Phillies Stun Rockies, Clinch NLDS

Take a deep breath Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the National League Division Series with their 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies.  Just when all life was sucked out, the Phillies dramatically rallied in the ninth inning.

Cliff Lee was spectacular.  In 7.1 innings, Lee allowed three runs (1 earned).  He gave up five hits, walked three, and struck out five.  However, his dominant performance diminished when Ryan Madson came into relieve in the eighth.

Shane Victorino started the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning.  Jayson Werth’s home run in the sixth inning made it 2-0.  Troy Tulowitzki cut the lead in half with a RBI double against Lee in the bottom half of the sixth.

Lee started the eighth inning, but was replaced by Ryan Madson after the circus came to town.  Dexter Fowler reached with a walk.  Todd Helton hit a soft grounder to Chase Utley who reached out to tag Fowler, but he went airborne, leaping over Utley.  Utley flipped to Rollins at second, but he missed the catch.  Everybody was safe, and  Madson entered with one out as part of a key double switch.  Ben Francisco entered the game for Raul Ibanez and made a terrific diving catch, robbing Tulowitzski.

With two outs, Madson could see his way out of the inning.  How quickly a stellar performance from Lee and an amazing catch were erased.  Jason Giambi’s RBI single tied the game.

Yorvit Torrealba caused the Phillies a lot of trouble, homering off Cole Hamels earlier in the series.  He struck again, ripping the hearts out of Philadelphia fans all across the country with a two-run, go-ahead double that left him dancing for joy on second base.

It seemed as if the game was over – get ready for game five, they said.  The Phillies stranding the bases loaded twice proved to be too costly.  And why didn’t Charlie Manuel keep Lee in?  Well, let’s not forget the Phillies led the league in come from behind wins in 2009.  Once again, they showed their resilience.

With two outs in the ninth inning and Shane Victorino on second, Chase Utley drew a walk against closer Huston Street.  Then, Ryan Howard clobbered Street’s 2-1 offering over the head of Carlos Gonzalez.  Victorino rounded third, but missed the bag.  As he went back to tag, he saw Utley hot on his heels.  Victorino and Utley scored in sequence, tying the game at four.  Jayson Werth followed with a RBI single, giving the Phillies a 5-4 lead.

It was not Brad Lidge who started the ninth, but Scott Eyre.  Eyre rolled his ankle on Sunday night, but that did not stop the lefty from getting two quick outs.  He allowed two runners, which left it was up to Lidge to seal the deal.  He did as  Tulowitzski chased a nasty slider to end the game.

This game – and this entire series – will go down in the books as one of the greatest match-ups in Phillies franchise history.  The Rockies played the Phillies tough, but luckily the Phillies finished on top.  Los Angeles Dodgers, we’ll meet again on Thursday.

Wohoooooo! Great recap Amanda! I read it over and over again, and wow… it still hasn’t settled in!

Absolutely one of the best games and finishes I’ve ever seen.

I too was revving the car in the garage with the door closed (bad taste?) after Madson blew it. But like the team that I know and love, they came back when everyone but their own fa…when everyone INCLUDING their own fans had written off this game, started planning for game 5 and all that.

Howard, Werth, Lidge- you guys kick a$$.

This game will go down in history, people! Truly one for the ages.

That’s why we’re the defending champs! This team has the magic working again. Howard’s double is right up there with the all-time clutch hits in Phils history!!

I think that is the greatest game I’ve ever seen! I would have bet the house we would have gone to a Game 5.
Lights Out Lidge is back! On to LA and kick some butt there now!

I wonder where I little Rockie friend is?

well anyway great win, great series. I was sitting there silent when the 9th started just hoping that there was some fight left. and man was i happy when that 9th ended. and for the first time in A LONG TIME when lidge came in…I was not worried. I felt confident that he was going to get that out.

I am feeling good and things are sunny in Philadelphia.

Tulo must be pissed. He makes the final out on back to back nights with 2 men on base.

Last nights game was a nail biter – I was pacing from the 8th inning on – tonights game was moving – the Rockies were ready for game 5 after the bottom of the 8th – they were slapping and carrying on like they had won the NLDS before they won anything.
    Awesome -

Wow, just wow. This is what makes the Phillies different than any other sports team in the city. When the going gets tough they get tougher. For the second year a row LA comes of a sweep of a team that no-showed in the playoffs to face the real deal. Congrats Phillies now lets go get LA!

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: You turds on here who spew negativity and claim the Phils will lose the game, the series, their jobs, etc. when something goes wrong, go on the ESPN blog and spew your hatred and turdiness there. I just looked at the posts when the Phils were down in the 8th and they were disgusting. I understand you’re not going to be happy, but some of them were downright ridiculous. Some of you are sickening, cancerous dingle-berries. I applaud the few of you who actually showed some positivity and hope in tough times.

This game will go down in history. Crazy. It was always the Philliies that had the bad luck in the 9th. 11 blown saves during the season and the NLDS ends like this. This is special and hopefully a sign of good things to come! Go Phils.

