Marlins Philadelphia Phillies (89-64) at Milwaukee Brewers (76-78)

Kyle Kendrick (2-1, 2.70) vs. Braden Looper, RHP (13-7, 5.12)

Time: 7:05 p.m. at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI
Weather: Cloudy, 65 (retractable roof)
TV: CSN
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Pedro can’t go because of a stiff neck, so Kyle Kendrick steps in for a spot start this evening.

Kendrick will make his second start with the Phillies this season, two weeks after shutting down the Mets in the opening game of a double header.  In that game, KK went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs.  In addition, Kendrick has seen action five times out of the bullpen, with four of those being scoreless outings.  He’s been able to locate his pitches and keep hitters off balance, which is an important part of his maturation.  The Phillies need yet another steady performance from him as they try to push that magic number even lower.

Braden Looper will be the starter for the Brewers tonight.  His father, Benny, just happens to be an assistant GM for the Phillies.  The 12-year veteran has seen his fair share of the Phillies during his career, facing the team 60 times with four different teams.  Only three of those 60 have come as a starter, and overall the numbers aren’t pretty.  He’s 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA and has allowed  16 home runs to the Phillies, the most by any opponent.  But as we saw last night with Manny Parra, you shouldn’t put too much stock in the lifetime stats.

Ryan Howard is one Phillie who absolutely owns Looper.  In just six career at bats, The Big Piece has four jacks and five RBI. He’s never struck out against him and has been walked four times. Jimmy Rollins is 9-for-33 lifetime against looper and Chase Utley is 5-for-14.

Odd stat: The Phillies are 32-19 in starts made by Kendrick during his career.  Let’s keep that trend going.

Also, Raul Ibanez is back in the starting lineup after missing the last two games with a stomach virus.

LINEUP: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Feliz 3B, Bako C, Kendrick P

Snow BeerYour Gameday Beer – Snow Beer
Snow Beer is brewed by the communist-sounding China Resources Breweries Limited brewery out of Beijing, China. The style is European Pale Lager which helps make it better than most domestic Chinese beers, including the more popular Tsingtao. Bubbles permeate the light grassy, vegetable taste (ok, Chinese beers are not the best in the world). Have it with some spicy Szechuan cuisine like Kung Pao chicken. – By Brian

Phillies Nation should have a contest to see who can predict the Phillies pitcher who will be on the mound when they clinch.

Not that it matters but Rollins is 8 for 34 against Looper not 9 for 33..I said he was 8 for 37 in the last thread, but I didn’t realize he had 3 BB’s.

Why is Feliz starting tonights game? He’s 1 for 15 against Looper…I guess they need him for defense, since Kendrick is a groundball pitcher. I’d still rather have Dobbs out there, but oh well. Hopefully Feliz can actually break that spell

Dobbs hasn’t played in the field for a while. He must not be able to.

And not that it matters much but Bruntlett hasn’t had a plate appearance since August 25.

Aside from the Lidger whose been your most frustrating Phillie?

am just reminiscing in those days not so long ago Phillies Nation was filled with posts saying how Bako was the worst catcher we could possibly have…

Ibanez was frustrating for me, though he’s coming around. Same problem as Lidge: he used to be so good, and then he got so bad… but then he got good again, so all is forgiven. :D

Probably Chad Durbin, the guys had a tough year mind you the numbers aren’t terrible

@NJ: Well, I stopped badmouthing Bako when he got a mission-critical RBI. I typed here that if he drove Ibanez home, I wouldn’t criticize him again this year, and I’ve stuck with that. :)

Why does a name like B. Looper make me nervous?

NJ – Seriously…no way…mine is Chad Durbin as well…those 2 out 2 strikes struggles are weird to say the least

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that when Bako started playing a role on this team the starting pitching really turned a corner, we may have the best receiving tandem in the game right now.

Bako sets up a good target and I though i love chooch…my only knock is he sets up to early when he wants the ball low and on the outside corner
good to see KK keep his composure

j reed, 2nd most frustrating Phil has been Rollins. It will be amazing if he doesnt end the season with 100 or more runs scored with the offense behind him

Utley only has warning track power these days.

joedad – that’s tartar sauce on chase’s near HR, not your comment.

Well mike lowell has had normal post op pain in his surgically repaired hip…chase could be as well or be suffering to a less degree but enough to compromise his power
