Hamels Can’t Find Location in Loss

Location, location, location.  Cole Hamels’ problem haunted him as he continued to struggle with his command in the Phillies 4-2 loss to the New York Mets.

After an hour and sixteen minute rain delay, baseball was underway.    Ryan Howard continued his hot hitting with a RBI single in the first inning.  The Mets tied the game at one on Daniel Murphy’s ground out.

Hamels can’t seem to find control of his fastball.  Carlos Ruiz set up down and in to Angel Pagan.  The pitch was right down the middle, resulting in a run batted in for Pagan.  For Jeff Francouer, Ruiz’s glove was positioned high and out of the strike zone.  Again, the pitch was down the middle, and Francouer took advantage.  Francouer (3-for-4) homered and the Mets had a 3-1 lead.  The Mets added another run on Omir Santos’ sacrifice fly in foul territory, in which Howard made a terrific catch on.

Because Hamels is unable to locate his fastball, he can not throw his changeup effectively.  His velocity is there, but  needs command of his fastball to set up his off-speed pitches.  It isn’t that he is close;  he is missing his spots badly.  Once Hamels gains command of his pitches and stays away from the middle of the plate, he’ll be the successful pitcher he once was.

Hamels lasted five innings.  He gave up four earned runs on ten hits.  At least he made them hit their way on.  He struck out six and did not walk a batter.  No Phillies starter has walked a batter since Sunday.  Chan Ho Park’s walk to Jeremy Reed ended a 33 walk-less streak by the Phillies staff.

The Phillies had plenty of chances to score, but did not capitalize.  They were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.  After Pedro Feliz’s RBI single, the Phillies had a golden opportunity to score in the sixth inning.  With the bases loaded and one out, Ben Francisco and Jimmy Rollins each popped out to the infield, ending the threat.

Down 4-2, the Phillies made some noise in the ninth.  With one out and runners at the corners, Francisco Rodriguez struck out Chase Utley and Howard to end the game.  Even though the Phillies have a 13.5 game lead over the Mets, this series isn’t one to take lightly.  As shown in K-Rod’s game ending strikeout celebration, the Mets want to beat their arch rivals.

I know I’m going to get boo’d for this comment but here it goes…

Hamels is over-rated…Been saying that for years! He’s nothing but a #3-#4 guy in the rotation with one hell of a change up. When he’s good, hes hot, but he’s been so cold you might as well throw a scarf around his neck, and stick a carrot on his nose and start calling him frosty.

I kind of agree with Chris. His ERA agaisnt the Mets is in the 7s now I think! And as much as I love what he did in the play offs last year, it was the Brew Crew, the Dodgers, and the Rays! I can think of maybe 5 threatening batters combined on those teams and that’s a stretch! Don’t think for one second it will be that easy this year! Having said that, it’s not like the man is making bad pitches.

Hamels’ problem is, he is doing what he should have done in spring training which is trying to find a third pitch. I’m fine with that early in the season. But even tonight, that change up was what was getting them out. Not his attempt at throwing a cutter.

Hamels is young, I think we’ve yet to see the best he can do. I have feeling he’ll rebound eventually. I’m done playing the blame game. He’s good enough to see his way out of this. Even if this is the best we can hope for from him this year, it’s not like Lee, Blanton, Happ, Martinez/Moyer are stinking up the joint. The Phils will be fine.

Ah.h… the fickle finger of fate. Already one “fan” is calling Hamels “over-rated”. Nevermind his past accomplishments including MVP awards in both NLCS playoffs and WS last year. This fickle fan (Chris I) certainly has that “What Have You Done For Me Lately” attitude. (chuckles).

Sure, there is enough blame to go around for the entire team in tonight’s loss. However, let’s be fair and give some credit to the opposing pitcher. Whereas Hamels had problems with his location, Mike Pelfrey did not. He seems to have the Phillies’ number. In fact, he leads all N.L. pitchers for wins against the Phils this season with 3. His line reads 3-0 and a 3.92 ERA in 4 starts against the Phils.

Lets hope the Phillies do a better job with RISP this weekend against those pesky Mets playing the role of “spoilers”.

Well last night is over, I just hope to God we win this series. If we don’t win the series then it is a serious disappointment. Everyone else beats on the Mets so the Phillies better.

Cole is not overrated, he’s just having a bad year.