Gotta say, great series win by the WFC’s. I’m definitely tipping my cap to the Rockies, though. Scrappy team who counter-punched almost every time. A good test to get us ready for the NLCS.

just like last year at the end of the season as the phils were chasing the mets i just couldnt watch all the action – way way too nervous!! – my kids and 5 of there friends were in the basement watching while i was above them in the living room switching channels – i would guage whether or not id switch channels and turn on the game by their squeels of joy or their moans – but then in the bottom of the ninth i just really couldnt even handle hearing them as lidge strolled to the mound – so i took my dog for a walk – but then turned and ran back to the house when i heard some kids in a house down the street scream for joy!! – although i have to admit the thought occurred to me that they might be from colorado!!!

agreed Thunder Lips, i don’t post anywhere near as much as i used to because the amount of negativity is ridiculous. i fought the good fight and stayed one of the few consistently positive fans around here last season, but it gets tiring dealing with knuckleheads game after game.

either way, love watching this team play. one hell of a series.

This was as tense as they come…but the fightins showed real heart and grittiness when they needed to. Hope they keep it up in the NLCS!

    1. i’m so glad I won’t have to watch that douche rockies fan pump his fist after every f’n pitch
    2. i will tip my cap to the rockies… they are annoying
    3. where are the ryan howard haters now?? the man is a once in a life time player…and the phillies are lucky to have him
    4. werth is the most underrated player in the game
    5. the phillies have the best top 5 hitters in the game…period.
    6 pedro killed me tonight
    7. clifford is the real deal
    8. brad lidge is lights out…i wasn’t nervous at all
    9. BEAT LA! (again)

Still in amazement. Great comeback by the Phils. Now lets go get the dodgers!!!!

    Unbelievable win!

I could barely watch the 9th…pacing in front of the TV. Thought they had a chance if they could get Howard to the plate. The Big Man is clutch!!!!!

(Everyone remember that and lay off him when he strikes out three times next May in Washington.) He’s CLUTCH!

Props to the Rockies, too. That team showed me something. Jiminez was filthy tonight. And the Gonzalez kid is unreal. Better player right now than Holliday. Great year for Colorado, but the Phils are just too mentally tough.

Showed the heart of a champion tonight.

Now, say it and say it loud: Beat LA!

LOL someone else noticed the guy in second row behind home? In the white shirt with the pom poms?
Me and my buddys nicknamed him D.B. Cooper. As in Douche bag.

Christopher, I thought I was the only one. I still come here for updates and stuff – but this blog is completely different than it was one year ago – its way, WAY more negative than it needs to be.

Andrew that guy was annoying me so bad…every pitch he pumped his fist ..and then when the ball was clearly low, he’d yell at the ump..
    typical douche band wagon fan

    and another thing…
some of YOU FANS…need to check yourself… every time the phillies have a set back you hate them and jimmy sucks and shouldnt lead off and madson shouldnt pitch ever again

he made a GREAT pitch to tulo…. and he made a GREAT pitch to giambi… both guys fought pitches off and barely got wood on them

his only mistake was to yorvit..

    just relax…or dont be fans

The old man. I agree hes not a great day of game regular season manager. But no other manager gets 2 saves out of lidge in the NLDS. There is something very special about him handling this group. He isnt a great manager at all. Most of the critisism over the year is correct. But there isnt any other human being I want managing this team now. I like the chances here vs the dodgers. Tongihts game is probably the second best game for me ever behind the dodgers game game last year with the Shane and Stairs homers. Its very close.
what a game. all hail the old man and Brad. and all the boys fighting with 2 outs and 2 strikes. Even J roll did it in the 9th. We are fighters. You want to beat the champs you should have to beat the champs.
I like our chances vs Randy wolf in game 1. cole is due to be good.
    what a night.

MP and Christopher, thanks for sticking with us, even through some of the negativity. It’s not always going to be pretty with some, many just dont know how to handle it …

I know that when you expect the worst it certainly makes the best pretty good. But as a whole, come on Nation, let’s be positive throughout. This team has shown its capable of great things, so stay positive.

I don’t know what came over me tonight, but through out the 8th inning when everything went to crap, I still knew the Phillies were going to win. My girlfriend was going nuts, but I just had a feeling.

But my nerves were a little scared, so I grabbed a beer, out of the fridge, and it was a Magic Hat, and they always have a goofy little hippie message on the cap. and I read it, and it said, “Now is the Golden time.” And then I got nervous when I realized Golden is also a city in Colorado, and it is where Coors is brewed. And even when Shane hit into the fielder’s choice, I still felt like it was just a matter of who would tie it up.

What a great game. What a great team. I still can not believe they won that game. And the best part is that I get $90 back from the tickets I had for tomorrow’s game.

Last night, at around 12:45, I was getting tired, and had to go to bed. I was falling alseep. And I realized that with my schedule,I would not get to see most of today’s game, and if they lost, it could be the last game of the year I got to see. I laid in bed and listened to it on the radio, and fell asleep when Rollins got on first. I woke up about 30 minutes later to the sound of Larry Andersen screaming like a madman. I can’t wait for the Dodgers, can’t wait to ruin their season again.

