Feliz Slams Past ‘Stros

Wilton Lopez made a huge mistake by hanging a slider to Pedro Feliz. Feliz took advantage and sent the pitch into the left field seats.  The salami and Ryan Madson’s six-out save led the Phillies to a 7-4 victory.

J.A Happ pitched better than his line indicated.  In 5.2 innings, he allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits.  He struck out six. Happ became the first Phillies rookie to win 12 games since 1959.  Happ made two mistakes: a down and in fastball to Lance Berkman and a middle-in fastball to Kaz Matsui.  Both pitches resulted in home runs.

Jimmy Rollins’ 42nd double of the season put the Phillies on the board, but it was Feliz who provided the big blow.  With the bases loaded and nobody out,  Feliz jumped on the first pitch and took it for a ride.  The grand slam put the Phillies ahead, 5-1.  It was Feliz’s second grand slam of the year, and it extended the franchise record for most grand slams in a season (11).  The rally towels proudly waved and it was loud for the rest of the night.

In the fifth inning, Jayson Werth added insurance with a two-run home run.  The runs proved to be key since the ninth inning is always nerve-racking.

Jamie Moyer ate 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.  However, on the last pitch he threw, he fell to the ground with a groin injury.

Ryan Madson threw nine pitches in the eighth inning, and returned to the mound in the ninth to a standing ovation.  Madson allowed two singles, but struck out Hunter Pence to end the game.  Madson did a perfect job of mixing his pitches and locating them in the right spots.

The Florida Marlins took care of business in Atlanta, beating the Braves 5-4.  This means that the magic number is down to one.

Nice job by Happ, Moyer, and Mad Dog. I like the fact that Happ doesn’t get fazed when he gets into jams – he just cooly pitches his way out of them. Anyone hear any more about Moyer’s groin injury? Romero’s arm was said to be “tender” after pitching yesterday. What does all this mean for Happ’s chances of being the 4th starter?

Ray Culp won 14 games as a Phils rookie in 1963. Your info was no doubt taken from the MLB game summary. They have made mistakes like this in the past. Please check your own facts in the future, and don’t really on lazy MLB writers.

With this win and the Braves loss, Phils have clinched a tie for the NL East. Time to start resting the pitching staff for the postseason that is now all but guaranteed!!!

I should have typed “rely” instead of really. I think I had that really word in there before I reworded my sentence, and somehow it got left behind when I hit delete. I often wish one could just have an edit option before the post goes up. Oh well!

I might add that this was a good game for a change. Good, but not great, because another bullpen piece appears to have suffered an injury.

Hey George, it’s interesting to note that Ray Culp finished 3rd for the Rookie of The Year in 1963. Guess who won that award. ;-)

1959 or 1963…does it “rely” make a difference

interesting note. i know we have been playing poorly of late (3 wins out of our last 8 games, 5-5 in our last 10), but none of the other division leaders are playing on fire right now. the dodgers and cards are both 5-5 in their last 10 and lost their last 2.

the wild card team is always going to be marginally hot b/c thats a closer race. the braves are playing well and the rockies are playing OK.

the phils really need to take this week and focus their energy on the playoffs. they will get one more win (or a braves loss), but they need to get healthy and peak at the right time. lets hope they can.

one more note. mitch williams said on the radio the other day that if lidge didn’t blow all those saves the phils would have clinched by now and they would be sitting ducks come play off time. this team needs stuff to play for, and when they don’t have it they get complacent. interesting idea, at least a positive idea on a bad situation.

Plus you are differentiating between two names (Jim Owens and Ray Culp) and two years (1959 and 1963) in determining the accuracy of Amanda’s statement.

Im confident we are going to clinch the division tomorrow night. After that, obviously we need to get as much rest for our starters, espeically Rollins, Utley, Howard. This will be a good chance to be able to give our bench players more atbats so they can be in a groove when they need to be in the playoffs pinch hitting. It will be interesting to see how Pedro pitches tomorrow night n may say a lot about how he will perform in the playoffs given tomorrow night is the big stage that he used to live for earlier in his career…n i think he still does. As far as the bullpen goes….if we can clinch tomorrow we can allow Romero Condrey Eyre n possibly Park to get in rythm for the playoffs, especially coming off injuries. LETS GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    @George & Bruce
Thanks for the historical clarifications. Ray Culp was great right hander who also had 5 shutouts in 1963. One was against the Houston Colt 45′s. He was unwisely traded to the Cubs for veteran pitcher Dick Ellsworth in 1966, and later played six very productive years with Boston Red Sox. I also believe he is a member of the Boston Red Sox hall of fame.
Jim Owens was more famous for being a member of the Phillies notorious Dalton gang, along with Turk Farrell and Seth Morehead, than he was for his pitching prowess. But give him credit for winning 12 with the last place 1959 Phillies which featured Sparky Anderson at second base hitting a lusty .218.

