San Francisco Giants (72-60) at Philadelphia Phillies (76-53)

Brad Penny (7-8, 5.61) vs. J.A Happ (10-3, 2.63 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Sunny, 75
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Giants newest acquisition, Brad Penny, will be making his first start since August 21.  In his last start with the Red Sox, Penny was roughed up by the Yankees for eight runs in four innings.  Bruce Bochy, the Giants manager, said he would be satisfied with five innings from the righty.

In 20 games against the Phillies, Penny is 8-4 with a 3.72 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.  Most of that success came with the Marlins before he was plagued with injuries.  The Phillies only scored one run last night.  It was enough for the win, but the Phillies need to score more runs than that.  The offense has a perfect opportunity to explode against a struggling Penny.

Cole Hamels threw a complete game shutout last night.  J.A Happ has a couple of those on his resume.  He would like to become the first Phillies rookie to win 11 games since 1980.  Happ has never faced the Giants in his career, but if he continues his consistency he should be able to handle the Giants weak lineup.

Fuller's London PorterYour Gameday Beer – Fuller’s London Porter
Feel that chill in the air? Besides fall baseball it means that we need a warm cozy beer for tonight – a porter. This variety from Fuller’s has serious sweetness to complement its roasted coffee flavor. It’s a good sample to try if you’re not big into porters (you can probably find it on tap at a local Elephant & Castle). Have it for dessert with some chocolate ice cream. – By Brian

joedad try Carling, that’ll be your match and make you wonder if you’ve lost all ability to enjoy fluids until you taste a real beer. People in England (that don’t spend Saturday nights vomiting over the person they’ve just punched out) don’t drink British beers, rule of thumbs either beers from Western Europe or South America.

Boy I hope the Phils try and work the count with Lincecum at least a little tomorrow night, the low pitch counts for opposing pitchers is just embarrassing.

j reed- not really but wasn’t sure what else to call countries that still share our Queen.

Man they love to make bad pitchers look like good huh?I have a hunch they rock lincecum for at least 4 runs tomorrow and take 2 of 3 if pedro can be ok.

^j reed- forgot to mention there we Brits call Aussies convicts. Funniest joke I ever heard was how the British sent it’s most hardened criminals to the most unforgiving climate in the world, let them breed, challenged them to a game of cricket and still expected to win…

NJ, allow me if you will to indulge in a horrible generalization, but as a Brit are you a soccer(football) fan? I was in London a few years ago, unfortunately not long enough to take in a match. It is a goal of mine to do so before I die. Absolutely loved London, at least what I saw of it.

The funny thing is I’m a die-hard Phils and Iggs fan but couldn’t care less about Soccer. There are plenty of soccer stadiums in London but it was The Vet that did it for me.

Interesting. So how did you come to be a Phillies fan? Did you live here for a period?

A lotta family from Philly and that first time at The Vet, it was an ugly piece of knee-shredding crap… But it was our ugly piece of knee shredding crap.

hahaha and it was indeed an ugly piece of knee-shreeding crap until the day it was taken down, but it was home. Have you been to CBP? Though I certainly love the new stadium, I certainly enjoyed the simplicity of the vet. Just one big bowl. Wasn’t all the ups and downs that CBP is now just to get to the different sections of the stadium.

Unfortunately haven’t been to CBP yet, unfortunately have only been over in football season since it was opened. The Linc’s a beaut though but it doesn’t have that smell the Vet had, that smell of the fear of a career-ending injury coming from the sidelines.

NJ – that’s funny…I don’t have anything against the Aussies other than that dreadful accent. Makes me want to throw myself into a wood chipper….As to the climate…a friend of mine married an Austrialian marine biologist. She told us that when your an Aussie kid, along with your Dr. Seuss, you get another book, one that’s much thicker than all your other books with smaller print but still has lots of cute pictures. It’s called “Things That Sting”. Like funnel-web spiders who have bragging rights to the deadliest spider venom in the world…They even have a snake called a Death Adder…just to name two of the hundreds of things that kill you in minutes or turn a limb into goo in an hour…Not to mention all the big things that can devour your like crocs and great white sharks. I guess kola bears were the constellation prize. Austrialia and the Amazon are two places were God put his evolutionary experiments that backfired and couldn’t be trusted to play well with the other animals

NJ- do you have dual citizenship?

unfortunately not otherwise I would be at CBP nightly…

Aussies are funny, I think there are more ex-pat Aussies than ones living there. BTW if you want to go to a soccer game Spain’s the place to go, their government recently plowed money into one of their teams to cover a shopping spree to get back on top of the soccer world…

j reed; Australia has the most types of poisonous snakes out of all the continents, and the most deadliest. The highly poisonous King Brown snake is found mostly everywhere down there and in the outskirts and suburbs of the big cities such as Sydney.

