road after the season, even though he wants to come back again. Hes slowin down. OR maybe saying his energy for th epostseason, cant tell with those old guys.

.258 as a team with RISP, below that after the break. that won’t get them deep in the playoffs

This series will have to go down as a wake-up call to Charlie, who put in his two biggest favorites at critical moments – Stairs and Lidge – and did not get the desired results. This team is based on starting pitching and defense. The offense, for all the runs that it scores, can go colder than any other in baseball and make the most pedestrian pitchers seem like experts. At least they won’t have to return to Pittsburgh this year.

Everyone complains about Lidge. The offense should have blown out this Pirate pitching staff badly in all 3 games. The Pirates have NO FREAKING BULLPEN, they had half of one before they traded them all away but they have no relief strength. Pathetic. You cant wreck that bullpen? What?

something has to up with Raul. He way overachieved in the first half, but this 9-week stretch has been painful to watch.

their offense really does stink when they aren’t hitting the long ball, they only hit .258 as a team which is good for 11th in the NL, and then when they get RISP they stink even worse

Cholly should give raul the braves series off and give francisco some starts.

Lidge is an enormous question mark, as we all know, but you’re right, Geoff, to wonder about the offense. I have never seen a team that can be counted on not to score with RISP like this. Their swings don’t change with two strikes or with runners on; they need to shorten up more and put it into play, not necessarily into the seats.

The whole offense, except for Bako, for the Jeltz Award. Bako had a decent game. Feliz and Ibanez were pathetic this whole series. Ibanez struck out what, three or four times tonight? Happ made a couple of mistakes on the home run pitches but other than that, pitched a decent game. The offense owes him an apology for no run support. What are they going to do against a hard hitting Atlanta club this weekend? The Pittsburgh PNC ball park jinx continues.

Francisco has been pleasant thus far but have a RHP throw him a slider off the outside corner and he’ll miss everytime… it’s crazy.

    3 day chokefest mercifully ends.

When this team TANKS, they don’t mess around.

I tried to schedule a business trip to Pitt just to take in a couple of the games this week because it’s so easy to get tix, Boy am I glad that didn’t work-out!

Bako had a decent game? the man was on all 4 times he was up and hit a homer

  • Happ pitched real good but …when ya have O bullpen ya get burned…even if it;s the Pirates….alot of guys are tired and some are hurt…and some have really shot their load like Raul….he’s 37….when was the last time Matt Stairs got a hit….hmmmmm….

Thats why Ive been calling for an extra late inning reliever ALL FREAKING SEASON and they have not done it. I was concerned about Romero and I turned out to be right, but I had no idea Lidge would be a problem too. They need ANY help they can find on the wire this weekend.

Raul = Jeltz Award. He won it hands down tonight.

It’s ridiculous how they wasted a quality start from JA. They really need to get it together with RISP. And Raul should take a JRoll-esque benching to get it together. He looks plain awful out there.

    Sign Penny for the bullpen

    should have signed smoltz.

Never in my life have I been so annoyed! You’d think the Pirates’ starters were Cy Young candidates! Paul Bako hits this stiff tonight and Ryan Howard doesn’t? This is ridiculous! Happ threw a good game and got an L for it! We should have had this game blown open in the 1st inning! You think Lidge is our problem right now? Our problem is that we can’t score runs when facing mediocre pitchers! The Tim Reddings of the world continue to dominate this team! I can’t wait to see what we do if some team in the NL gets Brad Penny! He’ll probably no-hit the Phils!