How can you not be positive? A world series and now this.
Does being frustrated with Hamels count as being negative? lol
no matter what this team and all the players are special in my heart forever. no matter what happens in the future. Especially Lidge and the old man.
I love the chances vs the dodgers. I even like them hosting games 1 2 6 and 7.
It really doesnt get any better than these last 2 years. What a pleasure. I have gotten the baseball package the last 2 years and have seen every game. It really is the most magical ride.

    lets go boys..

    LETS GO!

Cole Hamels pitching in LA in the first game of the NLCS on national TV. If that does not stroke his ego, nothing well. I am expecting the best from him.

I just realized what made me think the Phillies were going to win. It was the way Torrealba was celebrating at 2nd after his big hit in the 8th. I knew the Phillies weren’t going to tolerate it. And Werth did a similar move when he got his hit in the 9th.

I was thinking I saw a tear in Torrelas eye after they lost in the dugout. Well I was hoping but he looked dejected.
I like colorados team and that pitcher that we beat 2 times in this series. Jimenez is amazing. I wish him the best. I mean we beat him both of his starts I know he didnt take the loss personaly.

I think the one of the most important side effects of winning tonight was that it lets Cole pitch in Game 1. Chavez Ravine has been the location of some of his most inspired performances, and I have every expectation that Hamels will live up to his Game 1 pedigree.

As each of these postseason games go by, I just get happier and happier watching this team play baseball. It’s a real joy. They make make you wanna hit the bottle every now and then, but even at their most maddening, they still have that special feeling about them. Win, lose, or draw, this has been a fun past few seasons of baseball to watch. I can’t wait till the curtain comes up on the latest chapter against Joe Torre, Randy Wolf, and Captain Steroid.

It’s been better than almost every movie I’ve seen this year. Phils. Dodgers. Rematch. I love the smell of October.

I live downtown and the reaction I got when I went to the store wearing my Phillies jacket/cap after the game was unbelievable…. Everyone’s high fiving each other…. Cute girls screaming at the top of their lungs “Let’s Go Phillies!” it is truly amazing…. The greatest game this post season so far. Yes, better than Game 3 of Redsox/Angels series…

That game was pretty much a snooze fest until the 8th/9th inngs… This one had action pretty much the the whole game. This may turn out to be the “Greatest MLB post season game in the modern era “that no one ever saw.” That’s exactly what you get MLB/TBS….. Eat sh*t….

Game of the SEASON (so far). I welcome the Dodgers for another chance… it’ll make our second straight LCS win that much sweeter, not to mention we can finally return the favor of getting beat by LA in ’77 and ’78 and take the lead in our LCS all-time matchup… History in the making Nation.

The only question now is: Will Mr. Ryan Howard finally get his due? A-Rod was worshiped for his heroics by everyone… If Big Papi did what Howard did tonite he would get his own segment….. I hope Howard does because he is long over do….

What a great series. The Rockies are an excellent team, and I think they’ll be a force to be reckoned with for a while.

But, it’s all about the Phils, what a great 9th! Now bring on the Dodgers!!!

Irony: the most exciting play-off series so far and it gets thrown under the tv ratings bus…the one closer who crapped the bed all year comes thru in the play-offs! Joe Nathan hershey squirts, Papelbon has an enema, Ryan Franklin couldn’t get enough toilet paper, Houston Street (i don’t speak ill of a recently defeated foe)…I guess that leaves the Ice Man. Fuentes and Broxton. Broxton… still smell the fear from last year.

Baseball Tonight still favors the Dodgers….fine by me…we seem to rise to the occasion when we have somthing prove. Definition of scrappy: the more your told you can’t, the greater the resolve….

my dad and I couldnt stand listening to the tbs announcers blow the rockies anymore and I just couldnt stand to hear their lame ass fans, so we sat there in silence, until howard hit the most clutch double of my life.

jreed… great post dude….. Doesn’t this team make you feel like your 5 years old all over again? The age when Santa Clause was real, when the Easter Bunny wowed you, when the Tooth Fairy brought you cash money and you had not a worry in the world (unless you were Jacko or the Olson twins). Or the present day, when Lidge said he was confident that we would see the ’08 Lidge again this October….

I’m so much in shock right now that I’m scared to watch the hight lights because I feel that the baseball God’s might reverse the results….

-Not only did we win the series, but we closed it out on the road…. You know the Dodgers were watching tonite…. This win had to induce a clear reminder that the Phils aren’t intimidated by road games… They thrive on them….

them tbs announcers were rockies biased…i hope they aren’t doing the NLCS…i think it’ll be the guys that did the twins and yankees series.

TBS’s production of these playoffs is God awful… They never show the right angles on replays. During live action they don’t follow the ball very well at all….. Tim McC is annoying, but that’s better than this…..