    Magic # 1

  • Good win Tuesday night, but I remain concerned about JA Happ. He is throwing too many pitches in not enough innings. It makes it more apparent that he will be sent to the bullpen for the post season.

Joe Blanton is also getting into the same problem with pitch counts and innings for my taste.

This has been a crazy September. So different than last year and the year before when the Phils were chasing, not the chased.

At long last the magic number is down to 1! (not to mention we finally beat those stinking Astros).

    Clinch tonight anyone? Woooooooooo!

And after they clinch, please rest Shane, Chase, Howard and Werth! Until last nights HR by Werth, it was downright embarrassing. Utley’s average in September and Shane’s too are too similar to our former left fielder – Chase is at .210 and Shane not much better at .229 – ugh!

Once the division is wrapped up, let them all rest up – relax, send them to an island (take Brad too) and forget about baseball for a week – let them clear their heads…

As to where all the naysayers are, I’m still a bit nervous. The Braves only lost by one run last night, and they only have two more with Florida before they win out in Washington. I’m in my 50′s and have seen too many “sure things” fall apart in this city’s sports history to totally relax until it’s totally done.

This is not 1964, I wasn’t close to born and I am sick and bleeping tired of hearing about it.

IF THIS TEAM CAN NOT WIN 1 GAME IN THEIR FINAL 6 THEY SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED INTO THE PLAYOFFS!!

They will because this team gets it done when it counts, despite some of the doomsday profits on here.

Again be grateful, this is going to be only the 2nd Phillies team in our history to make the postseason 3 straight times. Think about that and let it soak. Enjoy a 3rd straight NL East title and celebrate it.

First, I am glad that my rants from them looking HORRIBLE the last week or so has now made me look like an idiot. I love to be proven wrong, however and this goes with my second point, I obviously dont have the most idiotic comments on here. The Phillies win (braves lose) magic #1, and george55 STILL finds a negative. Are you freaking kidding me? dude, really? 3rd, can we go through a week without an injury? This is getting really bad, now Jamie Moyer. Well, the Bullpen came through, and so did “Werthless”. Speaking of “doomsayers” where are all the Werth haters calling him “Werthless”? how many is it now, 96 RBI’s and 35 homers. I think we need to get rid of him, because he sucks. I mean are you kidding me, he only has 35 homers (#2 on the team/7 in the NL), 96 RBI’s (#2 on the team/top 15 in the NL) and 89 walks (#1 on the team/10 in the NL). How dare he not get 45 homers by now. (That is a joke). So he is streaky, but still he puts up some pretty damn competitive #’s. I am glad to have Werth on the team. The team when hitting can kill any team, but as seen the game before, when they are not thinking straight can get killed by many teams. Still, this is a BAD@$$ team overall. On a side note, many people, myself included, had wondered if Manuel would finally say something, and flip out. He did have a 3.5 hour closed door meeting with the team after the first game of the Astros series. Regardless, The fish are playing spoilers again for post season hopes as they are helping knock the braves out of the wild card race, and the Phillies had a good day of hitting. They needed it. If they continued to play the way they had the last week or so, they probably wouldnt have won last night either. But they won, and we need 1 more game. True we can do it with a Braves loss, but screw that, I want to win the Division on a win, not because of a loss. But winning the division is winning the division regardless of how they do it. However, we are currently 1.5 games back for the best record in the NL. Seeing how the #1 in both leagues have done in recent years, Im not certain I would want the #1 seed going in.

Here’s something we should all take a vote on:

    Rally towels. Corny or no?

They are basically advertisements handed out at the gate come playoff time. Is there any tradition behind this or is it just some gimmick?

    I’m leaning toward corny.

They were soooo effective back then.

I love the rally towels. I have about 20 of them, I used them for cleaning all of the time.

