Myers Progressing Nicely

Brett Myers could find himself in the Phillies bullpen sooner rather than later.  Myers, who is recovering from hip surgery, got the save in a rehab appearance last night.

In two rehab appearances in Double-A Reading, Myers went 0-1, allowing one run in four innings.  He struck out seven.  Last night, he added two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

“It’s good to be able to get out there, obviously,” Myers said. “I haven’t felt anything in the hip for about a month.”

Myers topped 92 mph on the radar gun.  He will pitch again today to see if he can go back-to-back days, the final step before returning.

UPDATE: Myers pitched a 1-2-3 inning on Wednesday night in Lehigh Valley.  He threw 8 pitches: 6 strikes.

It’s amazing how big a motivation impending free agency can be for pro athletes. I hope he’s not rushing back just to improve his market value and doesn’t hurt himself again. If he’s well he could be a huge help in the playoffs.

Jim, in reality, the only motivation on Myer’s mind right now is to join the team in time and be a part of and contribute in the postseason.

It’s amazing how Jim and Bruce are both mind readers and know exactly what Myers is thinking.

It would be perfcetly understandable if Brett Myers wanted badly to rejoin the team and contribute in the post-season because he’s a competitor AND because he wants to increase his market value.

If he pitches well, I wouldnt count the Phillies out to make a nice offer to keep him here.

I don’t know Brian. The phils have a lot of money tied up in the bull pen and we have lee, Blantan, Hamels, Happ, Moyer/Drabek as starters.

It would be very nice if Myers can get himself back into the majors as a versatile reliever capable of being used like Park. Once the seasons over the Phils should let Myers walk because as good as he can be as a late inning reliever or starter the headaches he causes are something the organisation needs to put to bed.
