Rain Delay Specialist Earns the Victory

Call him the “Rain Delay Specialist.” It was deja vu for Jamie Moyer, who relieved after Pedro Marinez’s start was shortened due to rain. Thanks to Moyer, two Ryan Howard home runs, and a 1-2-3 Brad Lidge save, the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-2.
After Martinez completed two scoreless frames, Howard hit an opposite field home run through the rain drops. With the rain falling at a steady pace, the tarp rolled out. After a brief delay, the tarp was removed even though it was raining heavier. The remainder of the inning was finished, but the tarp was put back on. A total of one hour and 48 minutes were delayed because of inclement weather.
Rain continued to fall throughout the evening, but not enough to pause play. Out of the bullpen, Moyer did his job. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one run on Matt Diaz’s RBI double. He gave up four hits and struck out five. Since being demoted to the bullpen, Moyer has given up one run in 10.1 innings. He has struck out ten and hasn’t walked a batter.
Howard (3-for-3) homered again, his 37th of the year. This time it was a two-run shot to center field. Pedro Feliz added a RBI bloop single in the seventh inning. With a 4-1 lead, Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge would have to close it out.
Ryan Madson got into a jam. He surrendered one run after allowing three hits and a walk. Adam LaRoche flied out for the final out of the inning, and the birthday boy escaped the bases loaded threat. There was only hope that Lidge would not blow his Major League leading tenth blown save.
With two quick outs, Lidge fell behind 2-0 to Diaz. He came back firing. Diaz chased the 2-2 slider, ending the game. Lidge secured his 26th save of the year. The win over the Braves extended the Phillies lead in the division to eight games.

Madson needs to stay in the pen until he gets his stuff together. He must be getting the incompetence disease from Lidge. They did their best to lose it last night but somehow Atlanta batters were more incompetent than these two loser closers clowns. Everybodys heart at the bank must have skipped a beat (43,000 missed heart beats) when LL came out (Loser Lidge). It was his game to lose. I guess the odds are he saves one and then gets the BS and losses after. Look for Manuel to bring his buddy Lidge out, even if it’s 10 times in a row. He’ll blow his next 2 save ops and outright lose a game in his next appearances. Ibanez ought to be kissing Howard’s tush because Ibanez is quickly becoming Triple A fodder. He needs to be benched. He’s a friggin disgrace.

by george I think you’re an idiot…….. WTF are you talking about Captain Space Dude? Madson has been lights out. He struggled tonite because umm, umm Charlie made him try to save a game the other day. When he closed earlier in the season and struggled, it took him weeks to recover mentally. Madson will be fine as long as Cholly doesn’t keep moving him back and forth… Tell the guy with the big yellow hat I said hi… Lidge was put in a bad spot on Mon by you know who. Let’s see how he in his next couple of outings… Unfortunately we have no other viable option with at the moment…Ibanez will be fine too. He’s been hitting better as of late, and his triple lead to the very important insurance tonite..

Manuel made everyone happy last night – fans, lidge, madson, chan ho, moyer…. a rare occurrence but it won’t last. Loser Lidge got lucky last night. I’m sure morale went down as soon as he appeared for the save opportunity. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Pedero and Moyer put a towel over their head when Lidge was out there. This is what Schilling did when Mitch Williams was out there because he was always wild and blew saves and lost games for Schilling in 1993. I hope Meyers gets a shot at closer…Lidge needs to be given a couple of weeks off – get his head together – preferably in Triple A territory.

The Pittsburgh game was very bad..but Lidge has now pitched well in four of his last five outings. Last night was great. He appears to be putting it together….so let’s give him a few more weeks before burrying him. The Phillies chances of winning a 2nd consecutive WS increase dramatically if Lidge is shutting teams down in the 9th..and Madson is doing the same in the 8th.

According to George, if major league players are in a slump, the best way is to send them to Triple-A ball? Way to represent intelligent Philly fans.

Lidge just got back from Triple A. What do you think the Mets and Pirates are?

Please note (B-money in particular): The silly comments posted concerning “Loser Lidge” and other “triple A fodder” were posted by george, not George. I like to think I’m less of a whiner than the george who doesn’t even capitalize his name.

