MLB Drops the Ball on Start Times

Just because it’s a 2:37 first pitch doesn’t mean you still cant have a good time. Oh, maybe you’ll have to take off from work, miss a day’s pay, and spend $100, or more, on a ticket. But you’ll still have fun.
Lest we forget that last year, when the Phillies faced the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, the start time for the opening game was 3 p.m. Game 2, as it turned out, began at a much more manageable six o’clock. How is that possible? How can the Phillies/Brewers series, pitting two teams who had rarely sniffed the postseason prior to 2008, be given a 6 p.m. time slot? Must have been a mistake.
Bring it back to the present, and here’s what we have: back-to-back games, with the last two National League Champions, starting before the kids get out of school. Once was an insult to the reigning World Series Champions and their fans, who for 82 games packed Citizens Bank Park to 102.2 percent of capacity. Twice is more like a punch in the mouth for fans that sold out 73 games this year, including 42 straight at one point.
MLB considers nothing but money, and it’s never more evident than now. Philadelphia has put itself on the map as one of the premier baseball towns in the U.S. and Denver, while proving to be a pigskin town, still ranked 11th in all of baseball in attendance. Still, that wasn’t enough to allow both teams to play in the crisp, nighttime air in South Philly. No, MLB saves that for Denver.
They would rather save the later starts for when the temperatures barely creep above the freezing point in the Rocky Mountains. They, whomever they might be, have conjured up a sked that says “Phillies at Rockies, 9:37 p.m. est. Be thankful for that, because on a Saturday night, you and the kids can stay up late and watch as the clock approaches, and likely passes, midnight. MLB decided to abhor Philadelphians once again for Sunday’s night game out in Colorado. Start time: 10 p.m. Eastern.
This is not a cry for Major League Baseball to change it’s policy on everything Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox. They will continue to play dumb and give the advantage to larger television markets. And isn’t that what it’s all about? Playing to the TV Markets?
It’s hard to argue that the Yankees should not be on at, or close to, prime time. But let’s be equal here. In a game that prides itself on revenue sharing – which is supposed to allow for equality amongst its franchises – has certainly dropped the ball.
How about one of the two games being set near prime time here in Philly so that countless people were not burdened with having to take off from work, or yank their kids from class (not that they would care), or sell their tickets because the other two options were not options at all?
For a city that is currently reeling from a budget crisis, Phillies fans have found a way to buy the tickets, merchandise, beer, soda, hot dogs, and parking that comes along with a night out at the park. This town has shown its undying support for their team, and at the same time, for the entire game of baseball. Would it have been too much to ask for the same in return from a game that so many people value, and enjoy to the fullest on a daily basis? Have you seen big, empty seats behind home plate for any of the Phillies games this season? Not a chance; but at the new Yankee Stadium, it serves as a beautiful backdrop for TBS or FOX to show during one of their telecasts.
If there happens to be a Game 5, does 2 a.m work for you?

The cap in football is what gives all teams a chance to be competitive. The nfl is a money printing machine. Does it have to do with the cap or that people just like football much more than baseball?
Of course if you’re a fan of baseball, the small market teams rarely compete although there are exceptions. There are a lot of putrid teams in the nfl but fans have more hope of their team coming out of it because of parity and it keeps everyone interested.
The fans of small market teams with up and coming players that are possible superstars know that those players won’t be around long and that must be frustrating as hell.
So not only do the big market teams have a competitive edge, they also have an advantage in getting their games played when they want them in the playoffs. Baseball needs to make as much money as they can so they oblige.
Baseball’s ending times in the world series are ridiculous also. Even though we were pissed, that rain delay made it possible to see an early ending when the phillies played the 3 inning deciding game.
Maybe some of that makes sense..lol

Maybe you should look at where and when the other games are being played. They had to play 3 games on Wednesday and Thursday and two of the games are out on the west coast. I know it sucks that the games here are at 230, but do you think it is fair for LA fans to have to go to a game at 10AM? On Wednesday would it have been fair to make the winner of the Twins/Tigers game play at 230, less than 18 hours after playing the night before halfway across the country? Also the Rockies are on the west coast and on Sunday the series that were in the PST will be in either CST or EST. There are 4 games scheduled for Sunday and the Boston fans have to be there at 12 and the Rockies are the only team that can play that late and still have a decent time for the local fans. Everything is not a slap in the Phils face and while most of it is for tv and money reasons it is not MLB trying to screw Philly but rather they are playing the only logical times.

