Minor Moves

The Phillies made some minor transactions today:

  • Paul Hoover was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Hoover on the 40-man roster, catcher Joel Naughton was designated for assignment.

The 33-year-old catcher batted .253 with one home run with the IronPigs.  The move adds another catcher to the September roster.  He played in the majors last season with the Marlins.  He batted .200 (8-for-40), and is a career .230 hitter.  It’s also notable that he does not have a Major League home run.

Naughton batted .240 with 7 HR and 34 RBI in Single-A Clearwater this season.

  • The Phillies activated Antonio Bastardo from the 60-day disabled list.  He was optioned to Double-A Reading.  To make room for Bastardo, Steven Register was designated for assignment.

Bastardo was 2-3 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts with the Phillies.  Register went 1-3 with a 3.20 ERA with the IronPigs.  He pitched one game with the big club this season.

  • Clay Condrey (left oblique strain) is scheduled to make a rehab assignment on Saturday.

Condrey, who has been on the DL since July 23, is 6-2 with a 3.41 ERA this season.

    I’ve heard that he’s like a vaccuum behind the plate… sorry, that’s lame but I couldn’t resist.

    Completely necessary.

I don’t think he was on the 40 man roster, so who left that? Joel Naughton?

We are the Phillies right? Why the hell are we bringing up scrubs like this?

Any idea when Myers will make his return to the big club? I would thing it would be soon given his strong performance in his 5 rehab stints.

Ed, I think it would be by this week. He pitched last night for Lehigh, to see if he could go back to back nights, and he pitched a scoreless inning of relief allowing no hits no walks and striking out one.

Why call up Hoover and designate Naughton for assignment? Couldn’t they have just called up Naughton?

Naughton was on the 40 man roster… they did that in SPT to protect him from Rule 5 status. I don’t think that this move does anything to his status as a Phillie but I could be wrong…

I think that you almost have to add a third catcher down the stretch… they did it with Marson last year… because of the rules surrounding playoff rosters, you have to protect yourself against someone getting hurt down the stretch and since not everyone can play catcher, you have to add a third backstop. I guess that the 33 year-old Hoover is more MLB ready than Naughton.

The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Dodgers, Angels, Marlins and Giants among others added catchers…

A light hitting catcher. He is a perfect fit.

Maybe Hoover can pinch hit a little? anything is better than the production from our current pinch hitters. although he’s really just there as a backup. Great news on Myers.

Hoover was okay in Lehigh Valley especially when he got more starting time following the Cleveland trade that send Marson to the Indians….I don’t see him really getting any playing time though (bako is charlie’s choice for backup catcher regardless of what anyone may think)
