Phillies and Dodgers Meet in NLCS Again

When the term “rivarly” comes to mind, the Philadelphia Phillies think of the New York Mets while the Los Angeles Dodgers think of the San Francisco Giants.  The truth is, the Phillies and Dodgers have bad blood between each other, and it goes beyond Tommy Lasorda beating up the Phillie Phanatic.  Their historical meetings in the National League Championship Series are the roots of a Phillies/Dodgers rivalry.

In 1977, the Phillies and Dodgers first met during the League Championship Series.  That year, the Phillies won 101 games, a franchise best.  The Phillies took the first game of the series, 7-5, but the Dodgers answered with three consecutive wins.  Dusty Baker was named the Most Valuable Player, but it was game three that stirred controversy.

The Phillies had a comfortable 5-3 lead headed into 9th inning before a huge turn of events.  Davy Lopes hit a ground ball that deflected off Mike Schmidt. Larry Bowa bare handed the ball in mid-air. In the same motion, he fired to first. Lopes was ruled safe, although the replay clearly showed that Lopes was out. Instead of ending the game, the tying run scored.  Bill Russell’s RBI single scored Lopes. The Dodgers won the game and eventually the series.  October 7, 1977 will forever be known as “Black Friday.”

1978′s NLCS featured a rematch. Once again, the Dodgers won the series, 3-1.  Steve Carlton was unavailable until game three because he pitched the National League East clinching game a few days before the NLCS.  Game three was the only game that the Phillies won.   For the second year in a row, Russell drove in the game winning run.

In 1983, the Dodgers dominated the Phillies in the regular season, winning 11 of 12 against their cross-country rivals.  However, the Phillies won the games that mattered most, winning the NLCS in four games.  Carlton shutout the Dodgers to open the series. The lone run came on Mike Schmidt’s home run.  After losing the second game of the series, the Phillies rebounded and won the final two games. Gary Matthews crushed three home runs during the series, earning the NLCS MVP.

In each of these series, the team that won the NLCS lost the World Series.  That changed in 2008.

In game one, Chase Utley and Pat Burrell’s sixth inning home runs off Derek Lowe led to a victory.  Brett Myers drove in three runs during game two.  In game four, Shane Victorino, still furious about a fastball that almost nailed him in the head, homered in the eighth inning to tie the game at five.  Matt Stairs had no problem sending Jonathan Broxton’s fastball “deep into the night.”  Stairs’ game winning homer gave the Phillies a 7-5 win.  Cole Hamels, the NLCS MVP, shut down the Dodgers en route to a 5-1, clinching victory.

This series will feature many familiar faces.  Former Dodgers Davy Lopes, Chan Ho Park and Jayson Werth are against their former team, much like Larry Bowa, Mariano Duncan, Jim Thome, Vicente Padilla, and Randy Wolf.

As the saying goes, history repeats itself.  Will Matt Stairs be the new Bill Russell?  Will Cliff Lee’s unavailablility until game three prove to be costly like Steve Carlton in 1978?  The umpires have missed several calls throughout the postseason; will there be another missed call as big as “Black Friday?”  These two teams can’t look at the past. They are looking to build their own legacy, and the Phillies hope it’s the same as 2008.  As Jimmy Rollins said: “it’s going to be one of those epic series.”

lot of ppl calling for a 7 gamer…

if the regular season is any indication…it could go that way.

    but in this game…who knows

zolecki just posted on his twitter the dodgers rotation..

not sure if this is the order..but if it is..it’s strange to me..

    he has

    Kershaw, Padilla, Kuroda, Wolf

i understand Kershaw…best stuff and lefty..
but Padilla in game 2? is that because Torre knows if he pitches in Philly the crowd will be all over him??

and Kuroda in a huge game 3? when he hasnt pitched in forever? yes, he has great numbers against phils…but he hasnt pitched in months..and game 3..in philly is wher eyou put him?

and then you leave your other lefty to game 4??

again…not sure if this is the order..but if it is…that’s very odd to me…very odd

Phils sweep. Anything less and they need to start trading some players.

I still find it amazing that Randy Wolf and Vicente Padilla are #’s 1 and 3 on their staff. I guess Billingsley fell apart and Kershaw is too green to step up as #1.

As i see it in my Phillies colored glasses, Cole wins game 1 because he likes to dominate the Dodgers. The Phils knock Kershaw around…again in game 2 and win a high scoring affair. Padilla is outpitched by Cliff Lee and poops his pants in front of Padilla’s Flotilla who change their name to Padilla’s Diarhea. Game 4 is over before it starts after Manny gives birth to twins because he was telling the truth all along and he wasn’t taking a masking agent, he was really trying to get pregnant.

“Phils sweep. Anything less and they need to start trading some players.” I have faith or should I say PHaith that is a joke? We would all like to see a sweep, HOWEVER, this Dodgers team is not a joke. It will be a hard fought series, and I hope for a sweep, but I think its unlikely, but really the part I have PHaith is a joke is the trading players off.

It will be highly important for the Phillies to score early and jump out to a quick comfortable lead on the Dodgers in this series. because of that LA bullpen.

joe, amazingly I am the only person in the history of the world who knows how to write but doesn’t know how to read.

Brian, yes it was a joke. Some impatient posters here start talking about trading players and panic after the Phils lose a game. Of course some can’t wait to take a starter out if he doesn’t get a 1-2-3 inning in the first. Some jump off bridges if the Phils fall behind by 2 early in a game. I mock those people.

    Yea, it’s gonna be
    1. Kershaw
    2. Padilla
    3. Kuroda
    4. Wolf

–I’m surprised Wolf, arguably their best one, will pitch fourth! Padilla not in Philly makes sense… but boy oh boy, at least they should’ve switched Wolf with Kuroda….

