Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers

Cole Hamels, LHP vs. Clayton Kershaw, LHP

Time: 8:07 p.m at Dodger Stadium
Weather: Clear, 69
TV: TBS
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The National League Championship Series begins tonight.  For the second consecutive year and the fifth time overall (tied for the MLB record) the Phillies and the Dodgers are the last remaining teams in the senior circuit.

Cole Hamels, fresh off paternity leave, will take to
the hill tonight for the Phillies.  His last game was certainly not his best postseason performance.  In an abbreviated start against the Rockies last week, he allowed four runs on four hits in five innings.  On the other hand, he was lights out against the Dodgers during the regular season with a complete game shutout at Chavez Ravine.  Dodger hitters are .228/.261/. 368 lifetime with 31 hits and 29 strikeouts in 136 combined at bats.

The matchup on paper favors Cole; after that though, the bullpen numbers are not as favorable – particularly for Scott Eyre and more recently Brad Lidge.  One could surmise that the longer Cole pitches, the better chance the Phillies have.

On the flip side, we have Clayton Kershaw – another young gun.  Don’t let his 8-8 record (0-2 against the Phils) this season fool you, his 2.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 7 homers in 171 games are the numbers to focus on tonight.  This lefty is stingy with his fastball and nasty curve. He has a tendency to work the outside corner against lefties at the plate.  We know this guy has good stuff but the question remains – can the 21-year old handle the pressure of the postseason and the Phillies lineup?

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).

Tonight the Philadelphia Brewery brings you Kenzinger, named after the lovely corner of the city known as Kensington. The beer evokes many of the same feelings as the 19125. Its retro facade hides a classic beer taste – yet it won’t go down without a strong bitter bite. Have some perogies alongside it for dinner, then sit back and enjoy some NLCS for dessert. – By Brian

That’s not how you respond when the home team pulls to within one, Phils.

I wouldnt go as far as fall apart completely late in the game, but honestly over all our bullpen has not been that great.

Rollins suck! Cant hit, now can’t play defense. What’s the point of a leadoff man that hits for .230 and chokes in last year’s playoff, this season, and now this playoffs?

ok let’s get this straight you can’t walk manny because that brings the friggin tying run to the plate….these people turn on this team so friggin fastttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt omggggggggggg

I know it’s after the fact, but you don’t pitch to Manny in that spot. Period. That irked me last year in the NLCS. Manny was the only guy killing us yet Charlie continued to pitch to him. Makes no sense what so ever. Error’s happen. That was a physical mistake. Bleep happens. But the brain cramps/mental mistakes is what kills you in baseball. That 2run blast is on Charlie… He used to coach him, he should know better… You have to make somebody else beat you in that spot.

Jeff, I understand Manny’s playoff history but the way he has been hitting lately no way I put him on to give Kemp a chance to tie the game. You had to pitch to Manny in that spot and unfortunately he hit a dinger.

ray, the only one who is acting like a moron is James, dont start pointing at everyone for turning on the team, and wanting to trade (a gold glover) players. “can’t play defense” LOL. Thats a pretty stupid comment.

Let’s all just calm the F down. They are still winning, just breath. Remember, the Phillies never say lose.

Anyone else cringe when the TBS announcers were remarking on how heartened the Phillies must be by Cole Hamels? As soon as they did that, I knew the Dodgers would rally. It’s like they’re doing their best to jinx us out of a repeat.

But come on, folks, it isn’t over, we’re still ahead, and Hamels will settle down. I’m sure of it. This will probably be his last inning. My only question is, who’ll pitch the 7th?

yeah i’m hard pressed to get angry with hamels…he got the double play ball he needed…like Corey stated early in his article Hamels has had some bad luck (.325 BABIP) which that flub certainly attests to. Doesn’t mean I think a third pitch is still in order in the off season. Could have keep Manny a little more off balance and perhaps produced a better outcome.

It’s OK dudes, you have Brad Lidge to blow save later , remember this season ?

Forget the 7th, who will pitch the 8th and 9th if this score stays. Probably Lidge, but is Lidge really back? Im not so sure. Havent the Dodgers owned Lidge this season?

not really hamels fault..he made a really really good pitch to ethier and got a ground ball right to jimmy but he just has bad luck..sucks though cause he could of been out of the inning still 5-1

All this being said I am very concerned with Hamels continued inability to finish guys off…Belliard was in an 0-2 count and comes back with a single. Good pitchers put these guys down.

  • Posts: 0 Brian of CO

Hamels still did give up 2 home runs though. and now gets 1 out followed by 2 singles. He needs a ground ball. If he gives up another hit, he cant blame anyone for this inning.

We need to get a shrink for Cole next year. It’s ridiculous how quickly he falls apart now.

Wtf TBS? Chooch is showing his signs and they say “hamels doesn’t want to throw the change up”! Wtf just give signs away why don’t you!

Late inning have been a struggle for this team lately. Weird things always happen in the late inning. I don’t know why. Cole pitches ok and the score shouyld still be 5-1.

Much respect to Carlos Ruiz. That guy is a baller.

Its nice to know that the phills can put up 5 more at any moment.

I remember, Brian. That four-game series in LA on the heels of that Yankee series is when we knew something was wrong with Lidge. He does have his demons, and I think Lidge can overcome those. I’ll say confidence-wise, he’s 75% back. His confidence will jump to pretty close to 100% if he gets the save out here.

Of course, that’s if Hamels, and now Durbin, hand him a lead. Poor Cole – even that changeup he threw to Manny wasn’t bad, it’s just Manny plays as well against us as Vlad Guerrero used to when he was with the Expos.

Durbin time. And I’m out of beer.

mycruzincooler… Rollins is a serious liability on this team, not a spark plug anymore. He didnt hit well in last year’s playoffs. Then he struggles during this regular season (i dont care that he did better in second half, his avg is still terrible), and he’s just about the worst player on the Phillies team so far in this postseason.
I can’t stand it anymore. No one dare to criticize him openly. Well he needs to be traded after this season weather we win it all or not.

And once again, Uncle Chuck creates his own problems…. Nice guy, great guy… But some of his moves this post season have been 100% stupid!

Why does Charlie bring his worst reliever into the biggest spot in the ballgame?

alright glad to see Durbin get that out, now lets see if Happ can shut down Thome….

H.K, to what move are you referring?

Tommy, no they won’t. Take a look at their rotation…Kershaw 21 with nasty stuff but doesn’t have the consistent command yet, Padilla…then Kuroda who is coming off an injury. Not to mention the Phillies lineup is superior.

    Phillies in 5

Happ vs. Thome, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, I’m losing my composure, Happ, don’t screw up, that’s all you have to do, don’t screw up!

this all couldve been avoided if chase and jimmy couldve turned that double play.

well a walk is better than a hit or homer! i’ll take my chances with Furcal…

the umps suck again…who ever decides the umpire crew for the playoffs should lose their job because they blow.

This is absolutely ridiculous that they allowed this delay to go on.
