Martinez’s Dominance Not Enough as Phils Fall 2-1; Series Tied

Through the first five games of this second season, manager Charlie Manuel has found himself in positions where his decisions weighed heavily on the outcome of the game. So far, Manuel had pushed all of the right buttons, placing his talented ball-club in a position to succeed. This afternoon, however, Manuel may have out-thought and out-managed himself.

Pedro Martinez, who was making his first postseason appearance since the World Series in 2004 for Boston, pitched a gem through seven innings. With the exception of two hits throughout, Martinez had the Dodgers line-up on their heels all afternoon. He wasn’t overpowering, as he struck out just three, but he was certainly efficient, walking none. Over the seven frames, Martinez threw just 87 pitches, forcing pop-ups and ground-outs the whole time.

Martinez’s doppelganger, former Phillie Vincente Padilla rode his floatilla straight through 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on a mistake to Ryan Howard, which the big man deposited in the left-field seats. Despite the solo shot from Howard, Padilla cruised, striking out six, walking only one. Padilla held the Phils to just four hits and the offense was completely mystified by the journeyman pitcher.

When the bottom half of the eighth arrived, Martinez’s spot in the batting order was due up third. When Carlos Ruiz walked with one out, Charlie Manuel decided to take a gamble hoping to hit the big-inning jackpot. Unfortunately, the gamble required Martinez to be removed from the game after throwing just 87 pitches. The gamble didn’t pay-off as the Phillies failed to put a run on the board. The game was then placed in the shaky hands of the bullpen. The snowball effect wasn’t pretty.

Chan Ho Park entered the game and surrendered a lead-off single to Casey Blake. The next batter, Ronnie Belliard singled on a seeing-eye bunt that put runners at first and second with no outs. A double-play ball was needed and Park got one off the bat of Russell Martin, however, two mistakes were made on the play. First, Pedro Feliz, who fielded the ball had the opportunity to tag out the lead-runner moving to third(pinch-runner Juan Pierre), but opted for the conventional double-play. After getting Belliard at second, the second mistake was made as Chase Utley, for the second straight day, air-mailed the relay to first, allowing the tying run to cross the plate.

Four Dodger batters and three Phillies relievers later and rookie J.A. Happ walked Andre Ethier on a 3-2 count, with the bases juiced to give the Dodgers the 2-1 lead. It was a good at-bat from Ethier who was able to lay off a close, but low ball four from Happ.

It was all the Dodgers would need as they sent closer Jonathan Broxton to the mound to finish off the Phillies in a 1-2-3 ninth inning, getting Chase Utley to fly-out to end the game.

Both teams will get a chance to breathe as the series moves to Philadelphia for three games, starting Sunday. The two teams stand tied at a game a piece.

What a waste. No reason you take pedro out and why can’t we turn a double play. This goes from an easy series to a very stressfull one.

that game was ours for the taking. cant believe utley rushed that throw. still wouldnt of been out of the inning put that was the biggest play of the game today. Where was padilla’s stuff when he was with the phillies? dude was probably so drunk he doesnt remember pitching today lol. tough lose but its time to move on. 1-1 going back to philly for 3. we can end this shit game 5. Cliff on sunday is looking good so no need to freak out to much

Justin, you’re right, would not have been out of the inning, but, it would have been either 1 out and 1st and 2nd or two outs with a runner on third. That was a brutal mistake from Utley. He needs to settle down some, I think.

Hey we fall down, we stand up again. We blew up, we have to make a full recovery. Take the postives. 1-1 series heading back to Philly for 3 straight games. We can end it in Philly with our fans and I’m banking on it. I go with Cliff Lee for game 3, Joe Blanton for game 4 and Cole Hamels for game 5. Kuroda and Wolf face us in game 3 and 4 (Sunday and Monday). And honestly the Dodgers haven’t beaten us yet. The only loss was when we beat ourselves today. We have the home field advantage. Rollins needs to get his engine going and as rollins goes, so do the phillies. Utley needs to get back in form and get redemption. Werth had a terrible game today, he needs to have a better outing. And feliz needs to be patient and get good AB’s. Let’s start swinging those philly towels and make noise. I’m sure we can make way better noise than LA fans and sell out the stadium (unlike the dodgers). I know it’s a disappointing loss guys, but no one is perfect (except for 08 Lidge). These 09 phillies are team that is gonna give u a heart attack and get you on the edge your seat, but in the end they will get the job done like they will in this series. Go Phillies!!!