Rally towels look cool on TV but I think overall they quiet the crowd down a bit because they use the nervous energy to wave the towel rather than clap their hands. But that was a loud crowd last night and last year in the playoffs so maybe they yell a bit more while waving the towels.

The only rally towel I have is one I had when I went to a July Texas Rangers / Yankees game. It didn’t help the Rangers much that day but it did absorb some of the 20 pounds of sweat pouring out of my body.

Whew, this was huge. This was the single most important game of the season to this point. They had to win tonight or else the panic button wouldve been hit. Ryan Madson is the closer right now as it seems they have basically annointed him that honor for the remainder of the season. Brad Lidge is gone, and I will 100% guarantee he will not be a Phillie next season. My best guess is – after seeing how they are pushing Madson – is taht they will not trade for a lcoked in closer. Instead, they will sign TWO guys who are borderline setup men/closers. I guarantee they will sign Rafael Soriano. The other might be Fernando Rodney. Guys that wont cost Brad Lidge money but who can still compete for the spot and push Madson to be better than he ever has been.

Regardless, they will let the three of them, plus other internal options, compete for the job and see who wins it, with BJ Rosenberg perhaps being a late season call-up if his success continues as it did this year with a sub 1.00 era.

As for this season. After last night, they are in position to conclude regular season business and give the main arms in the pen and a few position players some well-needed rest. Last night was THE key win of the entire season, and I suspect they will build on that and get on a roll.

@Brian, the towels say ‘Bring it on” and ‘Modells” (of course)

i remember when the population would double or triple when the Vet had the giveaway days.

For some crowds it might affect how loud the fans are, but I dont think it affects (real) Phillies Phans that much. We are very passionate, and LOUD Phans by nature. I can tell you that the rally towels didnt effect the phans at the bank last year when the Phillies wrapped up the division. It was LOUD AS HELL, and it was a beautiful site being that loud, and looking like a white out with the towels waiving!

  • Posts: 0 Phan in TN

My rally towel does not affect how cynical and negative I am with my posts. It also does not affect how loud I am whenever I offend Chuck repeatedly. Since I am seldom as right as so many of you omniscient peoples, I’ll just agree with most of you.

Phan in TN, I didnt know any of them said “Bring it On”, but I know there are dozens of different variations. The few that I have (from last season) are Modells, and that “Fightin’ Phils” I know I am wierd, but I would have rather it said “Phightin Phils” I always like seeing the PH in place of the F.

is it possible that the moyer injury is fabricated? hear me out…
what if the phils went to moyer and said “there is no room on the postseason roster for you old man”… so instead of the media frenzy, moyer and the FO came together and ‘made up’ an injury (conveniently on his last pitch) so he wouldn’t even be eligible for the playoffs….
    just food for thought…?

You guys all know Im hard on Moyer, but he is actually more useful than Brad Lidge right now, so if it came down to it it take Lidge off the playoff roster and keep Moyer on because Moyer can chew up a few innings.

gabriel, I think you’re crazy. Do you also think 9/11 was an inside job? But, on another topic, the rally towels are absolutely wonderful. They look fantastic on TV. I was there in the last week last season and got one and I treasure it now. I don’t think they quiet the crowd at all!

I am ever so sorry for correcting someone’s mistake, then correcting my own typo. One should never correct an error, no matter who makes one. We should just give him the Brad Lidge treatment, and hang him.

    Enough sarcasm.

By the way, I wasn’t trying to be nasty to Amanda, because she had limited time to post her story. She also corrects her own posts most times, which is far more professional than the MLB writers who leave blatant factual errors up for days. Note that I said it was the MLB writer who was lazy. I note, too, he hasn’t changed anything yet. If Amanda takes my wording the wrong way, for that I am sorry. I wouldn’t have thought saying “please” constituted being an “ignorant jerk,” but maybe the way I worded other things was misinterpreted.

As far as being criticized for my own typing mistake, I can only suggest that “Harry Kalas” reread his own posts.

I think Madson will be the closer from now on, especially if he’s allowed to get a save on the night the Phillies clinch… then that would practically seal the deal. (However, he might be tired if that happens today).

Before the beginning of the season, I thought that Madson would eventually replace Lidge this season… When Madson failed to do that (around mid-season), I thought that I was wrong…but hey, looks like he finally became the closer and now he’s doing helluva job. Better late than never!