Yes, B-money:
Triple A ball. Where else are they going to get their confidence up and the at-bats, nitwick? No, let them hang around the Phillies and bring them down with his strikouts, fly outs and ground outs. No wonder the RISP is pitiful. Stick to your day job….

I agree with Repeat!…george (note the non capatilized for letter) is a moron, HOWEVER, he had one thing correct. Every Phillies phans heart skipped a beat with Madson and Lidge. Sadly that was correct, BUT Madson worked out of the jam, unlike when he closes (Madson is just NOT a good closer) and Lidge had a 1-2-3 inning! to George (note the caps in the first letter) may I suggest to add something to your username so you arent confused with the idiot. Oh and another thing for idiot george. I think it would have been a great idea to bench Ibanez last night after he went 0-2 (sarcasm). Oh crap wait a minute, he hit a triple. DUMB@$$. What a disgrace for only hitting a triple. Props to the Old Goat Moyer again. 1 ER in 10.1 innings in relief! As much as I am hesitant to say Pedro is actually effective, its hard to say if he is or isnt back to his old self. His first outing was 5 innings (not bad for a first outing in over a year) He also has 2 outings shortened greatly by rain. True he didnt give up a run last night, but can we really say he is effective in 2 shortened rain outings? I want to see him pitch for 6 innings. The shortened outings due to rain are getting annoying.

george what about Howard? about a month ago he was striking out constantly. Maybe Cholly should have sent him down to triple-A. Uh oh, he has what 15 homer, 29 RBI’s and batting .303 in the last 15 games. Darn. “Stick to your day job…”

Lidge got that little baby slider over the plate at least once last night. I think thats a very important pitch for him because that gives him two pitches he can throw for strikes. Has anybody noticed that Ibanez is in a bit of a funk?

You’ve got to give real credit to Jamie Moyer who’s stepped up when called on and has gone out there with a disciplined starters mentality. Those rain delays can cripple a team when it comes at a bad time and to have a guy who in back-to-back appearances has come in and protected the rest of the bullpen is something that cannot be thought of as just a minor thing.
Credit to Lidge to for bouncing back, he should not have been on the mound for the 4th straight day to blow the save the other night and though this isn’t the Lidge of old, he may just be able to suck it up enough and gets the outs to take this team as far as it’s going to go.

Despite his triple last night, I really am disappointed in Ibanez. I thought one of the things that was supposed to be so good about him was his consistency–he never went into long slumps. Hopefully he’s about to break out of it. I have to admit, though, watching him switch into overdrive to get that third base was a thing of beauty. And, as for Lidge, he did well last night…after he’d had a couple of days rest. I think that really is the key to using him right now.

NJ- While I’m happy with Lidge’s performance, I saw a couple of pitches last night that should have been crushed but weren’t. Maybe credit to Lidge for having the hitters off balance thus making it able for him to get away with it. Whichever, and whatever, I’m happy with the save. RE: 4 nights in a row, Lidge’s velocity was good on that night he blew the save. He has talked about how he gets sharper the more work he gets. Well, he got it the other night. I want him to pitch well and I hope this is he start of a hot streak for him.

While I agree its disappointing to see Ibanez in his current slump, I still think everyone goes through slumps honestly. I think he will break out of it, but you still have to have alot of respect for him, regardless of the slump, regardless of the hit or anything, he hustles. Some players if they hit into a ground ball, they kind if half @$$ the run to first. Ibanez seems to put forth the same quiet work ethic and hustle day in and day out.

Madson always has a mini slump after blowing a save which is why he shouldn’t close, period.

I think it’s going to be a fine line for Lidge between him getting crushed off good pitches and getting away with throwing junk, 4 days of work for any reliever is the fine line so it didn’t surprise me to see him struggle no matter how he felt. The results from here-on are all that’s going to matter but for better or worse it’s fair to say we do have our closer, just not the lights out one we want.

Also, george, no one on this team is a disgrace! This is a team of Champions. Magic number for division is 28, for NL 36.

In Cholly’s defense, Lidge pitched 4 days in a row once last year. He probably wanted to see if Lidge was all the way back and able to do it again this year. When your team is up so much in the division, you have the luxury of experimenting. The way I see it, there are 2 options for closer in the postseason, Lidge and Myers. I want Lidge in there if he is pitching well. He is a more dominant closer when he’s on than Myers. He has pitched in the highest stress environment last year and dominated. Remember Myers has had struggles as a starter in first innings for the past 2 seasons so there is no guarantee that he would do well with no margin for error.

