Philadelphia Phillies (77-57) at Houston Astros (66-70)
J.A Happ (10-4, 2.77 ERA) Jamie Moyer (12-9, 5.07 ERA) vs. Brian Moehler (8-10, 5.11 ERA)
Time: 2:05 p.m at Minute Maid Park

Happy Labor Day! The Phillies offense has been on vacation for the last couple of weeks so today would be a good day for them to get back to work. The Astros are on the verge of sweeping the four game series.
J.A Happ can’t seem to win his eleventh game, and it’s unlikely he’ll get it today. He’s been scratched with mild right oblique strain, so Jamie Moyer will get his first start since being relegated to the bullpen.
Brian Moehler takes the hill for the Astros and has lost five of his last six decisions. He has struggled against the Phillies throughout his career (11 G, 7 S, 2-3, 6.38 ERA). The lineup collectively has good numbers against Moehler: Ryan Howard- .471, 2 HR; Chase Utley- .412, 2 HR; Jimmy Rollins- .250, 2 HR; Shane Victorino- .545 (though it is unlikely he’ll play today as he nurses a bum knee).
Former Phillie, Michael Bourn has been trouble. He is 5-for-13 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. The Phillies need to keep the speedster off the base paths.
Your Gameday Beer – Hop Explosion
The Phils are in dire need of an offensive explosion, so let’s drink to that. Brewed in Bethlehem, Hop Explosion is not too widely available outside of the Lehigh Valley but as the name hints, it’s an IPA. There are some citrus flavors but they’re completely overpowered by the intensely bitter hops. This beer is certainly an acquired taste, but so is curried goat, so have the two together and pray for better meals and games ahead. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

This team is really frustrating losing a four game series to a fourth place team playing under .500 baseball. No offense this weekend. No offense anytime lately. I just do not know what to think about this team anymore.

If the Phillies dont take the series against the worst team in baseball, it is beyond panic time. If we cant take the series against the freaking Nationals, the Phillies will NOT win the division.

The phils are turning into an absolute joke I’m to the point I don’t even wanna watch then anymore…it’s almost like they’ve given up and they just don’t care…you think lidge has to do with because knowing he’s gonna come in and blow it maybe they’ve just given up.

I dont think jt is far off. The Defense does not make plays when lidge is in anymore. It has made me wonder if they give up when Lidge comes in. If the Phillies play like they did this series, the will get swept by the Mets.

An even more annoying part of this. Moyer’s ERA has now dropped below 5. (barely, but still below 5.) He deserved a win today. How can this “team” only score 3 runs against Moehler. How many runs for the 4 game set, 10 runs in 4 games?

Yeah jt; I agree with you. Because of the way they are playing I have not followed them much this weekend. They do not seem motivated. The thing is, even if they win the division by beating inferior teams within their own division for the rest of the month, it does not instill much confidence that they will beat any of the good teams in the playoffs with the way they have been playing.

Im glad the Marlins were playing the Nationals again today or we probably would have been 5.5 games in stead of 6.

IF they make the playoffs, if they dont do something and soon, we will be VERY lucky not to get swept in the playoffs.

Park I suppose is the cheese but werth and utley blew some scoring opps.
Now Ricky Bo’s patented lunkhead analysis – “no heart, played with no emotion, they looked flat …taking the astros too lightly
yadda, yadda, yadda” How about a modicum of fundemental contact hitting..period. I mean pulling the ball down the third baseline twice with runners on third. A strike-out with runner on third (okay there was two outs) but still anything can happen with a ball in play, just ask Luis Costillo. We have great baseball IQs as defenders but put a bat in our hands and its “Flowers For Algeron” time.

I just think that all of lidge blown saves have messef the team up…if dumb cholly would announce lidge no longer closer I think things will turn around.

Charlie will NEVER take Lidge out, PERIOD. What is Milt doing lately for this team?

We love this team, but they have to take each game more seriously. There is no guarantee that anyone can just turn it on in September – and that, of course, includes Lidge. As Herm Edwards famously declared, “You play to win the game!”

Or, more appropriately, “You PLAY to WIN the GAME!”