Utley was throwing high all game. On at least two routine grounders, he nearly overthrew Howard, who had to reach high to get the throw. I wonder if the error in Game 1 hasn’t gotten in his head.

Seen that happen — infielders get some kind of mental block on their throws.

That was a routine double play. With Martin running, it’s a pretty easy turn. Clearly the key play of the game.

You can’t blame Charlie for taking out Pedro. The guy hadn’t pitched in a month. He was on a pitch count limit of 90-100 and had thrown 87 on a hot afternoon.

Plus Ethier hit a warning track shot off him to end the 7th. Pitch hitting for Pedro to get another run was clearly the right call. Didin’t work out in hindsight. But it was clearly the right baseball decision.

Utley and the bullpen blew this game.

You can’t blame Charlie for taking Pedro out of the game after 7 full innings… you basically had to do it. You have to think that Eyre/Madson/Lidge/Happ/Durbin/etc are capable of getting the last 6 outs. We lost the game thanks to Utley’s throw. That was the turning point.

it was never going to be an easy series… the dodgers didn’t get here by accident, they can pull out games in the end just like the phils can. They found a way today, even if the phils did play their way into a loss. tip your cap, move on… think 6 or 7 games for this one, was always gonna be that way.

It is nice to see the positive posts, a split in LA is what you could hope for and we got it. Could they have won this game yes, but mentally it does not hurt that much.
Despite Chase’s error this offense should be able to score more runs, but oh well we move on.
And not to be critical of Charlie, I have backed the guy all year, and do not blame him at all, but I do think he tried a little too hard for match ups in the eighth, he usually does not make one batter changes, but like the original posts says he has made all the right moves, even though I think he over managed a little, he still had the guy out there he wanted in Happ. Driving from Vermont Saturday for games 3 and 4 would like to see two wins, but I think 2 out of 3 still gets us back to the WS.
And agree the Dodgers are good so you tip your cap and take them down on Sunday.
See you all there good night

Is Utley hurt? He’s been having trouble throwing all series. If told me we would be 1-1 going to Philly, would have been happy

Oh I do have to own up to not thinking Pedro was going to be any good when they signed him. He has been outstanding and I was soooooo wrong about him. So I wanted to eat my crow and say I am sorry Pedro you proved to still be able to dominate at this level and I am glad you are a Phillie. Hope you have a chance to dominate in the WS.

I agree the Dodgers got here but they suck. Manny is off the roid, kemp and loney can easly be pitched too. Charlie out managed himself. Utley with a bad play. No reason we cant beat this poor excuse for a ball team. They are coming to the cold and we will kill them

I know our bullpen is a mess so I’m not shocked we couldn’t hold a 1 run lean after Pedro left, but WTF is with Utley?? The guy occasionaly makes mistakes, but this is crazy! I’m afraid something is wrong. He is no slacker, so why the screw-ups on two routine double plays? We can’t win this series making these kind of defensive errors. Even with the split I need someone to talk me down. I’m freakin out here.

CT Dave, I’ve been saying it for over a month. Utley’s hip must be tight. How many balls has he turned on and pulled. Look at his average and power since August. He can play……but something is wrong. Chase is too good for two similar errors in 2 games!

Chase was fantastic in the NLDS…so I don’t think he’s injured… but who knows??? We’ll probably find out after the postseason is over.

    Good!

Now baseball fans (and especially MLB brass) can still hope for a REAL exciting World Series, unlike last year’s droll low-ratings record-setting performance between Philadelphia and the Godamn Devil Rays.

Seriously, is there a less-worthy and more boring team than Philly?

Everything about that Godforsaken wasteleand sucks. Abandoned buildings. Political corruption. Abject poverty. New Jersey across the river.

Please God – I have one prayer. Don’t let this dull club from this drab city make it again. Last year was a joke; we get it.

    Please. Don’t let Philadelhia win.