There is no way Moyer would fake an injury. He deserves to be on the post season roster more than Lidge does.

Personally, Lidge does not deserve to be on this team. I will forever be thankful for what he did for us last year but the truth is, this year, he just doesn’t have it. Doesn’t make him a bad guy, just an ineffective baseball player. For this year. If he is on the team next year I hope he comes back and gives us a solid season. Doesn’t have to be perfect, but he can’t be close to what he was this year. If he is traded to another team then I hop he succeeds there. I really do hope he finds himself and his stuff again. Would be a shame to waste talent like his. When he is on, he is nasty.

I hope the Phillies sign Soriano, I love the guy. As for Rodney, not a huge fan but I would give him a shot. He has 9 blown saves combined the last 3 years…only 1 this year. I still really love Madson as the set up guy, I wish he could find the mental toughness to be the closer as his stuff is pretty nasty but so far I have not seen it. I was however impressed as I am sure everyone was with last nights effort by him.

As for rally towels, I will take those over those awful thunder sticks any day of the week. Those were by far the worst thing ever.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

gabriel, that is kind of a moronic suggestion. Moyer has pitched very effectively since he went to the pen, and I agree with Geoff, at this point, I believe he is more valuable than Lidge. The good thing is, if they win tonight and lock up the division (besides me drinking alot in celebration) it gives Lidge 4 games to work on mechanics. I do not however agree with Goeff on the point that Lidge will be gone next year. I dont think he will turn out like Eaton. Eaton wasnt perfect in the first place prior turning into the automatic loss machine. Lidge was perfect last season, and pitched the final out of the WS, so while yes, he has had a HORRIBLE year, I doubt they will say thanks for pitching a perfect year, and being a main contributor to winning the first WS in 28 years, but you had one bad year, and have to go. They will work with him in the off season and try to figure out what is going. Work on if he is tipping pitches, or mechanics.

Quit bashing the rally towels folks. Advertising? Really? Have you seen all of the W.B. Mason crap strewn across the stadium? How about Hatfield? Or, I don’t know, the fact that our ballpark is named “CITIZENS BANK park”? I love the towels…it almost creates a flaring “white-out” effect that can be somewhat intimidating. Plus, they’re great for wiping off peanut shells from your lap.

Gabriel, no chance. He was arguably the Phils best reliever.

I’ll take that bet Geoff. Lidge is back next year unless the Phils are blown away with a trade offer or he wants to be traded.

Gotta love Feliz… I’m banking on us giving the other Pedro a ton of run support tonight. I’ve been saying that they would clinch tonight for a while… I’ll be in attendance which means it’s destiny. I feel strange talking about it but I feel like I’m kind of a good luck charm when it comes to the Phils… I was there in each of the past two seasons for the division clinching wins… bought tickets at the onset last year (for the clincher) and had tickets given to me the prior year… won the WS tickets via lottery and sat in the last row at the far end of the stadium (felt like I might have been the last lottery winner). I’ll be bringing my 6 year old son to the game… and my video camera.

I love the rally towels… not sure why anyone would dislike them. It helps you feel the energy… I love when it gets really crazy because the towels will shed a light dust over the field and it makes it hazy.

Guys, I’m not going to lie, when I saw him go down, for an instant I thought, “Is that injury real?” Not that I would ever insinuate that Moyer would do such a thing, but for a second it looked like acting.

Other than that, I know Moyer is another one who is up in the air, and with the injuries, the Phillies needed that long guy out of the pen. But he is a heart attack waiting to happen, as are all Phillies pitchers these days.

I was there last night and I’m pretty sure people were leaving because they thought Lidge was coming in. What does that say? So is it better to have Moyer or not have Moyer? I’m not sure at all.

The Original Chuck P what section were you in last year for the clinching? Was that not a mad house. I can only imagine how insane it was when they won the WS. You are lucky. My cousins and I were thinking when they clinched last season, how many people NEVER experience clinching a division at home and being there, and we were there for it, and you have been to 2, hopefully 3 in a row, hopefully they keep it going tonight. I can say that when they clinched last year, it gave a new meaning to “City of Brotherly Love”. I dont think I have ever seen (or experienced for that matter) so many complete strangers hugging, shaking hands and givin high 5′s as I saw that night. Wow, I will never forget that. And I almost had tickets to WS game 5 too. :(
