BREAKING NEWS: According to Meredith Marakovitz of 950 ESPN, J.C. Romero has been activated from the DL.  She also reports that Carlos Ruiz could be back as early as Wednesday.

This could be the deciding series for the Fightin’ Phils.  With their magic number at three, the Phillies could clinch as early as Tuesday depending on the Braves’ outcome.  The Phillies need to take care of their own business by beating the Houston Astros, who swept them in four games at the beginning of September.

When the games get bigger, Cole Hamels gets better.  In his last six starts, Hamels is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA.  He struggled against Houston, allowing four earned runs in six innings.

Hamels will be opposed by Yorman Bazardo, who his seeking his first win of 2009.  Bazardo is making his fourth start of the season.  He has not lasted more than five innings in any of his starts.  Bazardo allows a lot of base runners, 2.08 walks and hits per innings pitched.  Opponents are batting .341 against him.

The offense has been better lately, and they should be able to handle Bazarado.  However, they have a tendency to struggle against pitchers they’ve never faced before.  The “RISP” stat will be a key stat to look at during tonight’s game.

The Phillies were unable to clinch on the road, but it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise if they can clinch in front of the home crowd.  The rally towels will be out tonight, and the rest of the series.

Good ole MGD, it always surprises when you can get this beer cheaper than Miller Lite, though it’s definitely not Miller’s best offering. It is heavily carbonated and has simple grain and corn flavoring. You know what you’re getting with this one – it’s an easy drinker. I like it with cheese (wiz) fries – By Brian

Should have kept Cole in, he could have given up that hit.

(sigh) OK, so much for my theory about Walker as a closer…

this game is over. I just can’t believe we had a 8 divisional lead last week and now it’s about to be down to 4. The braves keep winning, while we keep losing.

I truly see a sweep happening. :( We need like a vent thread on here or something…..I have no idea what to even say :( the braves win and the phillies suck. 1 of our runs came from a balk :(

Man Hamels is back to his two pitch pony ways . Why isn’t he throwing more curveballs in this weather…take advantage of the denser, colder air…it can produce more drag on the ball and subsequently more break.
I mean the cold air is giving his change up more sink. You can’t get away with two piitches against veterans like Lee, Berkman and Tejeda for 6 innings….by then they know they can wait on the change-up cause they don’t have to fear any other off speed pitch. they have a 50-50 chance of guessing fastball or change-up.

I left for a second….I came back to a plastic surgery disaster…Christ who crapped the bed!

and its time to start breathing heavy…this is not good. a magic number of 3 means nothing when the team is playing this inconsistently and suddenly our starters can’t seem to do anything.

Well, that’s it, the Phils just aren’t doing it this season, not like they’ve been playing.

Phillies already gave up on this game. It is not possible for their asses to get any tighter.

i can see happ winning tomorrow night but when the phillies dont know how to score, what good is great pitching?

first off cole is a jackas for making those comments. choke. he is a true diva. the phillies have no ace, no bullpen and our hitting sucks right now. lets face it even if we get in we are not winning it all.

@Karen: The Phils only have to go .500 to win the division. And that’s what they’ve been doing. I’m underwhelmed by their performance, but I’m not really worried.

It is OVER!!!!! We are NOT going to win three out of these last six games. What are the chances of US being the wild card team?

I am having trouble telling if they are gutless or heartless.

    Paging Dr heimlich.

Because this team is about to eclipse the 64 phils.

where will a win come from if not tonight.?

    Choking of the extreme variety.

JRoll was so right about Phillies fans being front-runners. This is pathetic: they’re 5 games ahead with 7 games left to play, and everybody is talking doom and gloom. Who do you think we are, the Mets?

Oh good, Condrey’s in, that will make it all better! Choke, choke, choke, choke, we love to choke our division away!

At the risk of sounding melodramatic….

I truly believe, with some of the performances the team as a whole has turned in since this past weekend, that we may not make the postseason.

It had to get bad for me to say that. But it’s down to the wire, and we’re playing like it’s the beginning of the season and we have a 159 game leeway.

We don’t. It’s clutch time, and the past two seasons we’ve been clutch. But i guess we really do need to have something to shoot for. We really do need to be behind the eight ball. Cause this September has been downright pathetic compared to the last two.

Pitching is faltering, our bats are cold as ice and we don’t want it.

So we’re not gonna get it.

honestly, for what this team is, they are pathetic. They show absolutely nothing. too many people had this clinched already…..and if they do the minimum to get in, how will they beat the rockies/braves/cards/dodgers?

