Mets Come Back to Stun the Phillies

Blame Ryan Madson and his sixth blown save of the season. Blame Jamie Moyer and his four, first-inning, earned runs. Blame Brett Myers and his three runs in 0.1 innings. Heck, blame it on the rain, but whomever you decide to point the finger at, the bottom line is the Phillies let one slip away and for the first time in a few weeks, don’t blame the offense.

Before Jamie Moyer recorded his first out, the Mets had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead courtesy of four straight hits, including a two run home run by Carlos Beltran. Moyer held the Mets scoreless after a dismal first, until the seventh. Aside from getting rocked to start the game, Jamie Moyer wasn’t terrible. When he left the ballgame, he left with a lead.

Moyer pitched seven innings surrendering five earned runs. All base-runners reached via hits as Moyer issued no free passes.

The Phillies offense finally came back to life, getting on the board in the second inning on a Pedro Feliz bomb. The Phils took the lead in the third, thanks to home runs by both Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez.

The Phillies continued to pour it on the Mets starter, Mike Pelfrey, scoring once more in the fourth inning and twice in the sixth to finally chase Pelfrey from the game. Overall, Pelfrey allowed eight runs in six innings of work. The Phillies tacked on one more in the seventh, thanks to an RBI single from Ibanez that scored Utley.

Ibanez finished the afternoon 2-5 with three ribbies, and a run scored. Raul contiues to show signs that he is indeed out of his mid-seasonslump, and his re-birth has come just in the nick of time.

The Mets comeback started in the seventh inning when Moyerallowed a run in his last inning on the mound. Brett Myers came in for the eighth.

Myers, since returning from hip surgery has looked solid coming out of the pen. This afternoon however, Myers was unable to shut the Mets down, giving up three runs in only one-third of an inning of work. Those runs allowed the Metsto head into the ninth inning within striking distance of the Phils.

Ryan Madson came in for the Phillies looking to secure his second save in as many days. With a 9-8 lead, Madson went to work getting the first two batters faced to ground out. Fernando Tatis stepped to the plate and laced a single to right-field which set the stage for David Wright, who homered to left, giving the Mets a 10-9 lead. It was Madson’s sixth blown save of the season and the Phillies 16th as a team.

There is plenty of blame to go around for this loss. With the Braves win over the Cardinals, they have moved within seven games of the Phillies. The Marlins are now 5 1/2 back and could be five back by the end of the evening.

A loss like this can play on a weak teams psyche. Let’s hope the Phillies are strong enough to overcome it. They have a chance at double the redemption tomorrow as they play two against the Mets in a day-night double-header. The festivities start at 1 p.m.

This team is a mess. No bullpen. No team can win without a closer. It is pathetic to watch these Phillies struggle against sub par teams like the Mets & Nats.

There is more to managing than just strategy decisions. There’s not a manager alive who hasn’t made innumerable mistakes with bench maneuvers, bullpen maneuvers, and other things. Bobby Cox is considered a great manager, yet I’ve seen him make some bonehead moves when Joe Torre outthought him. I’ve seen Charlie Manuel outthink Joe Torre. LaRussa has used pitchers until he finally puts one in who can’t get the ball over the plate.

Harp all you want about all the left handed batters faced by Myers and Madson. A setup man is not supposed to be a specialist, and the Phils right now are short on lefties anyway, with Eyre and Romero out.

I’ll also point out that in the past couple of weeks, Manuel HAS rested the regulars–when he could. Victorino, Utley, Rollins, and Ruiz have all sat.

Manuel may not be the world’s greatest strategist, but his players respect him, many times his hunches pay off, and at present he has limited resources (a bad bench and a sorry bullpen). It’s time to maybe blame someone besides Manuel. Either that, or it’s time to get behind a struggling team, which hasn’t always struggled, and still has a FIVE GAME LEAD!

Great thing about baseball. We can get ‘em today! Just to go on the record and not stating from hindsight (except for on here), Manager Mr. Phil had Lidge penciled in for the 9th because Madson had just pitched two days in a row and Friday’s save was very Lidge-like.

By the way, I appreciate the writers here who can report the story immediately after a tough loss like yesterday. I don’t watch post game stuff or read anything about the game until I can decompress for a long while. That is definitely a great thing about baseball. You get the chance to get ‘em again the next day. Kendrick is going to pitch with a purpose this afternoon, my prediction.

As much as Lidge has driven us crazy this year, its important to note that Lidge has converted 74% of his saves this year (NOT good….) but Madson has only converted 54% of his saves. 7 out of 13.

I dont want to see either one of them in the 9th. Myers and Park should be the next two guys to get a shot at it.

BTW, I know that I am one of the annoying naysayers out there, but the Phillies situation is too similar to the plight of the Mets the last few years. Good team, bad bullpen. I know, the Phillies have better character….as much as I agree…..it comes down to getting the job done and I dont have faith that that will happen. I hope it does.

This is serious. This team could really blow it and miss the playoffs.

So much blame to go around for last night’s game.

Myers opened the flood gates, and there wasn’t much that Chan Ho or Madson could’ve done. In the bottom of the 8th, Howard (Mr. September) failed to get runners in with the bases loaded… Where did he go? He got 2 singles and then disappeared… These are the moments when you expect him to deliver, take away the momentum from the other team, and carry this team into the playoffs.

The bullpen blew this one, but that specific moment in the bottom of the 8th set our fate for the night.

Any pitcher is destined to have bad innings/outings. Myers is just coming back from hip surgery that was to have ended his season. Not an excuse, but just a reason why he was not 100 percent. However, in the 9th inning Madson came in for the save. As a closer, a 1 run lead is common. He blew it……but to take credit for that should be the Mutts (Mets) players who continue to battle these games out. They do have something to prove and they are trying to prove it. Now, can the Phillies prove that they are still world champions? to be continued…..

    Try Pedro as the closer.