PJ why couldn’t the phillies and yankees switched days for game 2? We could start at 6 today with the yankees starting at 2:30 yesterday and we get the off day today instead. Wouldn’t that have made it better for both the phillies and rockies fans?
Sounds like a money decision to me. Give me a break

Thanks PJ I actually did look at where they played.
And I Disagree, they could have started either LA Game at 3:30 EST, 12:30 LA time for one of the games. I’m only saying that one of the games could or should have been switched.
A 3:30, 6:30, 10pm schedule isnt that hard is it? You can call me an idiot if you think Im way off base here, but why should we get the short end…

The yankees could also play sunday at 10 pm and the phillies could play monday at 5 pm if you want to talk about logical.
No we’re talking about money.

MLB sets its post season before the season even begins. (You could have looked these days the games would be played back in April, obviously not knowing which teams would be slotted, but that the two NL series start Wed and only one AL series starts Wed) There are two schedules for each league and MLB gives the team witht he best record in each league the option to choose the schedule they want to play. Since the Yankees had the best record in the AL they chose the schedule they wanted which happened to be Wed, off day Thur and then they play again Friday. So that rules out the possibility for the Yankees switching days like you said. That being said the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers all played home games on Wed. It would be utterly unfair to the Twins to have them playing the 230 game just from a competitive standpoint. Also you can’t have the Dodgers game starting at 1030 AM local time. SO the Phils by default have to play at 230 on Wed. On Thursday the Yankees are off, so there are two west coast teams playing at home. Neither of them could play at 230 eastern b/c once again that would be 1030 AM local time in LA. So by default the Phils had to play when they did. It stinks but I don’t see how you can possibly argue that the Phils should have played another time. If there wasn’t a play in game the night before I agree that MLB could have given the Phils the 6PM game on Wed, but that didn’t happen.

You will always be second fiddle to the NY teams no matter how much you win. That is the issue here. Philadelphia has an infactuation with NY and they can never win that battle so stop trying.
Just be thankful you are still playing. Yes it’s a money issue. Wouldn’t you take more money??
Philadelphia has to learn to handle that you will be second rate to NY and that it won’t bother you guys so much. NY is the best market and will be forever.
No one nationally care about the Rockies and Phillies anyway.

Believe me I could care less about being second or third or fourth fiddle. And even though the schedule was made in April, or whichever month it came out, there is always room for adjustment. Just ask Bud Selig about Game 5.
Does anyone nationally care much more about LA/STL? Stretch out the first round then like the NBA does to cater to TV even more. You dont see them playing in the afternoon.

Like all of you, I follow this team not only every day for the 162 games, but 365 and I have done that for about 25 years now.
With this being the 3rd year in a row making the playoffs, this is the 3rd year in a row that I have gotten screwed. I am a teacher and a football coach, and I cant just take off from work to see the afternoon games…..I have to go coach. There is no call in sick…..or leave early to catch the game. I’m stuck on the field doing what I get paid to do.
I have gotten to see a total of 2 innings the last two days and I’m sick about it. All I wish for is to see them in the playoffs and I even when they get there I miss the game. MLB is a joke.

The postseason has already been stretched out. They did that starting last year. The World Series is going to run into November this year. There might already be snow in Denver this weekend. The only other time in history a WS game has been played in November was in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks shut baseball down for a weeka nd everything had to be pushed back. When MLB announced that the post season was going to be expanded with more off days over two years ago there was a huge uproar in that. Also expanded the post season with more off days cheapens the regular season even more. Baseball is a game where teams play at least 6 out of every 7 days and you use your team depth to get into the post season. Now you want teams to play every other day and give starters all this extra rest? That makes absolutely no sense. Both LCS series this year are going to be played over 10 days if it goes to seven games. Other than during the All-Star break can you find another time in the season when 7 games are played over a 10 day period. There are also already 2 off days in the LDS series. It would be ridiculous for teams to have off every other day, that is not baseball. Also if there weren’t two home teams on the west coast then this wouldn’t be as big an issue as it is this year. It happens, expanding the rounds to more off days is not the solution. The Phils had some tough luck this year with the schedule and it really wasn’t MLB sticking it to them or their fans.

MLB, and its ingenious King Selig, completely lack justice and reason.
When the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Also there are a lot more people nationally who care about the LA/STL series than the Phl/Col series. LA is the 2nd biggest market in the US and the Cardinals are one of the most popular teams in all of baseball. The entire midwest region is mostly Cards fans and the numers for that series, the Sox series and the Yanks series will dwarf the Phils series if they were head to head. No one outside of Philly or Denver care about these two teams, but 4 of the other 6 teams in the playoffs have national followings. Where the games are played is the reason for the way the schedule is this year, but if it weren’t the Phils would still get the short end of the stick even as defending champs.

