BREAKING NEWS: According to Meredith Marakovitz of 950 ESPN, J.C. Romero has been activated from the DL. She also reports that Carlos Ruiz could be back as early as Wednesday.
This could be the deciding series for the Fightin’ Phils. With their magic number at three, the Phillies could clinch as early as Tuesday depending on the Braves’ outcome. The Phillies need to take care of their own business by beating the Houston Astros, who swept them in four games at the beginning of September.
When the games get bigger, Cole Hamels gets better. In his last six starts, Hamels is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA. He struggled against Houston, allowing four earned runs in six innings.
Hamels will be opposed by Yorman Bazardo, who his seeking his first win of 2009. Bazardo is making his fourth start of the season. He has not lasted more than five innings in any of his starts. Bazardo allows a lot of base runners, 2.08 walks and hits per innings pitched. Opponents are batting .341 against him.
The offense has been better lately, and they should be able to handle Bazarado. However, they have a tendency to struggle against pitchers they’ve never faced before. The “RISP” stat will be a key stat to look at during tonight’s game.
The Phillies were unable to clinch on the road, but it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise if they can clinch in front of the home crowd. The rally towels will be out tonight, and the rest of the series.
Your Gameday Beer – Miller Genuine Draft
Good ole MGD, it always surprises when you can get this beer cheaper than Miller Lite, though it’s definitely not Miller’s best offering. It is heavily carbonated and has simple grain and corn flavoring. You know what you’re getting with this one – it’s an easy drinker. I like it with cheese (wiz) fries – By Brian

getting that run that way is better then any homerun. single, steal, move over to third, sacrifice in. thats how you get it done. the braves are up 2-0/ i do not want to play them. dominating pitching and a hitting team that can go along way.

Besides the divison,The Phils are up 3 games in the WIld card .
Lets face it, the Braves are winning out , so the Phillies have to win 3 of 7 to win the division.
Not a gimme by ANY stretch.

This is maddeningly frustrating to watch. A pitcher’s duel between Hamels and some scrub?

Jeff, I’d take a solo shot every time over a manufactured run that takes 2 outs to get the run home. But I’d take the sac fly with less than 2 outs every time.

braves have won 14 of 16.
they are wining tonight.
If they win the next 2, you think the nats will stop them?
Just ONCE I’d like to see the Phillies send some + 5 ERA guy to the showers early.

Jeff – i’ll give you dominating pitching but not hitting: in the league
the Braves are 11th in AVG, 20th in SLG, 11th OBP, 16th in RBI, 22th in HR. Our Fightin’s respectively are 23th, 4th, 14th, 4th, 3rd
Cmon Cole use that curve ball ….

The moneyline on this game was outragous. Astros +260 Phils – 320 which is huge for a baseball game.

GREAT PLAY BY BAKO. Cole seems to lose focus after one time through the order. strange.

Now there’s something you don’t see every day.
I think Berkman was trying to pretend like he was safe until Bako believed him and turned his back, then he was gonna make a run for the plate. Hahaha. That’s what it looked like. And when Bako came at him, he knew the gig was up and tried for it.
Very odd play, but great block by Bako.

Who is this pitcher shutting down the phils?what is it with this team and garbage pitchers?

I just can’t fathom how an offense as good as the Phillies can make so many garbage pitchers look great. I just don’t understand it.

Jeff – sorry i didn’t see the “a” before hitting so I thought you said: “dominating pitching and hitting team….” Average hitting team with dominating can be dangerous. sounded like yesterday’s game was a heartburner for you….if we make the post season i recommend Kapidex delayed release capsules…you could probably get enough free samples from your GP…the stuff is pretty new, so you usually see all the Big Pharm sales reps. and their little black sample cases coming to and from doctor offices.

This isn’t Cole’s fault. It is the offense. This guy has a 9.55 ERA. But we have one hit.

I didn’t say this was Cole’s fault but the reality is, Cole is not helping.

Theory why we don’t hit scrub pitchers…they throw a alot of balls and since we done exactly practice plate discipline, we swing at balls. These scrubs are trying to throw strikes but they are probably balls. We need to left them hang themselves but are to ancy at the plate.
Hey I’ll take a balk
