Philadelphia Phillies (78-58) at Washington Nationals (47-91)

Cliff Lee (12-11, 3.06 ERA) vs. Garrett Mock (3-7, 5.63 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at Nationals Park
Weather: Mostly Cloudy and Windy, 76
TV:Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

It’s a perfect date for baseball: 9/9/09.  Nine innings. Nine men on the field.  Who knows, maybe Miguel Cairo (#9) will come up clutch off the bench.

Cliff Lee would like to get all 27 outs, something he has done twice in a Phillies uniform.  Lee’s first five starts raised his expectations through the roof.  However, he has been roughed up in his last two starts, allowing 12 runs in eight innings.  Lee has a chance to rebound against the NL East bottom-feeders.

Going for the Nationals tonight, will be Garrett Mock.  In five innings in relief, Mock has allowed five earned runs against the Phillies this season.

Last night, Brad Lidge almost blew another save.  Charlie Manuel said that he was going to stick to his closer, but if the Phillies are in another save situation, we may or may not see Lidge.  Todd Zolecki tweets: “Manuel said it’s not 100 percent that Lidge will close in team’s next save situation. Could be anybody. Madson. Myers. Whomever.”

“I’ll just go with how I feel,” Manuel said, regarding who will close.

Note:  12 years ago today, Richie Ashburn passed away.  RIP, Whitey and Harry.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS)/ Victorino (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Ibanez (LF)/ Werth (RF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Bako (C)/ Lee (P).

Ocean Single Hop AmberYour Gameday Beer – Ocean Single Hop Amber
Tonight’s beer is a Swedish take on an American Amber. It is brewed by Oceanbryggeriet, which I assume means Ocean Brewery in the native language. Absent much aroma, the taste is bitter with a roasted malt background and just a touch of coffee/caramel sweetness. Though not an overly complicated beer, it is not well-balanced either. Try it for the sake of trying something new and you might as well have venison with lingonberry sauce for the full effect. – By Brian

The Nats make it look so easy. If they can score in RISP, why can’t we?

Oh c’mon Lee shake it off!

Its amazing that they have no problem scoring with runners in scoring postion. Guzman just kills us. Lee has not looked for a few weeks. I was hoping for a 10-0 win today. I agree with the guys on Daily News Live. Pedro as the 4th starter in the playoffs. Put happ in the pen. Pedro has been there before and knows how to get it done.

Are the Phillies taking notes on how to hit with RISP? Cause they should.

See I am not sure I agree with the guys on DNL, if Happ is healthy, which come playoff time(if we make it) he can go longer than Pedro can. Do you want to start a guy who may hamstring your pen? Just throwing that out there.

Way to go JWerth. A hit with RISP. Who knew?

Well that’s a hit with a RISP… so can we pleeeease drop it now?

No we can not drop it. Not until they do it with some consistency. One hit with RISP is not a trend which is what we want.

As soon as I said Felix would hit straight to the shortstop he got a hit! Let’s go Lee!

hahahahaha…hit for Lee with RISP, if he can do it why can’t J-Roll, or Rino, or anyone who bats consistently.

pretty weak Victorino. pretty friggin weak.

Seriously, if you’ve been watching this team since early 2008 at least, there should be no reason to really worry about that RISP stat.. they wouldn’t shut up about it during the WS broadcast, and hey, we still managed to win.

Glad the bottom of our line up produced while the top of it crapped the bed.

I am happy with 3 but lets face it, we should of had 5 or 6. Nobody out and the bases juiced. Our big hitters are coming up short. 4-0 Marlins.

Glad to see 3 runs in the inning. I saw bases loaded no outs I was sure they wouldnt score at all, but hey, not bad. I still would have liked a few more with bases loaded no outs against the nationals.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

I guess they want to make baby steps. First step is a few doubles, and a single or two to score some. The next step is bases loaded and score with a ground ball out, then maybe sometime soon they can get bases loaded and and actually get a hit. It appears the best way to beat the Phillies is the just Inentionally Walk the bases loaded then pitch normally.

Was listening to the Nats telecast….is the true the Phillies Magic # for the NL East is 20?

At least the Phils didn’t wait until the 5th inning or so to get on the score board… Nats are bad..but the O can put up some as Charlie says”crooked numbers.” So this is actually a good test for Lee…

Yepp after last night’s win 20 is the “magic number”

Lets just hope the Phillies are not done.

I am a little concerned about Lee still. the last 2 outs have been horrible. Was he injured, or tipping pitches?

They’re just getting started…all they have to do is just relax a little and go with the pitch and stop fishing out of the strike zone…the talent is there..the exp is there…the results will soon follow hopefully….Good job Lee…

…and there’s a better chance that Obama’s Health Care forum will make sense…than the Mets coming back tonite……….

WTF, first pitch. Way to help the pitch count there Vic. So Rollins, Utley, Howard and Bako are the only ones without a hit. At least Rollins has an RBI.

Welcome back Raul Ibanez. So Werth up RISP. oh well, 1 run is good enough I guess. LOL. We scored because Howard wasnt in scoring position.

I stand corrected Brian. You are absolutely right.
