2009 World Series: Yankees vs. Phillies

The Phillies quest for back-to-back World Championships will now go through the Big Apple.

The New York Yankees disposed of the Los Angeles Angels in a hard-fought six games, and will now face the Phils starting Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Game 6 was won by Andy Pettitte, who now has the most postseason victories in the history of the game (16). In addition to the fine job done by Pettitte, the Yankees offense as a whole has been clicking on all cylinders, much like the Phillies.

Alex Rodriguez is hitting a ridiculous .438 in the playoffs to this point, launching five homers to go with 12 RBI. On the other hand, slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira has struggled, hitting just .203 through the first two rounds.

For Game 1, it will be C.C. Sabathia for the Yankees going against Cliff Lee, two ex-teammates and Cy Young Winners going against each other to open the Fall Classic.

Phillies fans wanted the Yankees, and the Phillies will have to beat the best team in baseball this year; one that has 110 victories so far this season. Other than their 110 wins this season, the Yankees hold 26 World Series titles and have now won 40 AL Pennants.

Phillies. Yankees. Doesn’t get any better than this.

I really really like the Phillies chances. I bet not 5 % of the media will choose the Phillies. I love it.
The key is getting to Sabathia game 1. Then the other starters are not up to par. also please use that Joba every game. We should have some fun with him.

Call me crazy. But I just can’t see the Phillies losing this series. We will not play all tight and make numerous base running blunders like the Twins and Angels did.

The Angels really gave them this series, man did they play like shit and it still went 6. We should have swept the Yanks earlier this year so I like our chances and that short porch in right.

Sorry Leon, I forgot you were there. Thanks for the support. And you guys had a great season that just happened to end a little earlier than you would’ve liked.

Harry, no sweat man. Angels did not play there usual game this series. Yankees were given given too many opportunities on errors made by the Angels. As Jeff stated, the Skanks still had to go six games to win it. Your team looks solid. Here is hoping you all smack the smug of their faces.

question…I found it odd they did not present the trophy on the field. Did you? Guess they don’t have that much regard for their fans…..UNLIKE the Phillies!

Did anyone else notice Jeter’s post-game comment when the tv guy mentioned 2000 and the failures since – “way to focus on the negatives.”

Hey Capt Clutch – our guys got hit last year w/questions on Joe Carter in 93 and 10K losses. They weren’t around for nearly all that.

Jeter was on the field for all of the following:
    Blew a 3-0 lead in 04.
    No WS app since 03
    No WS win since 00.
All done w/highest payroll in the game.

Nice flip back in 01 against the A’s though. (BTW – you lost in the WS that year too).
It will be nice to take some more glitter off this guy.

    Go Phils!

Nah, they’re just trying to one up the Phils on game ship. It’s cool. Because we just might clinch the WS on their field anyway. Then the fans will really get to see the “real” trophy presented. The Yanks are about as phony as A-Rod’s bouquette HR celebration. And we know he’s taken very kindly to Jeter’s rear end.

Hey….just wanted to say congrats to the Phillies on getting to the WS again to defend their championship. As a life long Yankee fan I also want to say how much I respect your team, the Phillies. Great team and tough. I thoroughly enjoyed the last few years watching the Phillies stick it to the mutts…a team I have almost no respect for. Obviously I think the Yankees will pull it out and win #27 but if they do they will surely earn it. Just one thing….are you guys pitching Pedro in the Series? We’ve done pretty well against him over the years (remember….the Yankees are my daddy:) and I know Charlie remembers! Anyway…good luck. I hope it’s a great series.

Hey everyone, google searched for a Phillies blog after the Yankees win to get a feel of the fanbase right now. You are all very delusional right now. Yes, the Phillies are defending champs but if you think that this is going to be easy then you don’t really know what your talking about. It will be a great series, one that will probably go 7, but the Yankees will be clear, and rightful, favorites. Beating this Yankees team in a 7 game series with CC pitching the way he is for 3 out of the 7 is a tall task that you all seem to be overlooking. This isn’t even mentioning the Yankees superior bullpen AND lineup. Don’t get me wrong the Phillies are a great team, but get your heads out of the clouds and look at things objectively…and love the “salary” crutch that already seems to be in full bloom.

“This isn’t even mentioning the Yankees superior bullpen AND lineup.” Hugh Stacks are you on drugs? Do you honestly think the Yankees have a superior line up? If so, you have to check your baseball knowledge. This Phillies line up is stacked top to bottom not to mention the majority of them are extremely hot right now. Yes I know A-rod is on fire but what about the other hitters in your line up. Tex is slumping and the runners you have left on base in the Angels series was embarrassing. Good Luck but I completely disagree with your comments.