2) LA
3)……..PHILLY

I never said that Boston was in the top 3 tv markets but the Red Sox have a lot more fans throughout the country than the Phils do, and draw much higher ratings. BTW Philly is the #4 Market.

I would have liked to see MLB step up and be creative… one point that was made to me is that the players have no room to complain since their salaries are largely determined by total revenue (revenue sharing)… fair enough… but as a city and as a fan base, I think that we have every right to be upset. I’m one of those people that had to sell my tickets because I couldn’t go. One stupid start time is understandable but two games is absurd. There are only two games on Saturday (no day games)… why the F don’t you have three games on Saturday?!? Further, someone would have to convince me that starting games at 2:37 is better than having two regional broadcasts at primetime… I just don’t see it. Baseball is one of those sports that many people don’t tune in for unless their team is on… baseball or The Office?? That’s a tough call for me but not for my wife… and she’s the boss.
MLB has a major problem on their hands… people in Denver aren’t happy about this either. No one wants to see their team have to play in 20 degree weather.
Bud Selig, you are a total douche.

The Phillies and Rockies owners are not going to do anything to change it either. THey may publicly say how horrible it is but do you really think they are going to complain when there is record attendance? The time of the game is not affecting their receipts at the gate, so they have no motivation to enact a change. Also the Networks pay to broadcast the games, which all of the owners get a part of. There is no incentive by anyone in and around baseball to change anything. Until ballparks are half empty for playoff games b/cof bad start times owners won’t care. They have already collected their tv money and then the tv controlls who goes where b/c they have to pay their shareholders by having the most attractive matchups for advertisers to pay the most premiums. The only way this system fails is if the teams can’t sell tickets b/c that is new revenue for owners. This year though as I stated above has not even been controlled by tv, but rather by time zones.

I don’t understand why they can’t play multiple games at the same time. One game on TBS and one game on TNT. Of the four other games played I’ve watched maybe 6 total innings. Besides a baseball freak. Who is sitting through 3 baseball games a day?

According to Digital Sports Daily:
The Red Sox/Angels Game #1 delivered a 13.2 rating in the Boston market and a 8.0 rating in the Los Angeles market.
The Cardinals/Dodgers Game #2 delivered a 18.3 rating in the St. Louis market and a 6.5 rating in the Los Angeles market.
The Rockies/Phillies Game #2 delivered a 15.2 rating in the Philadelphia market and a 9.2 rating in the Denver market.
Phillies had the second best day out of any city in the playoffs yesterday.

Fox did split telecast years ago. One game was on Fox and the other was on FX. That way Fox could maximize primetime advertising. To bad Bud “wet blanket” Selig wasn’t a fan of the split telecast.

It’s going to be great fun watching Pedro pitch this game, and he can definitely win the big game. Having watched him for many years in Boston, I believe he has proven to be much better at pitching in very hot weather than cold. And those sore muscles in his neck would be more comfortable in the heat, for sure. But our lineup and one of the greatest pitchers of all time? I like our chances.
I would have rather seen Blanton start this game, but I guess Charlie would rather use him as a reliever. We’ll see what Charlie does tonight with the pen. I’ll trust him. He is, after all manager of the defending champs. Keepin’ the Phaith . . .

Some really good points above. Baseball cannot escape economic poletics. I have lived several places and unfortunately, in many places, being a Phillies fan did not account for much. You could always find Red Sox fans, Cub fans, Met fans and Yankee fans, but Phillies fans were like hens’ teeth. I LOVE THE PHILS AND AM GLAD THEY ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS. Fact is that not many people in Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and other key places give a damn about my beloved Phils. And they are the ones who lose !!!!

[...] The NFL, on the other hand, would have no problem with a small market team in their Super Bowl. The NFL is a far inferior league to MLB but they are extremely successful at selling storylines, so that a Super Bowl between Green Bay and Baltimore will get America just as fired up as a Super Bowl between New York and Chicago. Meanwhile, the MLB strategy is to just beat America over the head with Yankees and Red Sox and pray to God that one of the two of them make the Series. It is a pathetic, misguided, and embarrassingly amateur marketing strategy. RELATED: Phillies Nation comments on the stupidity of dissing a packed CBP for a half empty Yankee Stadium. [...]