    I’m scared now because I’m feeling overconfident…

How do you beat Colorado and go to LA? Easy…Take Houston Street! Ha. Go Phils

Well I did start to freak in Game 4 when we went down in the 8th against the Rockies, and especially when it was 2 outs, but they came through. I freaked with 2 weeks left, and they started to play like the Mets, but I wasnt one of the ones who freaked before the all star break, or call for players to be traded.

Or you could take Hersey Highway like Cole Hamels did…..ha ha ha …oh man funny there is a Hersey Highway in Pa…..too funny.

The Phillies have beaten Kershaw twice this year. He has walked 7 batters in 10.1 innings against the Phillies. He has walked 91 batters in 171 innings.

Maybe Torre is playing a hunch to start him in Game 1.

I tried to post this on another thread and forgot to enter in my name while using my wife’s lap top.
It was good and I will try and do it again.
I think all you band wagon fans who thought the rockies series was over after the 8th on Monday should stop proving JRoll correct in his statements a few years back.
And did you see Charlie go to the mound on Sunday night and light a fire under lidge, Charlie made some “gut” decisions in that series and it worked out all right.
I think Cole and the rest of the Phillies deserve a pass after last year somewhat.
I think no matter what happens in this series, outside of a Dodger sweep which I do not think will happen, I think this team has defended it’s title with a lot of class and heart. I think the Phillies will win in 5 or 6, but some of you fans need to try to have some of what makes this team great.
Repeating is going to be hard, I hope, and believe they can do it, but if by some stroke of bad luck or timing they do not. They gave us a hell of a ride and have a lot of pride and play the game right. So get off their backs if they fail somewhere along the way.
Cole will step up tomorrow I believe that.
    Go PHILLIES
    BEAT LA

I have some kind of nerve to talk about anyone taking “hersey”highway because of what a fruity name I have. Rodger Dodger? Am I serious? Geez, am I seriously going to keep coming on this site obsessed with the phillies and their fans because of the ass kicking your team gave us last year? I can’t even spell “hersey”because I’m a total idiot. Rodger Dodger? Geez how queer is that?

Don’t mind me, my boyfriend posted the last one as we were well…Surfing the HERSHEY Highway. ;)

By the way I’m well aware that I spelled roger rodger up there but no matter how you add it up roger dodger is a really really gay name.

Clayton Kershaw was a very different pitcher before the break, when he faced the phils twice, and after the break, when he was the best pitcher in baseball.

Myers and Kendrick off the NLCS roster…

    Bruntlett and Chan Ho in….

Guess they actually need Bruntlett as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement in the late innings…

    Myers is pissed.

AND it looks like Pedro will pitch Game 2… I’m not giddy about this, especially since Blanton is the better pitcher of the two. Happ and Blanton will be available in the bullpen.

    Hamels better win tomorrow, yikes!

This series will never end. Not because of the games but the weather. They are predicting huge storms on the east coast. I bet you it will take over two to three weeks to play this out. baseball should be embarrased. most people moved on to the greatest sport in the world. NFL.

Blanton has been our top pitcher for most of the second half. How he is not started is amazing. Fire Charlie.

Honestly, how would you expect Myers to feel? He busted his butt to get back in time for the playoffs. I mean him and charlie seem to have problems. yes, myers is whatever anyone said he is but but it seems that he needs to go so that the choices to close are limited and/or they want some beardo idiot

By “epic” does he mean getting swept?

why cholly starting pedro game 2?blanton pitched at dodger stadium last year and we won the game thanks to stairs but come on pedro isn’t the guy who pitched for the red sox anymore you know…I can understand myers being dropped and bruntlett on we can use him pinch running in the late innings…kendrick no surprise either I hope park can pitch good because he’ll be huge addition if he’s 100%…

Its going to rain most of next week so I could see times adjusted around the weather. If hamels can win tonight then we can have at worst a split comming to the BANK which will be insane with Lee, Blanton and Hamels and so its a good chance it can be over in 5 agian.

Rain is supposed to go away by Sunday.. and the game is at 8pm.. so I hopefully they’ll play… I don’t want Clifton tooooo rested!

actually, weather looks pretty good for the philly games….
    Mon. 10/19
    High: 58 °F
    Low: 44 °F
    Mostly sunny and breezy

    Wed. 10/21
    High: 66 °F
    Low: 50 °F
    Mostly sunny

My main concern in all these games is the “odds”…Hamels has dominated the Dodgers, so much so that he is due for a dud. The opposite with Kershaw…he has stunk against the phils, and is due for a good game…hopefully the “odds” will hold off a little longer in our favor before they adjust accordingly. I also dont like this whole thing of so many Dodgers being X-Phils…if we lose a game in any form due to any of these bozos, its going to be even more painful. Like Jimmy said, this series is going to be “epic”….bring it on.

Ok I love being thew underdog but is anyone else just tired of everytime a Philly sports team is in the playoffs everyone roots or picks against them! Dodgers have been crap after the all-star break but everyone is riding them and all the national papers are talking Dodgers-yankees world series! Where is the respect!

Dodgers had the most wins in the National League… and beat the Cardinals, who most experts had vs. the Yankees to be in the World Series

Dodgers are a legit team, good lineup, great bench, great bullpen … starting pitching might be a problem..

sounds like the Phillies of 2008 …

Any of the 4 remaining teams could easily win the World Series, so I don’t take any stock in what any of the “experts” say .. they had to guess so they did

I think Phillies- Angels in the World Series, but thats just me..
