Welcome to the Phillies Nation Podcast!

On today’s podcast, Pat Gallen is joined by Todd Zolecki, Phillies beat writer for Phillies.com.  Pat and Todd dive into the injury news surrounding the bullpen, and they also get into how the final two weeks will play out.  Todd also shares his thoughts on who will be here after next season: Shane Victorino or Jayson Werth.

Zolecki is the Phillies beat writer for MLB.com. Born in Milwaukee, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. He joined The Philadelphia Inquirer in Oct. 1999, and became The Inquirer’s Phillies beat writer in April 2003. The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association & Hall of Fame named him Pennsylvania’s Sportswriter of the Year in 2008. The Associated Press Sports Editors recognized him in 2003 (in the game story category) and 2008 (in a collaborative effort for The Inquirer’s World Series preview.) Zolecki, who joined MLB.com in Feb. 2009, lives in Philadelphia.

Pat- thanks cool to put a voice to the words . Zollecki on Werth and Vic seemed a bit company line, echoing sentiments issued from the Phantom 5 ownership on behalf of his Dark Majesty Selig. My understanding of the payroll economics is that a luxury tax is applied when teams exceed a predetermined amount. In 2010 it’ll be 178 million and were at 113 million now so perhaps we have some room…I don’t know. Nonetheless, I’m feeling that we’re reverting to the old Phillie mentality…granted we can’t go crazy like the Yanks or Sox without more national revenues but I just can’t believe they did nothing to sure up the BP esp. with the abuse it endured earlier in the season . And i don’t mean the closer issue…they don’t grow on trees and we are the low man on the waiver-line totem pole. I would just hate to see a short lived post season because of we came down “red headed stepchild” syndrome again or refused to let go of some mid-level prospects.

J Reed: Thanks, and hope you keep listening.

As for Zolecki, I think he was pretty frank in everything he said. It’s impossible to know what will happen in 12 months let alone 12 days, so he covered his bases there.

In the end, it’s still a business and the Phillies are spending a lot of money. But you cant blame the owners for wanting to maximize profits after enduring countless losing seasons. So the hard line stance on a certain number is fine with me. They’ve spent plenty in my eyes. Another reliever or some more help elswhere would have been nice, but if this team was completely healthy, we wouldnt have much to complain about.