Jimmy is the biggest front runner of them all. He only talks to the media when he is playing well and the Phillies are winning. If he had a bad game, or the Phillies lose, he is nowhere to be found.

Both. This team is an absolute disgrace. Good teams wrap divisions up and bury bad teams like the Astros. Instead they are playing like crap in every facet of the game.

It’s time to push the panic button the phils pitching sucks, the hitters make bad pitchers look like cy young winners and the bullpens a complete joke…the braves look like their gonna win out so this isn’t looking good.

On what planet is 5-5 for the last ten games “choking”? Yeah, they’ve blown this game. Life’s a bitch. So they’ll win the next one.

Catch you later guys, I am going to go clean my cat litter pan, and mop my basement. It will be more entertaining than this game.

Tracey- I would agree with you about the doom and gloom, but have you seen how they’re playing. They’re not playing like they’re gonna win the last three games. If anything they’re playing like they don’t want to win. Sounds dumb but hey, just watch for a little, or see the 8-2 lead the ASTROS have on us. Oh and the two runs? A sac fly and a balk. 2 hits total.

I’d say we might very well match the Mets of two seasons past.

@Tracey, it doesn’t matter whether or not we are the Mets since we’re playing like the Mets. If our pen was healthy, if Ruiz was healthy, if Lidge didn’t suck, we wouldn’t be worried…but then if all the above were true, we’d have already clinched.

Does anyone know the stats on the Mets collapse last year? When we bend over and give this to the Braves it will be worse, right?

looks like tyler walkers back to reality too.

This team is pressing so badly. Clearly they can not take the pressure of being the front runner. As Werth said, when their backs are to the wall they turn it on. The difference is in previous years the Phils were depending on another team to collapse so they could take advantage now the roles are reversed. Right now this team just can’t seem to do anything right. Can’t pitch, can’t field, can’t hit…it’s unbelievable considering the talent on this team. I know Charlie just likes to let his guys do their thing and expect them to come together but if he allows this to continue like he did with throwing Lidge out there then October 4th will be the Phillies last game.

This team may well not get into the postseason. They are totally lost and we cannot hit mediocre pitching like the Astros threw against us tonight. Hamels is a big fat choke. Big pitchers come up big when a win is needed. He is a half-assed excuse for a pitcher. He gives of 6 RUNS tonight against a sub .500 team.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

This is exactly why I am afraid of this team blowing it. This team is playing like utter CRAP. Not even mediocre. They need to win 3 games, and they are playing two teams who have swept them this season. The Phillies are not getting any help from the braves. I honestly believe they will blow it. I think they might win one game against the stros, and probably one game against the fish, but I dont see the Braves losing one. Like someone in an earlier post said “the Astros are sending two pithers with horrible ERA’s to the mound.” The problem is, the Phillies make BAD pitchers look like Cy Young Winners.

Ok, this is embarrassing. Happ and Lee better do their job tomorrow, and the offense better wake up against these terrible pitchers.

To Tracey: Whatever makes you think “they’ll win the next one”? It’s another no-name unfamiliar horrible pitcher like the one they faced tonight who they can’t get more than 1 hit from for the first 6 innings. We’re not playing like July and August anymore–we’re playing like June and the Braves are NOT going to lose another game.

To echo the sentiments of many, this team is a disgrace that will probably miss the playoffs. When I said this after Lidge blew that game in Florida last week, I was torn apart and told that I don’t know baseball. I know a sinking ship when I see one, and it does break my heart to see it happen. But the Phils are lifeless and the Braves are on fire. On the plus side, nothing can ever tarnish the WFC season of 2008 — that can never be taken away from us!

tyler is a joke. charlie should be fired if we dont get in. letting lidge blow all those saves. maybe we can make the wildcard.

Many have suggested that they’re tired. If this is true, then call this game as unwinnable and rest everyone for tonight, or sacrifice tomorrow to have our boys fresh for Wednesday. Or at LEAST sit Werth and play Francisco.

@Mike: Yeah, that’s the same garbage that I’ve been hearing all month, and I’m tired of it. They’re winning about half of their games. That’s all they need to go to the playoffs. And that’s assuming that Atlanta doesn’t lose any, which I find hard to believe.

I’m disappointed that they’re not going to gain any ground tonight, because I’m going to tomorrow’s game, and I wanted to be there when they clinched. Well, I’ve also got tickets for Friday’s game; maybe that’s when they’ll clinch. :\
