Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers

Cole Hamels, LHP vs. Clayton Kershaw, LHP

Time: 8:07 p.m at Dodger Stadium
Weather: Clear, 69
TV: TBS
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The National League Championship Series begins tonight.  For the second consecutive year and the fifth time overall (tied for the MLB record) the Phillies and the Dodgers are the last remaining teams in the senior circuit.

Cole Hamels, fresh off paternity leave, will take to
the hill tonight for the Phillies.  His last game was certainly not his best postseason performance.  In an abbreviated start against the Rockies last week, he allowed four runs on four hits in five innings.  On the other hand, he was lights out against the Dodgers during the regular season with a complete game shutout at Chavez Ravine.  Dodger hitters are .228/.261/. 368 lifetime with 31 hits and 29 strikeouts in 136 combined at bats.

The matchup on paper favors Cole; after that though, the bullpen numbers are not as favorable – particularly for Scott Eyre and more recently Brad Lidge.  One could surmise that the longer Cole pitches, the better chance the Phillies have.

On the flip side, we have Clayton Kershaw – another young gun.  Don’t let his 8-8 record (0-2 against the Phils) this season fool you, his 2.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 7 homers in 171 games are the numbers to focus on tonight.  This lefty is stingy with his fastball and nasty curve. He has a tendency to work the outside corner against lefties at the plate.  We know this guy has good stuff but the question remains – can the 21-year old handle the pressure of the postseason and the Phillies lineup?

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).

Tonight the Philadelphia Brewery brings you Kenzinger, named after the lovely corner of the city known as Kensington. The beer evokes many of the same feelings as the 19125. Its retro facade hides a classic beer taste – yet it won’t go down without a strong bitter bite. Have some perogies alongside it for dinner, then sit back and enjoy some NLCS for dessert. – By Brian

Does anyone know if there’s any steps pitchers can and do take in order to keep their arms stretched out during waits like these?

hotdog they aren’t failing at pitches either, hence the walks

far from over… But Larry Bowa was right when he was asked about the Phillies offense. “The Phillies offense is so explosive. They’ll go 0,0,0,0 and then 5.” Well said Mr. Bowa. Well said indeed….

Awesome, and it’s not just about the big hitters hitting homers either. Unsuspecting Ruiz hits a 4-bagger, but its Rollins putting the ball in play and advancing on wild pitches and Chase walking before Howard hits a double on a rope.

The Phillies can hit and after Cole got into a groove I just want all the prognosticators to choke on their Dodger love. They don’t have to admit they were wrong, so long as that’s how it plays out.

Brian, did the game come back on TV for you?

Ok, forgive me for admitting this but I feel like I have formed a bond with some of you.

A few nights ago after the Phillies had given up 3 runs in the 8th vs the Rockies I started pacing around the house…it’s what I do. Anyway, I saw my wifes black head band just sitting there, so I put it on just to joke around. I do stupid things like that.

Anyway a few minutes later the Phillies rally started and the rest is history. After the game I told my wife that I would have to wear the head band from here on out because it clearly was powerful. She laughed, I laughed, whatever.

Tonight, Phils are losing, not really hitting so what do I do? I look for the headband, find it in time for the top of the 5th inning to start and, well we all just saw what happened.

I’d like to see Cole Hamels develop a knuckleball.

    Lol, knuckleball…that’s the spirit Mike

I’d like to see Hamels and Utley’s wife make out, somethings however are just left to pipe dreams. Sorry Mike D.

I don’t know where all this Dodger love from prognosticators is. Only 5 of ESPN’s 25 baseball “experts” picked the Dodgers to beat the Cardinals.

Harry…. Bowa is a class act. I love the respect he gives the Phills.

Brian, I guess the hate is spread out pretty evenly between the Dodgers, Yankees, Angels. Not sure how anyone can like Ethier, Swisher, Teixiera, Arod, Burnett, Sabathia and I can’t support LA and their douche bag fans who think that living in Southern California is something to be proud of instead of ashamed of.

I hope that it wasnt going to be one awesome half inning total. I walked out for a bathroom break come back to see 1 out, runners on the corners, so I dont know how Cole Pitched, but then to see Utley with the error. Come on guys. Dont give them god damn runs.

am i sensing another anti-philly bias here? or do they just have a huge hard on for LA?

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

Now this ENTIRE INNING is on Utleys shoulders honestly. Had he made that throw we are out of the inning. instead we are only up by one.

I love how excited these asshole announcers get when teams who play the Phils do something good. Then when we do something good, it’s somber.

Cole REALLY needs to not let things like that error get him rattled, you could tell the way he reacted he was going to lose it a little.

Wait a minute, is this a passionate LA crowd that I’m seeing? Weird…

Okay, just have to get more runs. Still got the lead. Nice try at the DP ball, Colbert, almost worked.

I notice it too. The announcers are so pro Dodgers. It is sickening.

Yeah seriously I can’t get over the general anti-Phillies sentiment of announcers pretty much across the board, Joe Buck, Chip Caray, Steve Phillips, ESPN, Fox…doesn’t matter. I just can’t stand it

Are you f ing kidding me? already this is starting? Didn’t they just win in the 9th a few days ago. Isn’t that considered late in the game? Are they still wining? I’m going to have to start banning people

ok two things…why wasn’t manny intentionally walked with 1st base open?kemp good sure but manny one of the best hitters to play the game and whats going on out there in the middle of that infield?thats the 2nd straight game we could have an inning ending dp and it cost us you know.

wth, Utley – I thought you were the man?

Way to go Cole You give up a 2 bagger to Russel Mertin to lead off and then gopher it to Ramirez You suck with a lead

Brian I don’t think Utley would have had him if he made the throw, Rollins could not make the transfer quickly, supposedly it got stuck in the webbing of his glove. That was just a botched play all around.

Raul’s slowed down since I remarked that he’d been playing out of his mind on one of the threads before Game 4. My bad about the jinx, guys.

What is the point of having Rollins on this team?
last year screamed about getting rid of burrell on this website during the playoff, and he was gone. I think i am going to launch a campaign to get rid of Rollins.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

Well we will still have the lead, but if comparing Bullpens. umm, I am still not confident with our bullpen. Hopefully they can keep this game, but it all depends on who shows up. If Mad Dog shows up, than awesome, but if Ryan Madson who pitched against the Rockies in game 4, well thats not good.