    Go LA!

hate to panic – BUT this game could come back to haunt us!! – baseballs a funny game that way – it gets played on the field, not over the blogs, and anything can happen! – one MUST capitalize on all one’s opportunities especially in the playoffs – martinez was pitching an absolute masterpiece, a game for the ages by an unbelievably gutsy competitor, totally controlling the dodgers, no sign of a break, and had only thrown 87 pitches! – shit last month uc let martinez go 130 pitches or so in another gem! – and Martinez of course rose to the occasion in that one! – for thats what heros do – thats what triple cy young winners who fight so hard to come back for an opportunity like this at 37 do!! – u just cant remove a guy like this performing this way under those circumstances – u have to let destiny and the moment play itself out!! – and i think it would have – to that point there was certainly no reason to think otherwise!! – PLUS u have to keep ur foot on the dodgers throat – 2 wins heading back to philly basically ends the series right there and were only 2 innings away from that! – now were in a dog fight!! – intstinct should have told uc this – this was not the time for uc to get “smart” and all of a sudden go by the book!!! – i dont get it – did charlie all of a sudden give up on the intuition and feel that have taken him so far over the past 3/4 years?? – i know i/ should feel ok that we’re heading home 1-1, and i do love this team, but i cant help but be disappointed as a devoted/passionate fan!!

So, the Dodgers lucked out a gift win. They’re a bunch of overated panty waists. Come on over to the east coast, girls, where REAL BASEBALL is played and it’s not 80 degrees. Result: just like last year, it’s over in 5. Phils sweep three at home. Bring on the Yankees.

Alright boys. I never come onto this site until now. I will tell you how it is. Pedro is the best pitcher I have seen in my lifetime. Im 37 years old. I dont care about roids clemons or the unit. Pedro is the most dominant pitcher in my lifetime. Tonight he was dealing big time. He just got manny out in the 7th and was cruising. He threw 87 pitches. You must put him back out in the 8th with the worst bullpen in baseball. madson is been bad. they did not touch pedro in this game. he was pumped to be out there. big mistake my charlie who makes them all the time. he had no problem leaving out there against a AAA team for 137 pitches. Pedro was fresh today and I would of rode him. Yes I know its 1-1 now but after last night you were either coming back 2-0 or 1-1 and it should of been 2-0/ BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. BIG TIME. Thanks boys and good luck the rest of the way.

Dodger Blue……I love your ignorance. I bet most of America would rather see the Phillies. Other then the “glitz” of LA, your team is boring. Most fans that don’t root for the Phillies, think we are more exciting. MLB thinks it will get bigger ratings with a Yanks / Dodgers WS. However, just look at the ticket prices on Stubhub…….that is where you can see real supply and demand in the open market. I could have been in Dodger Stadium today for $25…..no such luck in Philly!!! Sure, you have more seats then Citizen’s Bank Park, but you also have twice the population. You aren’t legit sports fans. Why isn’t there an NFL Team there……..and you can have KOBE…….he is a fake Philadelphian…….I’ll take the Fresh Prince of Bel Air anyday!

Dodger Blue……you have a pretty big mouth for losing 4games to one against us last year…….and already losing Home Field advantage this year……..3 out of 5 are at our place………I’ll take Cliff Lee over Randy Wolf…..anyday. I can’t wait to see Kershaw again!

Okay, so I’m not the only one who thinks we were insane for not keeping Pedro in the 8th. The man was brilliant. Game won in that case for sure. Wouldn’t have had the sad opportunity for another Chase error (?!) or the horror that is our bullpen.

Let’s not re-invent history here. Manual screwed up big time tonight….he said he “arbitrarily” set a pitch count for Pedro of 75-85 pitches before the game. Why? This is a Hall of Famer..(Manual is a small footnote in baseball lore)…let the game dictate how you manage!

A pro like Bob Gibson would have strangled Manual for such a dumb manuever…Pedro is too nice a guy. I’m not…Manual doesn’t make the Phillies…they made him! I think he’s a freakin’ idiot. They lose this series…it’s on his back!

One manager in recent times was fired for leaving Pedro “in”….let’s fire this guy for taking him “out”!

(Total disrespect for a Hall of Famer!)

I can tell you right now that a 40 yr old Pedro Martinez pitching into a pitch count well into the 90s and 100s on his first start in 3 weeks is in no way going to be effective as Chan Ho Park pitching nasty mid 90s heat.

Despite the series being 1-1, I sure as hell like our chances. We’ve made some mental mistakes in the field, but those can be corrected. We went into a hostile environment and took one (even though we should have taken two). We now have three home games in cold weather where we will have the advantage over LA. I’m not worried. The Rockies actually looked tougher than LA and look what happened to them. Ladies and gentlemen, please relax. We are in a great position.

