Destiny is in their hands. For a third straight season, the Philadelphia Phillies have the opportunity to wear the crown of the NL East. Savor it.

They sit on the doorstep, with five games remaining before the end of the season. Stranger things have happened, but after a demoralizing Braves loss, coupled with a Rockies win, the Wild Card picture is becoming clearer. How will the Braves respond? It matters very little to the Phils.

The Phillies have business to take care of tonight, in front of the home crowd. A victory in front of the sea of rally towels puts them back in the postseason, preparing for yet another storied run to the Fall Classic. You can throw everything else out – all parallel storylines like Marlins/Braves – and focus on the Phillies, and only the Phillies, tonight.

Just 48 hours ago, the panic switch had been flipped and the NL East was no longer a definite. But when their backs were inching closer to the wall, they pulled through. It was indeed a trying week for our boys in pinstripes; complete with agonizing late-inning circus acts, mounting injuries, and talk of an epic collapse witnessed only by our elders in ’64. Finally, that can all be put to rest.

With a win tonight, we can also put the players to rest. Undoubtedly, the marathon that is the MLB season as worn on this team of all-out players. Chase Utley’s average is below .290, a dark hole for the second baseman compared to the bright shine of .300. Jayson Werth is caught in a slump, and Raul Ibanez may or may not be feeling the lingering effects of a mid-season injury.

The list of names battling the bug in the bullpen is vast. Add Moyer to the grouping of Eyre, Myers, Romero, Park, Condrey, and Taschner, plus Happ and Pedro in the rotation. Some of them have made their way back, and some have not. Rest for the weary is just around bend.

How perfect would it be to get the slumping order some R & R? It’s important to have everyone healthy and ready to rock for the second season, so a victory tonight makes that possible.

Rest easy, Phillies Nation. Just one more win and it’s a done deal. Time certainly flies when your having fun, and this season is nearly over in the blink of an eye. So enjoy tonight’s festivities, and then prepare yourself for the back-to-back chase.

By the way the Brave aint losing another game. They are about to win their 15th game out of the last 17, and have the Nationals in their final series. We of course have the Marlins whom knocked out the collapsing Mets of 2007-2008

OK guys no matter what happens tonight or in the playoffs let’s not overreact. We would like to see more of the positives like this from joedad even though we while we were getting blown out

Ray, nice job scouring the archives. People were about to jump off the bridge, but thankfully they stepped down. One to go.

Nice post Pat. Totally agree, they can only stop themelves.

September 30. Date seem familiar? It’s also the day the Phillies clinched in 2007. “Myers, the sign to Chris Coste.” Pretty ironic how the Phillies could clinch today with Coste on the other side of the dugout.

Harry and Whitey are looking down smiling right now.

Would have loved to hear how Harry would have called this season. This one is for you HK.

“You’ve got to be tough, and you’ve got to be mentally tough. I think that’s one thing in common I’ve got with Philadelphia. They always say how mentally tough, or how tough they are, how rough they are? I belong here, then. Because I’ve been tough, and ever since I’ve been in baseball, I’ve been a fighter, and I come to whip your [butt] every day. If I can beat you 100-0 I will everyday.”

    -Charlie Manuel

    Love it!!!!!!

I sure hope so, Manny. Just got a call at work from my dad (around 4 PM EST) telling me that he got 2 tickets for tonights game. He’ll be meeting me in center city (where I work) and then taking me over to the game. Let’s clinch this, boys.

Tonight we again get to sip the champagne and rest the weary. Way to go boys! Thinking back on everything that has transpired this season it is amazing they are standing at the doorstep today. To (mis)quote the late Harry “Carlie Manuel, you are the man”.

Amanda, what are you referencing to in your post, “Myers, the sign to Chris Coste”? I am lost on that one.

Let’s win the Division tonight. I will be brown capping as usual. I am known as THE RUNT. But I am a huge Phillies fan. Incidentally, Mitch Williams was excellent today on the Jim Rome Show — ROME IS BURNING.

Excellent research and well written…by Ray, lol. I like to stay positive because my first baseball memories were of the Phillies winnning it all in 1980 and even the negative Phils fans were positive.

Let’s hope tonight’s the night so we can party like its 12-12-12
