Story Changes For Myers

Brett Myers lied again. Myers’ rehab appearance on Saturday was pushed back because he had a swollen eye. Initially, Myers claimed that he injured his eye while playing catch with his 4 year old son. A day later, the story changed; he said that he fell out of his truck and landed face flat. Myers said he changed the story because he was “embarrassed” of the truth, but fessed up because he felt bad that he lied. However, according to sources, the real story is that he was punched in the face.
“He’s a grown man; I’d like to see him be a professional,” Charlie Manuel said. “At the same time, there’s not a whole lot I can do when he’s down in rehabbing and getting ready to pitch. When he’s [in Philadelphia], my concern becomes greater. I don’t want him to get in trouble.”
Myers was at a bar with his wife and friends, to see a band. An altercation broke out and witnesses originally said that Myers was not involved. The bartender said he served Myers three beers and that he looked perfectly healthy. Myers denies being in a physical altercation and police reports claim that Myers was only involved in a verbal dispute.
Myers, who is recovering from hip surgery, is scheduled for a rehab appearance in Clearwater on Thursday.

For the record, I think Amanda does a fine job as well as the other writers on this site. This article was a mistake though, but oh well, these things happen.

I’m not mad at Myers for this incident… I believe in what he last said about how he got the swollen eye…
BUT what really surprised me in this whole incident was that I (cluelessly?) thought he wouldn’t be drinking any beer when he’s in the middle of his hip surgery rehab and about to pitch for the first time in months!! Oh well… that’s just me.
Either way, I really, really hope he gets better soon and helps us big time in September… He loves the city and he loves the team… and he brings that fire to the clubhouse that’s been lacking a bit this year.

The witnesses, including the bartender, all said Meyers wasn’t involved. I thought Meyers story was scetchy both the first and second time, but I don’t believe he was in a bar fight.
Anecdotally, I almost got in a bar fight this weekend. Some drunken jackass threw a punch at my friend for no reason. Sometimes its not your fault, you don’t even have to be drunk to get in a bar fight. Especially in Florida.

I have a good friend who is 6’7, 350 pounds. And anytime he is at bar and some sort of fight breaks out, whether or not he is involved, he ends up getting punched in the face. Because some knucklehead gets beer muscles and thinks, “Wow it will impress everybody if I beat up that guy who is 6’7, 350 pounds.” And he can tell his friends about it for years. I figure that is what happened to Myers. Some knucklehead was in the bar, got drunk and noticed Brett Myers sitting there. So he decided to take his shot at infamy. This guy will now have a story to tell for years.
For years, Myers has had a million dollar arm and 10 cent head. He needs to put himself in a better position so that something like this does not happen. Don’t go to a bar the night before your first rehab start.

Another incident with Myers being a stupid drunk…he fits in well in Philly, he should spend the rest of his career there with his stupid drunk brethren.

There are so many Myers haters out there. The guys a gamer, he’s rehabbed like a champ this year when he could easily have sat on his ass, and he got punched. Who cares. If you go to bars, sometimes people will start a fight. Especially some Florida rednecks. You can’t ban athletes from going to bars, and there isn’t any evidence he’s an alcoholic.
And he’s not a wife beater, he hit his wife once. That’s not excuseable, but it’s not unforgiveable either. People love to stick their nose into everyone elses business, but as far as I’m concerned he and his wife are fairly happy together, and we likely don’t know the whole story either.

Kennedy…. Just stop it alkready. It doesn’t matter if someone hits their wife once or 50 times. They are all correctly deemed abusers. The incident in Boston was the first one properly documented. There’s no way to know if that was the first time. In most instances, it is usually not the 1st time. And why does everyone keep saying “rednecks.” That’s not a cool term to use, and the altercation could’ve just as easily involved New Yorkers or Philadelphians. We didn’t say Brett wasn’t forgiven, we were just stating the facts. Most us Phillies fans have forgiven Brett including me.

Kennedy – I agree….and would like to add this: labrum tears are usually diagnosised by scoping the hip joint….so to see evidence on an MRI means that’s there was significant damage to the labrum. In no-contact sports this injury results in chronic overuse and takes a significant amount of time to occur because the hip joint is the strongest and most stable joint in the body. That means he’s probably been pitching not only in pain but with pelvic instability affecting his delivery for quite sometime even as far back as last year….I believe this was the root of his struggles last year and somehow he modified his approach to compensate for it in Triple AAA where the he could experiment with more abandon. Not to mention he was a golden gloves boxer before turning to baseball. He’s tougher than 90% of the guys in MLB i’d guess.
The phillyburbs.com article is a questionable piece of journalism and until it is confirmed Myers sure be given the benefit of the doubt…..I for one am glad he’s a Phillie. Also people should remember he put the rotation on his back at the start of the season and did so in considerable pain.

Real tough guys don’t hit on their wives. That’s call a you know what. Not no once. Not at all. Stop makings excuses for this guy. It’s very distrubing and truly sad.

Brett Myers is a wife-beating, drunk little bitch. One time is enough. Don’t try to ever justify that by saying it only happened one time. One time is enough. And I agree with whoever said that it usually isn’t the first time. Just ’cause it’s the first time he got caught doesn’t mean it was the first time it happened. Myers should get his ass kicked brutally.

You can classify the abuse of his spouse however you please….but i think that it isn’t our job to constantly worry about the player’s personal lives unless they are constantly in trouble with the law. Obviously Brett made a poor decision (decisions?) in his marriage but his wife did drop the charges and they are still together. And a large percentage of these guys drink like fish so there is no need to classify him as a drunk.
I also think its unfair to critique his rehab and work ethic because of how far ahead he is in his rehab and how hard he worked to lose weight, go to the minors, etc. Brett has been quite a warrior for this team.