George is an idiot. This team wants Lidge to do well. They need him. He was nasty last night. I still think that knee is the problem. He does not drive to the plate anymore.

I’m not sure if Ibanez is just in a slump, or he’s still affected by the injury that interrupted his season. Look at the way he lunges at the ball — he obviously can’t generate power from his legs the way he did early on. In any case, you guys who are ragging on him should step back and think where the team would be if he hadn’t carried it on his shoulders the first two months of the season. And it’s still better to see him out there in left than the lumbering Burrell.

as i said before: they’re going to need every arm they’ve got in this last stretch of the season. even jamie and yes, even brad. games like this are proof, especially coming off madson’s recent blown save. that said, i wouldn’t risk overworking lidge again anytime soon, and would gladly see park get a shot at a save here and there. and having moyer for long relief/spot starts looks like it might be a better role for him than being in the rotation, which is just great to see him still contributing.

One quick comment for george. How much longer do the Iron Pigs still have on their schedule? Final game is the 7th, I believe. A couple more weeks does not exist in AAA.

The most amazing thing about this team is the way they always have each others’ backs, it doesn’t matter who is faltering or having a rough stretch, someone is there to pick up the slack. There seems to be a closeness among all the players, very rare and not something you see with other teams. I’ve been watching them in the dugout, and the other day when Werth was having a bad day at the plate, he went back to the bench dejected, and one of the guys walked past and patted him on the knee. And after Happ gave up the lead Thurs, same thing in the dugout. I’ve seen Charlie do it too, and it’s little things like that which make the difference between a bunch of guys on the same team and an actual TEAM. It is truly a wonderful time for the Phillies and their fans, and I’m proud to be a member of this teams’ fanbase.
george, you need to get a grip and just enjoy this time, it definitely won’t last forever, and throughout the years there will be more bad teams than good ones, so hop on in for the ride or go screw yourself, makes no diff to me.

here is my updated version for the Mets season.Do you see what I see The Mets loosing constantly.I can see the reason clear for the first time of th year Santana isn’t here. And look there rain coming form the sky. a strom is coming by. I say why begin if we know we can’t win. and if we cannot win why bother to begin. This game is not our choosing why should we risk loosing. They say Mets give up a fight still to next season I say goodnight forever goodnight. Does anybody care? dose anybody see what I see? I see home runs I hear the Mets bats roar. I see Mets fans free forever more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big props to Georgie for the above comment. An 8 game lead for your team at the end of August is no good if you can’t enjoy it…so either stick to the positives (Howard, Moyer, Lidge last night) or just don’t watch. Obviously after a couple tough losses we are all gonna have some concerns, but after a big win against our toughest division rival at this point in the season? No need for the doom and gloom.
Kudos to Jamie for making me proud again….and kudos to Ryan for convincing me he just may hit a home run every time he comes to bat.

The rosters expand on Setember 1. Which is great news because you can bring up some of the young talent to see if they’ve got the nerves to help us in October. That’s how Price got his shot with th Rays last year. I wonder if they’ll bring up Scott Mathieson(probably the wrong spelling). He throws hard and he may be able to help us. And I wonder, just wondering if there are other hard throwing guys that we could bring up… Why not give Mr. Drabek a shot? Does anyone think they’ll bring up Mayberry Jr. again? I don’t know the farm system like many other posters on here, but maybe we give him a few abs here and there. I know he struggled the ist time. But he would be better to start in right from time to time than the struggling Stairs. At the very least he would be a defns upgrade. I think M. Taylor is hurt?

Like your muttah, the Mets suck. And the Wilpons are stupid as *uck.. They spent a $140mill on a bunch of **ssies. But they could’ve gotten your wife, your sista and your muttah all for only a couple of bucks. It’s only fitting that they play in Flushing… They should change their name to the New York Wet Wipes. The Wilpons got for money issues than Wesly Snipes…But at least Wesley wasn’t robbed by the Madoffs… I’d bet the Mutts watch the Phillies DVD while they -ackoff. God damn the Mutts are so *ucking soft….