The season statistics speak for themselves. Players fluctuate from series to series so when comparing offenses leave small sample size slumps aside. These two teams were the first and second best offenses the entire year, but one team was a notch above almost across the board and it only takes an easy visit to any number of websites to figure out why.

Hugh, the Yankees are my AL team (fans united to hate the Mets and bosox). They were not firing on all cylinders this series. The superior bullpen had a couple meltdowns, the hitting wasn’t there, etc. On the other hand, the Phillies seem like they are playing better and better every post season game.

The Phils won’t error like the Angels, our lineup will hit better then the Angels. If our Pen holds up its end of the deal, the Phils are a machine.

Also, I present you with the results of Interleague play, when our pitching roster was a wreck. Games were close, but it was almost a sweep. Now I have no expectations of that, but the Phils can take this team, no problem.

key to phils win is two words: “score first” last year they scored more runs in the first inning (6) in the world series than any other inning with the second most runs scored in the 8th inning (5).

As a Phils fan I haie to say it, but we will be solid underdogs in this series.

Having to possibly face CC 3 times is not going to be easy. Unlike last year, there will be no J.P. Howell or Dan Wheeler in the back of the pen-just the greateast reliever of all-time.

The Yankeeas lineup is just as good, if not better, than ours. We have major advantages in RF and 2B, but Chase isn’t himself right now. The Yanks have an advantage at SS, C and a HUGE one at 3B.

Phils can win this series, but they will need to play extremely well and that’s asking a lot after a 6 day layoff.

Sorry to be a downer. Go Phils!!!

Straight up disgusted Mets fan…..NL for life. Got 100x more hatred running through my blood for the Yanks. The one time of year I can say this….Phillies….take them Yanks to the f*ckin woodshed.

    Griffin,
The Yanks do NOT have an edge at SS!!!

Jeter is a great player, and maybe you give him a slight edge over J-Roll at the plate.

But Rollins is 10 times the fielder. Jeter has nowhere near the range or arm strength that Jimmy does. He simply can’t make the same plays in the field as Rollins (as we saw in the WBC) and that makes a huge difference at short.

Phils have the clear edge in LF (Raul over Damon), CF (VIctorino over Melky, though barely), SS (see above), 2B (obvious) and RF (Werth over Swisher).

I’ll call 1B a toss up (and that’s only because Texeria is so good defensively). Catcher is close too (Molina can’t hit, and Posada ain’t great defensively).

The yankees only clear cut edge is at 3B.

How the Phillies do against Sabathia and how well they can control A-Rod and Jeter will be key in this World Series. I have no doubt that they will control the Yankee’s $60 million dollar first baseman as they have faced him numerous times in the NL.

I find it hilarious how people keep pointing to CC as trouble for Philly. Same reason the media said the Brewers would win the NLDS last year.

Ask Shane Victorino how that worked out.

I look for the Phillies to run in this series against Posada. I guess the Spankees could start Molina at catcher in NY, but they will have to start Posada in Philly. Phillies in 6!

Gonna be tough but fans of both sides need to remember this:

The Yankees have to go through the DEFENDING CHAMPION Phillies, not vice versa.

CC 2-3 times will not be fun but if they can work counts in their favor he is hittable. It would also be nice to not have to deal with Marino Rivera, trailing in the 9th.

Their lineup is pretty much our equal as a whole, the back of their pen is better.

This is probably as equal as can be. My key to this series is 2 words Cole Hamels. We need if not the dominating Cole, a Cole who will give us a 3 run, 7 inning performance. We need an insurance ace to throw out there against that team.

Should be fun, lets get that parade once again.

Here’s my take on the matchups. Infield first.

1B….Slight edge Phillies. Don’t know enough about Howard’s defense but I do know what a great hitter he is, so with that in mind I give a slight edge to Howard over Tex. Tex’s defense is something to behold and has saved the Yankees on defense alone and when he gets going he can go on a tear.

2B… Slight edge Phillies. .Again don’t know enough about Utley’s defense. Cano plays excellent defense but again I will give Utley a slight edge because of his offensive capabilities.

SS…Edge Yankees. Rollins is a good player but Jeter has had a great year with the bat and defensively. You may not like him because he is the face of the Yankees but he’s going to the HOF and he is a great postseason player.

    3B…Obvious edge to Yankees. Arod.

So to me the Phillies get the right side of the infield and the Yankees the left side.

    more to come :)

Forgot to include catcher with the infield.

C….Slight edge Yankees. Tough one because I know Ruiz’s stats don’t tell the whole story. Every time I watched the Phillies it seemed like he was getting big hits. I will give a slight edge to the combination of Posada and Molina although I’m sure Phillies fans will give a good argument. Posada is a great hitter and it bugs me that he will be on the bench when Burnett pitches but he is not a good defensive catcher. But he can throw better than he is given credit for…28% CS. Both teams shouldn’t assume they can run at will on the other. Does Bako play in the late innings? He has the highest CS % of all the catchers at 32%.

