Growing up in Philly, I've been up North here for the past 5 years, and as an avid phillsnation reader its nice to see a B-town shout out.As for Vermont Pub and Brewery...their beer is alright (at least compared to the aforementioned tons of other microbrews around Vermont) though if ever in town, I would recommend going for a Switchback ale. Delicious microbrew, served only on tap.Keep up the good work fellas.

Yo Phills Nation, this is Jake from Burlington, Vermont. Could rest have been the issue or was it that the Angels seem to develop a case of Red-sox-itsis come early october? And there was the Cubs...I am not cetain of how much rest Lou gave his regulars but i'd worry that the Milkly Way might collide with a rogue galaxy if the Cubs didn't club themselves to death every year. Ultimately, other than Ut's hip, my main concern is more for the bench players that are not necessarily pinch hitters, who despite some prior experience in this regard, may be called on to do so in the post season and will now have that much more stress to contend with....Granted post season stress can't be rehearsed, but the tension of stepping out of their comfort zone by pinching hitting can be address by more plate appearances. I think of it like this; bench players are to hitting what relievers are to pitching in terms of real game stress.. pinch hitter is like the closer and the other bench players are like the long man, and set-up guy, or specialist.

Ed R. I definately feel that Charlie needs to start being the one in charge, not always the players. What damage could have been done if Lidge had gone in there in the 9th? Make sure someone else is ready to go in if needed but give him some work.....from what I have seen about Lidge it is the mental/lack of confidence part that is the largest obstacle. I think there are some roster spots that would be in need of some work for potential fill ins....

Ed, I agree with you. It is a curveball that is gripped with the fingernail of one of the fingers; just a different way to give it its spin. I believe it was Bert Blyleven who first used the knuckle curve effectively.

The pitch is called a knuckle curve, not a knuckling curve, and behaves nothing like a knuckleball. His curveball looked good. Scouting reports say he can throw a knuckling curve...For me, it's hard to tell esp. when i am not sure how something assosiated with no spin works with something that has spin. Although he's thrown a few that looked like a typical nasty bottom falling out curve with additional break on it. Maybe its expectation informing my eyes or perhaps the qualifier "knuckling" is used to describe a pitch that defies classification. I saw a picture of his one of his grips where his index finger was bent and if i remember correctly the nail portion of the finger tip was on the ball...could this be the grip for that type of curveball or is it something entirely different?

Ed R. – considering the Nats have, in the NL, the 4th best AVG, 3rd best OBP, 6th most RBI’s, the 5th most hits, I’d say that Lee’s performed well. Cliff Lee entered tonite's start coming off of three consecutive poor performances, including his last start against these same Nationals last week in Washington in D.C. Perhaps motivated by Perdo Martinez's great game against the Mets in prime time, Cliff Lee threw a complete game shut out. Lee allowed just six hits on 124 pitches. He walked three, but he had 9 strike outs, including the last two Nats to end the ball game. Cliff Lee also struck out the side in the 1st and the Phils jumped to a 1-0 lead in their half of the 1st. Phillies added 4 more in the 2nd. The 4th run the Phillies scored in the 2nd turned out to be the last run recored in the game. Hitting with RISP has plagued the Phillies all season. But tonite the Phils were 4-8 in that department. The only real trouble Cliff Lee ran into was in the 4th. The Nationals loaded the bases with 2 outs, but Lee got Bard to end the threat.
