Philadelphia Phillies (77-54) at Houston Astros (63-70)

Cliff Lee (12-10, 2.83 ERA) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (12-9, 2.93 ERA)

Time: 8:05 p.m at Minute Maid Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 85

Coming off a 4-2 home stand, the Phillies head to Houston to take on the Astros.  The Astros sit in fourth place in the National League Central.  The Phillies offense is due to come alive; they averaged only 1.8 runs per game during their six game homecoming.

Lately, the Phillies have been apart of many pitchers’ duels.  Tonight might not be any different.  Lee is 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA since joining the Phillies.  However, he will try to rebound from his worst start since joining the team.  (You can vote for Cliff Lee for July’s Pepsi Clutch Player of the Month).

Wandy Rodriguez has been a pleasant surprise this season.  A career .500 pitcher, he has a 2.93 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and strikes out 8.3 batters per nine.  He was the National League Pitcher of the Month in July, when he posted a 0.75 ERA.  Perhaps he is starting to return to his old form, because he posted a 4.00 ERA in August.  Rodriguez is 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA in three career appearances against the Phillies.

Raul Ibanez will be given the day off.  Ben Francisco will start in left field.

Your Gameday Beer – Pliny The Elder
To piggyback on last night’s recommendation, tonight we offer another IPA hybrid, this time from the Russian River Brewing Company in Cali. Beer Advocate reviewers ranks this brew as one of the best. Besides the Roman philosopher, the name refers to its piney citrus flavor which is immediately noticeable when you crack open one of these 8% numbers. This is a seriously good beer and worth searching out. Kick off the holiday weekend with a blue cheese bacon bbq burger alongside a Pliney. – By Brian

    Dear Amanda,

If you can point me to a place I can buy Pliny (Younger or Older) in bottles, I’ll buy you six.

Not a good start. Looks like Groundhog day. Overrated offense gets DOMINATED.

It’s early, teejvee. And the man is a good pitcher. With that said, it’s not good when we face a good sinker-ball lefty who also throws a good breaking ball.

Wow the weirdest thing just happened…I was watching the game…Victorino had just k’ed. I hit the last button on my remote to go to the last channel I was on. I was there for maybe a second and I went back to the Phillies game. When I did, Kaz Matsui was stepping into the box and Lee had already recorded an out in the bottom of the 1st…WTF?

Welp. There goes the no hitter.

Great job by Lee to get over to first, and a good flip from Howard.

Ohhh Howard just missed that one.

Why does nothing the Phillies do surprise me anymore?

Mike D. – cause you watch them almost everday 6 months of the year

j-reed, the twilight zone would be the Phillies scoring 5 runs or so tonight…I’d love to enter that zone.

Lee doesn’t look as sharp pitching inside to righties tonight.

What’s with Rodriguez’s pencil thin douchebag beard?

Ed R. – yeah esp. in this minature golf course of a ball park…this is the first time I’ve seen Wandy pitch…he looks pretty good. His off speed stuff has good break…it could be one of those power outage nights nor the Phillies offense

    four hits already?

They weren’t kidding on the broadcast when they said “potent right-handed lineup.” Oh, we’re in trouble…

Cliff is missing on his pitches to righties, Terri. Pitching away he looks fine. Like that long foul ball, there – did you see how much Chooch had to move his glove?

    wtf Lee

Wow, things aren’t going well for Lee. Bases Loaded.

    Tough Luck.

As soon as they showed that “double-play outs” stat, I knew he was hitting. Damned Phillies broadcast epitomizes the jinx. The curse of Chris Wheeler!

this is ridiculous one garbage hit after another.

Now would be a very good time for a visit with either Chooch or Rich Dubee, Cliff.

This sucks. Its like him and Hamels cant be on all at once.

I thought Bako was Lee’s catcher??

Oh jeez, he just missed that one.

Bako isn’t starting because Wandy is a tough lefty.

Looks like another short outing for Lee is in the making.

    Lee is getting smacked around

Christ, Lee just can’t get righthanded batters, even the pitcher, out tonight. Hell.

Sad that a pitcher hitting .098 had the hardest hit of the game so far. Stro’s will probably be up 5-0 before this inning is over.

Ok guys. YOu can go do something else for a while and check back later, which is what Im doing. Just forget about this game for an hour. Lee should have thrown at ROdriguez’s head instead of allowing that double – from a pitcher. Lee is NOT on the same page as Ruiz.

OK, who is this pitcher and what has he done with the *real* Cliff Lee?

I cant figure out what happened in the past two games here. He lost his control. THis is not what we need now.

Maybe Lee is more comfortable with Bako. They should have just started him and not Ruiz.

    Maybe Bako should be catching????

gonna have to take Lee out soon

Well it was fun while it lasted, usually when Lee gets his ass handed to him its not in back to back starts. I guess the magic of Cliff Lee has run out.

Shouldn’t Rich Dubee have come out and had a chat with him two runs ago?

    Crap….

Hamels is our ace now. haha /not really funny

ugh, what happen to Lee? No way this offense scores more than 2 runs with the way they are hitting. Game Over?

Bako was catching the last game Lee started and he didn’t look any better then.

    Moyer tonight? Why not.
