Philadelphia Phillies (86-60) at Atlanta Braves (78-69)

Pedro Martinez (5-0, 2.87) vs. Javier Vazquez (13-9, 3.01)

Time: 7:00 p.m at Turner Field in Atlanta
Weather: Rain, 78
TV:MyPHL 17

Ryan Howard’s big night and Kyle Kendrick’s stellar relief appearance each played big roles in the Phillies’ sixth consecutive win.  The magic number stands at eight, as the Phillies close in on their third consecutive National League East crown.

Heavy rain is in the forecast, so that must mean that Pedro Martinez is on the mound.  Lately, he has looked like the Pedro of old.  Martinez is coming off a 130-pitch effort in his eight inning shutout against the New York Mets.  Hoping Mother Nature does not strike, Pedro will try to improve to a perfect 6-0.  Pedro’s last start against the Braves was shortened due to rain.

Martinez will be opposed by Javier Vazquez.  In his last three starts, he is 3-0 and has allowed two runs during that span.  Against the Phillies this season, Vazquez is 1-1 with a 3.81 ERA.  Ryan Howard, who homered twice last night, is batting .364 with two home runs against Vazquez this season.

Tonight’s Lineup: Shane Victorino (gastrointestinal problems) and Carlos Ruiz (sprained wrist) are out of tonight’s lineup.

Rollins (SS), Francisco (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Bako (C), Martinez P.

Kiltlifter
Your Gameday Beer- Kiltlifter
I’m visiting the Phoenix area and just had this delicious beer brewed by the Four Peaks Brewing Company. Kiltlifter, as the name implies (among other things), was developed in the Scottish Ale style, meaning it possesses a dark amber color and is a tad creamier than a traditional ale (but not as creamy as real Scottish ales). My immediate impression likened it to a thick Yuengling in color, texture and flavor – sweet roasted malts, apple/caramel tastes without the bitterness of a hoppy beer. Have it with a chorizo burrito as is the style here in the desert. – By Brian

Brian of CO & j reed – you both had valid points –

other teams were able to pick up an extra relief arm or 2 in august – but not the phils ..

but we stood rube, er – we stood pat.

I agree, Durbin is worth the reciept of the Jeltz, but I was asking because I saw “Durbin for the Jeltz” and Pedro Feliz for the Jeltz” and Werth for the Jeltz”. I dont disagree the poors games, my point was simply, whether he left with injury or not, he ALSO pitched poorly. You cant win them all. Hopefully the offensive onslaught (aka comback) in the 9th will continue tomorrow. Would really like to take 2 out of 3 from the Braves, and 2 out of 3 from the Fish. I sure as HELL hope the offense does better this time around against the freakin Astros. The good thing is, thats at home.

I 100% agree with that question of who are the healthy Pitchers. Slim pickins it seems right now, would could REALLY hurt us. The offense seems to have come around which may do enough to get us through.

holy mackrel – old phillies thinking…and we don’t have to be like that anymore…that’s what really pisses me off.. and if your gonna do the small market approach suddenly then should have been cycling in more guys from the farm, preparing them little by little just incase we need them…look what david price did for the rays last year….the stuff with the obliques…if i screamed told you so all nite long hoping Amaro would hear me, well i probably be hauled away the psych ward and zombied with 30 cc of thorazine

I really regret making fun of the Mets’ injuries. It could be a problem….the offense was dead most of the game but they did try to rally

There is a reason almost the entire Mets team has been injured. Poor conditioning and poor coaching. The Phillies have had a poor year from the Pitching perspective. Overall this years problem has been pitching, but injury, and poor outings. The Phillies as a whole are still pretty much intact, unlike the Mutts.

    OK -

then – i guess we were ill prepared for this wave of injuries… or perhaps – another chicken egg issue… was the bp overused or incorrectly used this yr ?

causing injuries to major players like romero, condrey & eyre

thus causing uc to stretch the starters beyond reasonable so now we have injuries to starters like happ/pedro… which then affects the BP

    AND ON AND ON…

Seeing how the Pitching this year started out VERY poor, then got stronger, just to get hit with the injury bug. I put alot of the pitching problems on Rich Dubee.

Brian of Co. – baseball in general is so far behind in appling modern sports science that they aren’t even at its ass end so poor conditioning is an issue that applies to just about every team to a certain extent. they are alot of injuries on the mets team that are not issue of conditon or coaching. I don’t like them either and their whiny fans but I have never seen anything like it. But basebal is rfe with chronic overuse injuries which are not decreasing with medical improvements and new knowledge about sports physiology. I see signs of change but it is slow and of the things baseball embraces they don’t apply it properly.

Brian of CO- dubee…don’t get me started. But then again 90% percent of pitching coaches need a little work over in the proverbial woodshed….

holy mack – basically yeah we were ill prepared, but this is nothing new for us or any team….bull pens are esp. suspectible….it you know your gonna contend, then throw money at it

holy mack – i could elaborate on this stuff more but would begin at the point when an athlete’s growth plates are fully formed….in a galaxy far far away. The problems i see are so deep that so much would have to change to correct it all that it will need a champion or visionary like billy beane type. So, the issue with did we leave guys out on the mound to long (other than having it cost us the game) is really about staving off what i think for many players is inevitable. its a crapshoot.
