Marlins Philadelphia Phillies (89-64) at Milwaukee Brewers (76-78)

Kyle Kendrick (2-1, 2.70) vs. Braden Looper, RHP (13-7, 5.12)

Time: 7:05 p.m. at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI
Weather: Cloudy, 65 (retractable roof)
TV: CSN
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Pedro can’t go because of a stiff neck, so Kyle Kendrick steps in for a spot start this evening.

Kendrick will make his second start with the Phillies this season, two weeks after shutting down the Mets in the opening game of a double header.  In that game, KK went 7 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs.  In addition, Kendrick has seen action five times out of the bullpen, with four of those being scoreless outings.  He’s been able to locate his pitches and keep hitters off balance, which is an important part of his maturation.  The Phillies need yet another steady performance from him as they try to push that magic number even lower.

Braden Looper will be the starter for the Brewers tonight.  His father, Benny, just happens to be an assistant GM for the Phillies.  The 12-year veteran has seen his fair share of the Phillies during his career, facing the team 60 times with four different teams.  Only three of those 60 have come as a starter, and overall the numbers aren’t pretty.  He’s 3-6 with a 5.10 ERA and has allowed  16 home runs to the Phillies, the most by any opponent.  But as we saw last night with Manny Parra, you shouldn’t put too much stock in the lifetime stats.

Ryan Howard is one Phillie who absolutely owns Looper.  In just six career at bats, The Big Piece has four jacks and five RBI. He’s never struck out against him and has been walked four times. Jimmy Rollins is 9-for-33 lifetime against looper and Chase Utley is 5-for-14.

Odd stat: The Phillies are 32-19 in starts made by Kendrick during his career.  Let’s keep that trend going.

Also, Raul Ibanez is back in the starting lineup after missing the last two games with a stomach virus.

LINEUP: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Feliz 3B, Bako C, Kendrick P

Snow BeerYour Gameday Beer – Snow Beer
Snow Beer is brewed by the communist-sounding China Resources Breweries Limited brewery out of Beijing, China. The style is European Pale Lager which helps make it better than most domestic Chinese beers, including the more popular Tsingtao. Bubbles permeate the light grassy, vegetable taste (ok, Chinese beers are not the best in the world). Have it with some spicy Szechuan cuisine like Kung Pao chicken. – By Brian

The strength of the Phillies team is the offense, batters 1-6.
    5 of those batters tonight? 0 for 20. Wow…

Brewers in the driver seat big time. Nobody on the Phillies is going to hurt them as long as the stay away from Howard. Utley- Auotmatic out. Ibanez ,Werth. AO’s .

    Feliz scares nobody.

this is what happens when people prematurely start talking about the playoff. For weeks everyone was like, the braves are not a threat, they will win the division, we got this, blah, blah, blah….and now look where we are. when all you have to do is win 4 games and you are having trouble doing that, there is a problem.

Okay folks. This team may not even make the postseason and could very well be the 2007 and 2008 Mets in disguise

That answers the question if tyler walker can pitch the 9th inning 07 mets here we come.

I could probably count on one hand how many players are playing like they truly want to win this……

The worst thing is that Pedro said that he was going to not pitch today so that he would be able to pitch in the playoffs. If he truly would have been able to pitch tonight, he should be ashamed of himself. This whole team is full of flaws and problems and I hate to see this happen because I do love most of them……they just are dead. :(*

When we choke, it will not be as bad as 1964 because we won it all last year and you cannot blame Ryan Howard, as he has been carrying this team. Rollins, Victorino, Utley and Ibanez have beed dreadful and the bullpen has flat out stunk. Look for the meltdown, or has it arrived.

Let’s see… 5 game lead with 8 left to play….And we don’t get in… Not even the WC? Stay off the crack folks…Stop being cowards in order to ease the pain by accpt. premature defeat… The Phils lost tonite. Deal with it an move on. They play again tomm….