Back to Utley…..the Phillies knew he has been hurt too. Why do you think both Cairo and Bruntlett are both on our playoff roster?

well hillbilly….nice decision: pedro is pitching a gem, nothing wrong with him and you say ” i know your pitching lights out, pedro, but i’m going to take my chances with my shaky bullpen, sorry dude”. 31 out of 32 managers will leave pedro in for at least one more inning knowing how ify the bullpen is. Then you bring in your closer. I say pedro mows ‘em down in the eigth and most likely the ninth and he already pitched a complete game previously. Hillbilly is so predictable. Dodgers feared that hillbilly would leave pedro in, then applauded and licked their chops when he was taken out. How do you take a guy out who is pitching a shutout? Anyway, unfortunatley padilla was lights out and if the phils made their opportunities, they should have bunted and stole bases and force the dodgers to make errors. Utley is another headline: he has to shake it off and practice the hell out of double plays in practice.
Also, i would not put hamels in again this series. he is awful whether it’s regular season and now we know, the playoffs. he’s just terrible and a liability. Lee, Blanton, Happ, pedro.

if the redneck hick manuel went back in time to do this game over, knowing what he knows now, he would do exactly the same think – stupid stubborn old man. what a bs excuse for pulling pedro at the press conference. how can you be so immoveable as to say that he was going to pull him at 7 innings anyway regardless of the situation. he did just that: situation was that pedro was 2 hits removed from a PERFECT GAME and the hillbilly pulled him.
Can you imagine what the phillies could do with a half decent, out of the box thinking, younger manager Can you spell DYNASTY

Ask the Dodgers: Casey Blake said he was “relieved to not see Pedro” when he was leading off in the bottom of the 8th.

The baseball gods were offended….the LCS has been altered in a fashion that may not be righted. Charlie need to go to the altar and ask for forgiveness!

Wait…LA, doesn’t have abandoned buildings, political corruption, or abject poverty? Really? Maybe L.A of 100 years ago.

And I am not sure what Brad Lidge being the worst closer ever, which he is not, has anything to do with yesterday as he didn’t even pitch. But you wouldn’t know that as your 4 inning appearance at the game ended in the 7th inning.

Your team, your city and your fans are as fraudulent as they come. Sure the team may be rich in history but it ends there. While your ownership is fighting over the team like it’s custody battle ours is laughing it up. While your team is struggling and needing our teams help to squeak out one of two games at home, ours is taking home field from you. Not long ago your fans ripped Barry Bonds for supposedly being on roids, you had signs, giant fake needles and now….you support Manny like his Jesus with dread locks…frauds. That’s what you are and thats what you will always be.

Enjoy the next week or so because once it’s over, our team will be going back to the World Series and your’s will be relegated to cameo’s on The Hills.

    See ya.

    Oh no… George55 is back.

All of these low life Dodgers fans can suck a big one; where were you when we stole home field advantage off of your beloved Kershaw in game one? I love when they show the crowd at Dodger Stadium… you see a bunch of upper class chums talking over a glass of sparkling water sitting next to gang bangers with bandanas over their faces.

We stole home field… we still have Hamels and Lee (x2). They’ve got Wolf and ?? The only way that they can win a game is if we GIVE it to them… an Utley error and a Cha’lie blunder. Should have kept Pedro in the game… he had that team completely off balance and was pitching with a purpose. With the bottom of the order coming up and our bench not exactly hitting the cover off the ball, I would have stuck with him. The Dodgers wanted no part of Pedro… they’ll want no part of Lee, either. Welcome to Philadelphia.

To Ed R: Fabulous post! If anyone had said that the Phillies would split in LA and take away their home field advantage, wouldn’t we all have been happy? It was just coming so close that made it tough. I don’t think this is any kind of a momentum maker for the Dodgers long-term. Remember how many times the Phillies have come back from a huge deficit to win a game in the 9th inning….and then lost the next game? The Phillies will win games 3, 5, and 7 and take the series. Lee will win both his starts (3 and 7), and Hamels will win at home in Game 5. He won Game 1, didn’t he? (And whose throw was responsible for making Game 1 an adventure?)

Hey Jason Bintliff, it is ludicrous to attempt to blame Charlie Manuel for this loss. Charlie’s game plan going in was to pull Martinez after 75-95 pitches, and after Chan Ho’s performance in Game 1, pulling Pedro when he did makes complete sense.

Utley’s defense is just plain weird. This guy is a gamer and has been a rock-solid defender in pressure situations for a while now so his Knoblachian throws are quite disturbing. He had all kinds of time to plant his foot and throw out Martin on the 8th inning DP opportunity. That’s the ballgame right there.

