Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (77-56) at Houston Astros (65-70)
Cole Hamels (8-8, 4.26 ERA) vs. Bud Norris (3-3, 6.61 ERA)
Time: 2:05 p.m at Minute Maid Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 75
TV: MY PHL 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation
After losing the first two games, the Phillies must salvage a game of the series. They almost won last night’s game, but Brad Lidge blew his Major League leading 10th save of the year. Still, the offense is lacking.
Cole Hamels will try to extend his hot streak. He has thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings. Hamels is 3-0 with a 4.41 ERA against Houston. Last year, Hamels gave up six runs in four innings at Minute Made Park.
The Phillies have been facing numerous tough pitchers lately. They might be catching a break with Bud Norris on the mound. Unlike Hamels, Norris is in the midst of a cold streak; he is 0-3 with a 13.11 ERA in his last three starts.
Today’s Lineup: Chase Utley was listed as day-to-day with a swollen right foot, but he is in today’s lineup. However, Shane Victorino is not. Victorino left last night’s game with swelling in his knee.
Rollins (SS)/ Werth (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Ibanez (LF)/ Francisco (RF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Ruiz (C)/ Hamels (P).
Your Gameday Beer – Two Jokers Double-Wit
With Labor Day upon us, we gotta get the white beers out of the way before they become faux pas. Two Jokers, from Missouri, is an excellent witbier brewed in the classic European style. The flavor embodies those tip-of-the-tongue spices like cloves, pepper, and coriander but is tempered by citrus accents. It’s a little creamier than a traditional wit, but its light body makes for easy drinking. I recommend it with a big salad topped with spicy salmon. – By Brian

i like the phils chances to do more than just “salvage a game” considering they are throwing hamels and happ vs norris and moehler today and tomorrow. a split with lots of runs in each would be nice, to say the least.

What do you know J-Roll, when you actually take a pitch, or three, good things happen.

Lets see if Cole is really back as our shut down ace.
If its a save situation I vote for Chan ho
Obviously you dont announce that lidge isnt your closer anymore. you jsut send other people out.
I actually think it would be cruel if the old man sent him out again. So not using Lidge to make saves is being a plaers manager and standing by his player.

I see nothing on the internet about Madson being out.

If it’s a save situation what Charlie should be doing is relying on the bridge to Lidge and shortening his outings to outs not necessarily whole innings.

I didn’t hear it but I had the tv on mute. if TMac mentioned it then it has to be true. Not like he would have said Madson was unavailable today since he was not used yesterday.

TV on mute LOL
People who dont have access to the other teams broadcasts dont understand how bad Wheeler is.
He is simply the worst. I feel it is bad luck for me to watch the astros broadcasts. But I am going to do it. the Sarge is hardly Mark Grace but I love him because he is the philly guy. wheeler is that bad that he ruins the phillies feed.
I will look around madson news. I too muted the pregame sound lol

Norris is a skell. We will csocre more. Just wont be Ibanez getting the hits.
Like to see mayberry get a chance.
Raoul is to hitting what brad Lidge is to pitching at this point.

NJ – that might have worked earlier in the season but with limited time, and the lack of depth in the pen esp. with Madson out, I don’t see it happening Using two guys in one inning, other than a specialist might really hamstring the bull pen’s flexibility that it needs to handle the unexpected.

Damn it!
Every time I get to worshipping the Phillies, my state of bliss is interrupted by another blown save. Lidge needs to get angry. He needs to throw inside and maybe hit a few batters (nothing in the head, just a nice thump in the meaty part of the back). Maybe that will help.
I am still fired up.
Made a t-shirt for myself for the October run:

Christ, our season is going to hell in a handbasket. Vic out, Madson out, Lidge being Lidge, Jimmy bobbling a ball he shouldn’t. We’ll be lucky if we make the playoffs.

We’re going to make the play-offs, its the shape the teams in going into that first series that has to be the focus, better we get outplayed and outworked than throw away games barely showing up.

The guy produces when he is given the chance. Seriously, he needs to be playing a lot more. Keep his bat fresh for when we need him to PH.

Fancisco’s proved to be the guy who’ll show up and play when he’s given the chance, was really impressed with him stepping in for Sizemore earlier in the year.