Charlie Manuel is too easy-going as a manager and is too stubborn and set in his ways. A guy like Larry Bowa is needed in times like these to get on these guys and get them going. Bowa’s managerial qualities are not desirable over the long run in a 162 game schedule and with the egos that these players have today but his intense and fiery leadership would fit in the short term such as now and is what is really needed with the Phils playing such poor uninspired baseball.

Did they look like this last year as well, then turned it on after Schmidtty called them, and Manuel ripped them a new one? Its just about time for that to happen this season.

Chan Ho not the right choice for the Jeltz Award. Utley, Werth or Ruiz should have been selected. Feliz needs to be replaced for a while by Dobbs when he comes back. Can’t win if you do not score runs.

Party like it’s 1964! I really am beginning to get the shakes now. How could we embarrass ourselves more than to have a Mets-like implosion like they’ve done the last two years? We finally got the “choke” label off our backs, only to have it come back again the year after we finally win it all? Someone help!!!!

Eyre has been pitching decent. Stairs needs to go someplace fast…..maybe take lidge with him. Manuel needs to do something to inspire his team to care. I think there is a problem with his never ending support of lidge. 10 games have been blown by lidge…yes, lidge did not pitch today…but that is definately a reminder in each other team member’s mind. The Phillies just look dead….I am prepared to have the season end on 10/4. Not an easy thing to do but they are playing at the level beneath pittsburgh

i’m liking how Ibanez has done his past two games. things are looking good for him. I’d like to see some more stolen bases by the Phillies though to get better chances for RBIs… and we need to improve our RISP.

Yeah j reed; Dobbs is a lefty but what are you going to do since Feliz cannot hit his way out of a paper bag against righty or lefty pitchers. His good defense only carries you so far. Cairo probably does not have the arm/throwing range to play third. Putting in all those left handed hitters to face left handed pitchers never seems to bother Charlie anyway. Have think outside the box on this one and hope that Dobbs can reach lefties for some hits.

Yankee – you’ll only make it to the world series if Boston eliminates Angels….you know Yankee kyrptonite the LAA ANGELS. Nothing like the Halos to run roughshod over your Yankee pride.

mike B. – i was really hoping that they would have aquired a ultility guy like Ben Hall (jamey carroll is who I really hoped for)…I don’t know if they are righty or lefties. Carroll is a right hander I believe. I can understand the closer issue in so far as Lidge contract obligations, and the high demand low supply of closers in general, plus the phillies have to sit in the backseat of the waiver bus…but we just need one frigging utility contact hitter small baller of the bench

j reed; Amaro failed to address the bench issue during last off season and so far this year. They should have never let Geoff Jenkins walk last spring. Hall and Carroll would have both been good acquisitions. It is just a shame that Mayberry Jr. has not developed into a dependable hitter yet. Probably should have kept Chris Coste, at least to the end of the season anyway. How about Nomar Garciaparra? Does anyone think that he will wind up with the Phils later this month?

Mike B. – off of MLB Trade Rumors:
•Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the Phillies are still “mildly following” Nomar Garciaparra. Though Nomar would not be eligible to play in the postseason for Philadelphia, he might provide some depth down the stretch.
With the Lidge’s season long Jeckyl and Hyde routine, the least RAJ could have done is find someone with good contact hitting small ball skills so we could avoid more of these 1 run heartbreakers…Greg Dobbs’ 21 or 22 pinch hits last year were be important, not to mention the effect this must of had on reliever when he stepped out of the dugout. Aint nothing clutch on our bench as of yet… And who’s not gonna give Matt Stairs nothing but off speed garabage to hit after his heroics last year. It’s really mindblogging why the management fails to see the sameness of our line-up…While it is formidable, and explosive, it can be just as predictable because it keeps pitchers honest only when its rolling and not by, other than left/right match-ups, mixing up or readjusting our approaches for each AB. The only one who can really keep a pitcher on his toes at all times is Ut. The entire line-up attacks the ball like power hitters. how can our batters keep pitchers off balance other than with the threat of the long ball which is something pitchers throughout the year have to face when pitching against other good clubs anyway.

Should have acquired Garciaaparra when he was available last spring so they could have had his services for the whole season.