Ricky B is so on the money. With 8 to play we have the stros and marlins who kick our ass. its getting very scary with 8 to play. he said the phillies are playing with no life. he is so on the money.

Braves play the Nationals tomorrow, then the Marlins and then the Nationals again. The Phils get the Astros and Marlins. Swept by both at one point this season. Somebody better watch the Walt Whitman Bridge. Suicide rate may go up in the city.

Wow. What a bunch of complainers. We lost a couple games like this at the same point of the season last year too. Everyone needs to relax a little. Saying this team is awful is petty and just flat out untrue. A big win tomorrow and you’ll be back on the wagon. This team will clinch early next week – were not the only team going into the playoffs with issues – were still the class of the NL – don’t forget it after one loss.

Phils are LA bound in the first round where they will (rightfully) be underdogs.

if we go 3-5 the rest of the way the braves still have to go 7-1….i don’t care who they are playing, that’s not easy to do….relax everyone..lol

wait the braves have to go 8-0 if we go 3-5

Is this really Phillies fans talking? You have to be imposters or something… What a bunch p*ssies! I guess now you’ll go and watch a tape of Friday’s episode of the View.

He didn’t have a good time of it tonight, but I still would rather have Walker than Lidge as the closer. That could change, however, if we see more of what we saw tonight.
Not all is lost, but this club looks vulnerable now. Charlie has to tell everyone to respect the fundamentals more than ever. It feels almost as though the Braves are ahead of them, and they have to play with enough intensity to counter that feeling.

MP – i agree with you in so far as the team isn’t awful, and i feel good about our chances getting to the post season, but were not the class of the NL…not with the bull pen left out to dry by the upper management

i missed the view yesterday who was on?

if they choke I point the finger at charlie for stinking with lidge and his blown saves for so long and amaro for not getting another arm in the bullpen when they seen lidge has stunk all year…the divison would already be clinched if it wasn’t for all of lidge blown saves.

I dont think its just one loss that has everyone down, its the fact that their bullpen is a mess, injuries have been mounting and just an overall sense that they’re struggling to keep their heads above water…

And if it goes down to 3? And…. We’ll deal with it like men or women. Well at least most of us. The Braves are hot. White hot. 2007 Rockies hot. The N.L. East has been called a joke by some because the Mets stink. They can’t say that now. Can they? We’re still 2 full games up on the Rockies and they’re losing 4-3 in the 7th… That means right now were up a full 7 games on a playoff berth…. It’ll go to 7.5 or down to 6.5 when that games goes final. Relax people…

ray – well there was condrey, eyre , romero and a shaky madson and dubrin was also on the DL for a period of time. Too many variables, and unknowns and with the chance of injury escalating deeper into the season….you tell me…i think we had at least enough mid range prospects to gert someone from the bull pens of non contending teams…look at how the dodgers sured up there back end.

Ricky Bo is off the mark.
It’s not that they have no life

    They are choking.

Braves have life and everybody knows it.

The Phillies have no ace stopper,They have no bullpen and their (way overrated )offense is nonexistent outside of Howard,

I heard the 1927 Yankees lost back to back games near the end of the season.

If we get a healthy Romero and Myers back in the next week, and Park throws his scheduled bullpen session next week, and we go into the postseason with 2 out of the 3 healthy and rested, that would improve the pen immensely – and if Happ goes to the pen too. Seriously, who’s better than us? Franklin isn’t untouchable and neither is Broxton. We have issues but it was just a loss. I don’t think they aren’t hungry to win again. Maybe its some of the fans that aren’t. I don’t think were all watching the same team. And, wouldn’t you rather get hot on the last homestand going into the playoffs?? I just don’t get the whole “were going to choke” mentality. At all. If we can go into the playoffs we some of the previously injured pen guys, along with our offense and defense – then yes we are the class in the NL and we can def get back to the WS. Why wallow when you can believe in your team to go far? Just relax and enjoy it because in a few years time were not going to have a this great team to watch. Be a real Philly fan – some of you have gone completely soft.