P.J: your start times are wrong. 2:37 in Philly is 11:37 in Los Angeles, not 10:37.
I can see the L.A-St. Louis matchup getting one primetime start, but there is absolutely no reason why they should be favored with two. And even an idiot knows you can’t expect balmy whether in Denver at 9:37 P.M. in the middle of October.
This schedule is a complete and total farce. Maybe it was set up in the spring, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been changed somewhat in September. The Phils have been screwed, their fans have been screwed, Colorado’s fans have been screwed, probably just for the money, but possibly for a more sinister reason. Giving the defending World Series Champions such horrible start times means they might be less likely to win again, thus supporting Crud Selig’s ideal of parity. Fewer afternoon fans means less of a homefield advantage.
No matter when or where this repulsive schedule was dreamed up, there is absolutely no reason in H— that one team should get ALL the better start times. May MLB’s planners all go to Denver and FREEZE TO DEATH.

Yes, P.J. owners will complain. If the Yankees games are on in primetime, and people are bored with the Yankees, are they going to watch? Fans of the Phils, or the Rockies, or the Dodgers might not. The Phils, being the defending champs, probably would have a greater audience than some of the other playoff teams, if the schedulers hadn’t put them on at such impossible times. How many fans can watch from work? How many children, old ladies, and old men can stay up maybe past midnight?
No, this schedule plain sucks, and no amount of blah, blah, blah P.J. excuses and P.J. questionable logic, and P.J. erroneous time zone arguments can ever change that.
If it’s any consolation, I think with all the complaining by players (i.E.-Cole Hamels), fans, and ownership, next year’s schedule will probably be a lot better. Maybe when the Phils are once again in it–and they will be–they’ll get a better shake.

Thanks for the history lesson PJ…. I mean that in a good way… Very informative. But if anyone thinks that Bud Sleazy/TBS/Fox/TV AD People would not have changed the times around if Tampa Bay and Baltimore made the playoffs instead of Boston and New York your very naive. So it’s Pedro and his mini-fro for Game 3…. This bleep has worn me out mentally already… I’m just going to hope our O comes through and I wish Pedro Martinez well. Would I play for the New York Yankees or Mets?
“I’d retire first. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you’re riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing… The biggest thing I don’t like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country? ”

That would be that braves closer but I can’t forget his name joedad. I think dann the idiot has it the wrong way. We really don’t care about NY. Think about it, as an eagles fan they are 90 minutes up the road but the dallas cowboys are the team we hate most. The mets are the ones foaming at the mouths about us, because we are the champs and we forgot about them halfway through the season.
They have 2 teams up there from every sport also, they are bound to win sometimes. The mets and yankees have tons of money, but they each haven’t been in a world series since 2000. The law of averages say that if you have that much of an unfair advantage over most teams because of money and you have 2 teams in the same city you should be world beaters.
Didn’t tug tell you guys to shove it?

It is unfair and ridiculous to fans but thats what you get when NY is 8 times larger than Philly. Even if half of NY hated the Yankees and didn’t watch, it would still be a bigger market, and always will be because of its population, thus producing bigger tv ratings and more “viewings”
I hate it as much as the next person and it won’t change until Buddy Bud Senial Selig leaves.
As far as the season goes, Philly gets screwed playing Colorado in whats going to be the coldest game in history….29 degrees! Cmon’ was the game meant to be played then?! At least say, hey hmmm lets change the schedule and not freeze the players, get them potentially injuried from hitting balls with a frozen bat and for the fans, after all the game is about the fans…at least i think hahah
Wait till the Twins get their new outdoor stadium..what a joke! They arent going to be able to play the first 6 weeks and they certainly won’t be able to play in October and November, let alone late September up there! hahahaha then NY and AL can be suckered for winter ball…..oh wait, i’m sure they will rearrange the schedule so they don’t have to play at 10 pm CST cause it will be too cold for them.
NL always gets screwed.

TBS absolutely blows. I don’t know who the hell those announcers are but they are the F’in worst! Are they watching the same team i am?! Do they look over stats before the game?!
Some of the comments aren’t even factual….such as the one announcer said Cole might have an elbow problem and thats the reason why he didnt start game 1 when in fact anybody and any idiot “informative” announcer knows that it was so he could get his normal days rest…we all know in Philly how important that is.
Then the announcer made misguided, baltenly false, innaccurate statemets with statistics saying how jimmy rollins hits barely as a switch hitter and questioning why he was hitting left …duh what an idiot!
They didn’t even show any excitement, Hell i thought i was gonna fall asleep. I couldn’t even hear the crowd, they barely showed any excited fans, i barely saw a statistic on the screen and did they even talk baseball?!
Jesus, how the hell does TBS get the games?! I’d rather have Fox do it or even Comcast.
TBS….Total Bull Sh^^