    Outfield

LF….Maybe slight edge to Phillies. Damon and Ibanez are two good hitters and both not known for their defense. Could be even but slight edge to Ibanez for his pop.

CF…Edge Phillies. Victorino is one of my favorite non Yankee players. Watch out when his contract is up Philly fans :) Cabrera is a poor man’s version of Victorino. He is only 24 and may get there but right now edge definitely to Victorino.

RF…Even….Again I know Werth is a good hitter with pop but don’t know of his fielding. If he is a great fielder with an arm then edge to the Phillies. Swish is an average fielder but makes all the plays and actually saved a few runs with his defense in both playoff series so far. Good thing because he was horrible at the plate in the ALCS. But he has had a good year at the plate with a .869 OPS so I will call it even.

note…With the Yanks leading their defense improves when Gardner goes to CF and Cabrera goes to left in the late innings.

I like the Phils’ chances a lot. They will not play like the Bad News Bears, which is how Angels played much of the time against the Yanks. And it still went 6 games, as others have mentioned.

Do you guys think the rest will be a factor for us. To much….I think it helps the bullpen. What concerns me is we were hitting. Yankees will come right in off of there series. It might help Utley and Ibanez. I would hit Ibanez as the DH and use Fran in left. Agree?

Phillies in 5 or 6 Phillies pen is rested and Lee and Hamels and co have rest.

  • Posts: 0 Jeff of Nova

JM, The Phillies are one of the best all around defensive teams in baseball. Werth is a great fielder with a rocket for an arm. I agree with Jeter over Rollins ONLY because of the bat. Rollins is a much better fielder than Jeter. Howard’s defense has been much improved this year. Ruiz is head’s and tails above whatever the Yankees throw out there.

I mean if you are going to post edge’s do the research, instead of “don’t know enough about their defense” garbage.

Anyhow this series will be interesting, I feel it is evenly matched, but the Phillies are the better all around team, the focus is on team. The Yankees are a good collection of high priced talent or hasbeen talent.

JM good thing you are making anologies of the two teams when you start every Phillie player saying I don’t know how he is in the field. One Werth is a far better defender then Swisher, better arm better range just better, and he is better at the plate, I live in Vermont and have to deal with a lot of Yankee coverage, The Phillies have a huge advantage in the outfield defensivly and offensivly. And with exception of closer, even if Lidge pitches like he has of late, Mariano is better, but middle and long releif the Phillies have a slight edge.
Ruiz also is a far advatantage for the phillies defensivly over either of the guys the yankees will put out there. And stats aside Ruiz has proven over the last two years to be clutch at the plate. So I think the phillies have a advantage there. I am not a big A-Rod fan and I think the pressure will eventually get to him, especially if he starts off slow. But you have to give NY a big advantage at 3rd. SS is even, Rollins range and arm, Jeter at the plate. Second base with Chase having a week to rest, has to go to the Phillies. And dispite his struggles at the plate Tex’s defense is huge for this yankee’s team. Which ;makes up for a lot of defense lacking in their infield. So I call first base even. Starting pitching the Yankee’s have 2 1/2 really AJ? The Phillies have 5 and will be available to start any given game. Edge Phillies.
I think it will be a great series, feeling is Phillies in 5 or 6. A split in NY in the first 2 games is huge.

Having said all that, and by no means am I saying I am just happy to make it back to the WS. Yet win or lose this WS they have defended their title with heart and determination. And I would hope even if they have a bad game, that it does not get writen how someone is bad and has to be gone next year.
This is a great team. I have a feeling they will repeat, and it will really suck if they do not now. But I can live with how this team carries itself and I know it is over used, but play the game right.
Looking forward to some great baseball
    GO PHILLIES

Jeff…research works both ways. Do you know anything about the Yankees defense? Phillies fielding percentage is .987 and the Yankees is .985

Tex, Jeter and Cano are possible Gold Glove winners. I’ll give you Ruiz as better defensively but his CS % is 1 point below Posada’s and equal to Molina. And Posada’s .880 OPS is .100 better than Ruiz. Obviously when you make comments like heads and tail better your throwing garbage too.

Yeah….Jeter, Mo, Posada and Pettitte all hasbeen to 6 WS and going to their 7th.

It should be a great series. Both are good teams regardless of what they get paid.

They’ve been getting key hits from guys like Damon (batting 2nd). and Melky Cabrera (batting 9th)

much as we’ve had Victorino, and Ruiz stepping up for us..

Before we all start complaining about getting no respect etc.. Let’s just take this for what it is.. we’re playing the greatest franchise in sports history, with them coming off an amazing regular season . they will obviously be favored in the World Series (probably in 6 games?) .. Lets not let that bother us

    Go Phillies!!!