But I agree that a split is something to celebrate and I’ll take Lee and Blanton over Kuroda and Wolf any day. And we’ve got to assume that Hamels is due for a big game at home at night. Cole’s been a bit of a crybaby lately and I hope somebody’s given him a talking-to. We need him to cowboy up in Game 5. I like our chances of taking 2 out of 3 or sweeping in Philly. Bullpen hiccups notwithstanding, we are a much better team than the Dodgers.

First off….. george55……you’re an idiot. The “hillbilly” only got us to the postseason for the past 3 years and a world title last season. And this season is FAR from finished.

karen……What Hamels did in Game 1 is inexcusable. PERIOD!! You just DON’T show up your teammates…especially when you’re the one having an of year.

    ______

Taking Pedro out was puzzling, but I understand the move. The bullpen should have been able to do the job and Utley messed up. That’s it. We move on and win 2 of 3 in Philly. I never thought we’d win both games in LA anyway and have always said that this series goes at least 6 games. So hunker down, PhilliesNation……it’s gonna be a long week with lots of twists and turns. And enjoy it. It’s October baseball……and the Phillies are participating.

Well, I don’t think Pedro needed to come out. But OK, he did. But then again maybe Feliz could have gotten to that ball to lead off the eight. And Chan Ho might have been able to chase that bunt down better than an eight month old child. And I KNOW Chase should have turned the double play. Tough loss. Let’s move on.

P.S. Hamels is starting to irritate me.

It is easy to blame Feliz, Park the fielder, Park the pitcher, Utley and Happ but the bottom line is you can’t expect to win a playoff game 1-0. Neither team could hit after the 4 hour slugfest the night before, in 90 degree heat, with an ump who had a wide strike zone and some solid pitching.

I was one of the few who EXPECTED the Phils to sweep the series. More importantly, I expect them to WIN the series. The Dodgers didn’t show me much in 2 games at home so I don’t see them winning another game and absolutely don’t see them winning the series. And that my friends is all that matters in the postseason.

When is george55 and his/her posse going to tell us what day the Braves playoff series startts?!?!?!? I can’t find the start times anywhere.

-1st I like to apologize for yester day. That was uncalled for.

-2nd- I went to LA about a year ago. Not impressed. Let’sust say T.V. works wonders for covering up the filth in that city.

-3rd- Charlie was right for pulling him after 7. Maybe Charlie now regrets the 130 pitcvh outing. I thought Pedro was lost the Russel Martin single in the 8th in the shadows. Chase choked of course, but after thinking some of his throws in Game 1 and yesterday after his wild throw, I’m not that surprised. He was very tentative after the 7th in Gamee 1. He needs to just let that go and move on to Game 3.

-I still like Phillies in 5 games. We got Lee tomm and we finally get some nite games at the Bank. This series will not go back to LA Dodgers stadium. Only the Dodgers will. Just to clean out their lockers. The dream WS match-up Phillies vs Yankees will happen this year.

Dipsy…..good to see you here again. Where have you been? I was beginning to wonder…

Yes…let’s move on. We can pick this game apart over and over but the bottom line is that the Phillies BEAT THEMSELVES. You can’t blame Charlie for taking out Pedro (although I’ll go on record as saying he should have at least started the 8th). The bullpen choked (Happ) and Chase deserves the Jeltz.

As I said, we come home to some home cookin’ and Lee vs. Kuroda should work out in our favor (although baseball’s funny…you just don’t know sometimes).

And yes….Hamels is starting to irritate me as well. Grow up, Princess!!

Dodger Blue… Cheesesteak are the least of Philly’s contribution to Western Culture, most notable our biggest contribution would be that whole “birthplace of liberty” thing. Other than the silver screen, which even you have to admit is on it’s way out, and the bloods and the crips, L.A.’s significance as a cultural hotbed is fairly limited. Oh yeah I guess we can thank you for the Kardashians as well… I guess. Let’s not forget that if not for Philly, we’d all be speaken with English accents telling the butler that we’d rather have one lump as opposed to two in our afternoon tea. Get a clue and better yet, get a Dodger blog to spew your nonsense. Sorry to the rest of you for this rant, but that guy is clearly an idiot. Oh one last thing, winning a best of 7 series in 5 games is no accident, we owned you last year and shall do the same this year.
