Gameday 2009, Posts
New York Mets (63-80) at Philadelphia Phillies (81-60)
Tim Redding (2-5, 5.78) vs. Pedro Martinez (4-0, 3.64)
Time: 8:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Clear, 75
TV: ESPN
Twitter: Phillies Nation
One down, one to go. After barely surviving another ninth inning scare, the Philllies look to take the series against the “rival” Mets and sweep the Sunday doubleheader.
Phillie-killer Tim Redding will trot out for the Mets tonight sporting a .161 opponent batting average and a 2.00 ERA at Citizen’s Bank Park. In his last start, however, he was a little wild throwing 48% of his pitches for balls. In his words, it was “probably the worst day I’ve ever had with command of the fastball.” (Let’s hope he spoke too soon with that quote.) Chase Utley has had success against the right-hander going 10-for-22.
Opposing Redding on the mound for the Phillies will be Pedro Martinez who is coming off a 119-pitch performance last week against the Nationals. The Phillies are 6-0 in games Pedro has started, and he got the win in his one start against his former team. In that game, he went six innings allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits including 2 home runs while maintaining a decent groundball-to-flyball ratio (6/14), which he has done all season (26/62). Pay close attention for his matchups against Angel Pagan who has hit 2 home runs in 3 career at bats against Pedro.
With Shane Victorino’s home run in game one, the number of Phillies with double-digit home run tallies now stands at 7. Carlos Ruiz can add to that number with a homer tonight. Also worth noting: the Phillies last five losses have all been by a single run.
The nightcap will be nationally televised on ESPN with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan calling the game.
Your Gameday Beer – Double Dog Double Pale Ale
We’re doing a daily double of Double beers today with Double Dog Double Pale Ale. This is another beer from the Flying Dog brewery in Maryland which features those gonzo illustrations by Ralph Steadman. Being a Pale Ale, it is naturally infused with hops which give it a citrus aroma and flavor. There are also sweet notes of caramel malts and dark fruit alongside bitter spices which hit you towards the end. Despite its 11.5% ABV, it is fairly drinkable beer. Have it with those leftover steak fajitas.
Go Phillies!

How about starting the game with the closer, then bring in the setup guy in the second, a mop up guy in the third and the starter to finish the rest?

I saw a 2004 postseason recap on MLB today and they showed Martinez’s famous quote, “I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy”. Fans mocked him and chanted “who’s your daddy?” to which Martinez responded, “I actually realized that I was somebody important, because I caught the attention of 60,000 people, plus the whole world watching a guy that if you reverse time back 15 years ago, I was sitting under a mango tree without 50 cents to pay for a bus.”

Phils are a disaster.
Should they manage to limp into the playoffs, they’ll be gone fast.
Can you imagine these clowns trying to close out a game against the top of the order of a good team?
(Remember all these blown saves latley have come against the bottom of the order)
OT trying to score against good pitchers?

So, I have no idea who those first people are but I think the Phillies can get into the playoffs and make a run if they can focus on the team effort rather than on individual stats…..I think Pedro is the most focused on the big picture and I am loving him each time he pitches more and more….the bullpen is a problem though

Karen, I like your frame of mind. How about Pedro?…He’s doing it again.. Once they move Lidge…The BP will be begin to stabalize… A little more than some may think. We have the depth ..We have to live and die with the O’s problems w/risp.. Just get in the playoffs because u never know what may happen… We all found that out last year.

10 in a row! Today is a great day for pitching surprises. Starting pitching, that is. The ninth inning drama was not a surprise.

This is a pitching duel between one of the top 10 all-time greatest pitchers of all time and Pedro Martinez.

Whoever said we were facing Cy Young Redding was correct. WE ARE SO IMPATIENT AT THE PLATE. This game is too close for comfort.

Our offense is once again PATHETIC. Ugh. If we lose this one, it’s solely on them. We couldn’t ask for any more from Pedro, and they just can’t support him. Sad.

The clown who was a disaster with the mets. Steve Phillips says pedro is in discussion for the playoff roster?
Try starting game 1 and our best pitcher right now.
I wonder who is going to close?
Where is Briam who predicted a mets sweep this weekend? lol

Jayson Werth was hit and didn’t score – that’s what you call a productive inning for the Mets!

Pedro Martinez, in 2009, is what I like to deem, “Pedro à la 2005.”

Well, there were instances where he showed the same grit and talent you’re seeing tonight in 2005. Mind you, Andrew, he’s only a little over two months thus far.