NJ – Spain sounds nice but I’ll wait for the Philadelphia Union, more in my budget…I think one of soccer’s problems in the States (other than the low scoring which isn’t always the case. Beside baseball fans, hockey fans are already familiar with these types of outcomes)is that it televises so poorly. To get the whole scope of the match the camera has to be at some distance from the field and consequently the players look so small….You can’t see the agility of players or how fast the game moves man to man. Looks like old moves when flim didn’t have as enough frames to properly show motion at it’s real-time speed. Some of the MLS games I have watched were closer to the action and so much more entertaining. It seems like MLS fields are not as wide as those I’ve seen on televised European or Latin American matches. Could be wrong but shorter dimension would favor more offensive output.

mikeB – jesus H. What about spiders….I really don’t like spiders. I do like didgeridoos and Abroriginal paintings. But, other than as Nicole Kidman’s date I’m not going there.

add holly valance to the list. The problem is baseball fans like things slow and intricate and love all those little details, soccer fans like constant flow and its about energy not strategy, I think it’s a tough cross-over for most, certainly is for me which killed my appreication of hockey. You don’t get 1 run down with a runner on second with a 3-0 count in the bottom of the ninth or 4th and 1 with the game on the line in soccer.

I don’t know Holly Vance. I suppose baseball and football are similar in that the action has defined, regualr intervals of play which in between allow for more deliberation and therefore more strategic manuvering. I like hockey but the only strategy I know other than trapping which is an illegal defense now, is get the friggin puck…basketball strategy is a little more obvious since things aren’t moving at 30 mph and soccer strategies other than overacting for penalities are hard to see materialize with all that space. For me football is to complicated and I don’t like the NFL’ packaging…Sunday Night Football in America its too heartland for words, and is far more obnoxious that the nostagilic trappings of baseball . Also I didn’t go to a big university where football is often very important on many social and economoc levels. And high school football players are the a## holes of jock culture that most students have to endure in some capacity. Jello Biafara sums it up best in the song Jock-O-Rama off of the Dead Kennedys’ hardcore classic Frankenchrist. And with all the pads, football players look like extras in low budget sci-fi flicks. Couldn ‘t be worse than hockey players who look like penguins that crapped their pants.

Well , let’s see…i guess this about sums it up:

1.) the phillies are in a serious run scoring slump and with The Freak pitching tonight, it will continue (no way Phils win tonight)
2.) Happ seems to be in a decline. How does he give up 4 runs in 6 innings….bad time to pick up a slump Unhappy Happ..
3.) Pedro is mediocre at best…..(it’ll be proven tonight) but the Phils can’t score runs , so if Pedro allows only 1-2 runs it won’t matter because Linsecum will virtually get a no-hitter……
4.) Hamels and Lidge will revert back to true form (Losers)
5.) Ibanez went from Triple A fodder to Single A. Terrible. Possibly contributed to going off Roids after the witch hunt at the break for users and after the small talk that those first half numbers were so “un Ibanez – like”. SEND HIM DOWN!!!
6.) Braves not that far off. Phils go into a mini slump and the braves on a mini roll and they are all caught up.

How do you not score against Penny? You don’t if your in a Runs – scoring slump….normally the highest scoring team in the National League (don’t forget – it’s the Phils!) would have scored against Penny.

What then, is the answer? you go with what you have, obviously…..and don’t use Lidge in save situations, use Chan Ho or Meyers when off DL; bench Ibanez; use Moyer in earlier appearances (start him 5th,6th innings). Hope Dobbs gets better soo
    Have a nice day…..

isn’t it time to see if if Taylor can do it?

Cholly has to get Ibanez out of there.