That being said, I feel like I’ve been dreading his starts for much of the year and at this point, its not unrealistic that the post season rotation (If we make the playoffs at all) should not include Hamels as the #2 starter behind Lee.

    Lee-Blanton-Happ-Hamels

I dont think you put a guy who has been bad all year i the #2 spot just b/c he was great last year. I dont trust him on the mound right now.

Cole Hamels has made 24 starts this season and has given up 4+ earned runs in 10 of them and failed to go 6 innings in 10 of them. Utterly disappointing.

Why…WHY does this website never seem to give Hamels the Jeltz when he so clearly deserves it? Cole Hamels was supposed to be our ace. He sure as hell isn’t acting like it, because we ain’t winning the division if our games against our divisional opponents go like this.

You know I slept this one off a bit after slugging down a bit too much Old Grandad last night and I came to the conclusion that while Hamels has struggled, these last handful of outing haven’t been too terrible. As bad as last night was, you would think the offense wouldn’t have looked so asleep.

What I love about this year is the fans. The Phillies are rolling. Yes they will lose games to horrible teams like the Muts. They just swept the Dbacks, Cubs, and should of swept the Braves. Hamels is way off. Pelfrey pitched a good game. We will be fine. We have Happ, Lee going. Yes the Marlins are pests but that will keep us sharp. We have redding tonight vs. Happ. Should be a win. Then we have the Pirates coming up.

Yes Hamels had hard time locating last night, but at least 4 of the hits were infield hits, and the first hit should have been an out if Peter Happy was playing, really only 2 hard hit singles and the HR. So I think you people have to relax a little, Cole has not pitched great, but he also has run in to some bad luck also. When September rolls around
    Cole will dominate

I apologize if I’m belaboring the obvious but I think Cole has two problems: He’s not locating and he needs that third pitch. That curve just doesn’t cut it. Cole need only look at the evolution of Cliff Lee. A cutter? Just a little one? Please? Something that can run back across the outside of the plate. I can only remember a handful of great two pitch pitchers and they all had devastating fastballs, which Cole does not. I think this is an adjustment year for him, which is OK. He IS our #4 right now. I hope he can be the #2 again come Oct.

something i was thinking about last night is that it seems like cole’s fastball has lost something since last season. i’m not talking about MPH or even location, but maybe deception or some movement on it? it just feels like you almost never see him strike anyone out with his fastball this season… when he tries to get a K with a fastball is when he gets into those long foul ball battles. while the changeup has always been his out pitch, he used to be able to get SOME strikeouts with his fastball also.

Cole’s suffering from the same problem Myers went throgh and it’s all about the fastball, he’s got the velocity and can throw it for strikes but he’s misplaced the ability to command it and if he can’t command his fastball doesn’t matter whether he adds a cut or a sink to it beause the hitters wait on something meaty. Then because of the poor fastball and a growing lack of faith in it Cole starts throwing his change to get ahead (just like Myers was using his curve when he was struggling) and letting guys see his entire arsenal and cherry pick their pitch in too many ABs. To top it off when he isn’t setting up his change effectively he can’t throw that great circle-change down and away from the hitter and any pitcher who looses his primary pitch is going to drop down a level.

I don’t think the importance of the of-season can be under-estimated, baseballs all about routine and adjustments and Cole didn’t reapeat or improve on his his off-season prep, seems a pretty clear reason why he’s struggling to me.

@Mike D: I’m with you on this one.
How can this loss result in Werth getting the Jeltz award? Makes no sense!
Is it because Werth can handle the negative and Hamels cannot? Hamels looks lost on the mound. He’ll figure things out eventually but as I stated here before, he seems to be throwing instead of pitching. Afraid of making a mistake and when one happens he comes unglued.
    GO PHILS!!!

There are so many things to be thankful for, we have the best Phillies team in years and such a gifted core of players. They brought and continue to bring hope and success to the Philadelphia sports scene. Let’s not emotionally drown ourselves in one person’s underperformance and attach ourselves to personal expectations that will end in only in disappointment, and instead step up our attitudes for this awesome team. Go Phils!

Hamels’ poor performance-by now the rule rather than the exception -overshadowsed a huge problem with this team. The frustrating inabilty to get runners in from 3rd with < 2 outs.

Then again, they sucked at it all last years too, until the last 2 innings of the WS.
