Gameday 2009, Posts, World Series 2009
New York Yankees (1-1) at Philadelphia Phillies (1-1)
Andy Pettitte, LHP vs. Cole Hamels, LHP
Time: 7:57 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Few Showers, 69 degrees
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation
When asked if this year felt “more like a World Series” compared to last year’s, Jimmy Rollins responded: “when we get to Philly, it will.” The Fall Classic moves to the city of brotherly love with the series split at a game apiece. The Phillies are 11-1 at home in the postseason since 2008. “It makes it a lot more fun, because you know they’re your fans, and you know how that sound can echo off your ears when they’re not your fans,” Rollins said.
Cole Hamels starts defending his World Series MVP award tonight, but he isn’t going to win back-to-back MVPs unless he has an outstanding start tonight. His 2008 postseason heroics are almost forgotten with his 1-1, 6.75 ERA during this year’s playoffs. Cole has allowed 20 hits in 14.1 innings, but has only allowed two walks. Not only does he need to limit the hits, but Hamels needs to keep the ball in the yard. In his career against the Yankees, Hamels is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA.
Hamels will be opposed by Andy Pettitte, the all-time leader in postseason wins and career pickoffs. Pettitte is a finesse pitcher, not overpowering; however, he has stretches where he lacks command. In all of his starts this postseason, the lefty lasted 6.1 innings and did not allowed more than three runs. In May, Pettitte allowed four runs over seven innings against the Phillies. He hasn’t pitched at Citizens Bank Park since 2006.
On Thursday, A.J Burnett was magnificent, and there wasn’t much that the Phillies could do. Today, the right-handed bats will need to step it up, as Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Raul Ibanez are a combined 8-for-37 against Pettitte.
Phillies lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).
Greg Dobbs is available after recovering from the flu.
Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Damon (LF), Teixeira (1B), A-Rod (3B), Posada (C), Cano (2B), Swisher (RF), Cabrera (CF), Pettitte (P).
No DH tonight, Yankees.
Your Gameday Beer – Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter
On a night like tonight, this is the beer you need. Brewed by Midnight Sun Brewing out of Alaska, this thick dark beer pours like melted chocolate. However neither the chocolate nor pumpkin flavors are overwhelming. The scents of molasses, gingerbread, and roasted malts help to polish this brew into something delicious. It goes well with BBQ, but tonight have it alongside the candy intended for trick-or-treaters. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES!

I hate joining these boards late, but not a great day of pitching. Cole had 3 good innings followed by utter crap, Happ started off pretty good out of the bullpen, and then it really go ugly. 5 runs without even getting an out in the 5th inning is bad enough.

I think Ed said it best earlier – I don’t think I’ve been this disappointed in a while. Everything started off brilliantly. Pettite was smacked around and Cole looks so sharp for 3. Introduce the CB and get blasted. It’s been an avalanche since then…
That 15min storm can’t come soon enough, huh?

phils will win 1 at the bank, but really they need to win the next 2. If they go back to NY down 3-2, forget about it.

i admire u – u r a believer – even if not a realist…
unless the enitre offense turns on the proverbial switch at once.
they will be lucky to get 4 AB’s in the 8th – let alone 4 runs

I don’t know about anything but I truly think the team will come out on a mission tomorrow. This is too good of a group to just die. Blanton has the potential to be okay……..be positive guys…or try to. :*(
Happ should have been a starter in a game…..he came in at a bad time, i have confidence in him anyway

I agree AC – they’ve got to win the next 2 and go back to NY with the advantage. CC will be scared/tired tomorrow, and Yanks game 5 is.. Gaudain? We definitely have a shot.
Man, the crowd at the Bank is complacent…

As for Jeff g, and other possible idiots flipping out, are you by chance forgetting that you are Watching the Phillies in WORLD SERIES? Seriously people, I agree this is a bad game, and Queen Cole has screwed us this post season never lasting more than 6 innings in any start, and this game is probably over seeing the closer they have, and hopefully the Phillies bats can come alive again and tie up the series. But still, this is the 2nd straight year we are watching out favorite team in the World Series. Let the idiot haters talk, because the only fans that should be opening their mouths at all should be Yankmees fans and Phillies PHans. All the rest of the “fans”/Trolls/Haters should get a life and realize their team obviously screwed the pooch and either missed the playoffs, or lost to the Phillies. However with all that said, Howard striking out 4 times in Game 2 and 3 times tonight is rather PATHETIC. He is obviously done. Maybe he peaked to early? Not sure.

howard struck out, but the first 2 called strikes were garbage calls by the sh*ttiest ump on the crew, gorman, who’s been absolute crap tonite.

the yankees had the same ump…
the phillies could not get clutch hitting or pitching
unless they get it together quickly… they will sink further
I HOPE I AM WRONG……

Well hit ball right to ARod. I doubt they’ll bring Rivera in for two innings with a 4 run lead.

I’m going to the eagles game tomorrow, when I leave the linc any yankees fans I see I will beat the holy hell out of. LOL….Kidding……No matter what happens tonight, we have a lot of baseball left. No need to get depressed tonight, tomorrow will be here before you know it

The first two pitches on Howard might been junk calls, but the 3rd strike couldnt be called a strike by a blind man. Howard is hot and cold. He just happens to have gotten cold in the World Series this season back to swinging at utter crap. Hopefully they can come back tomorrow and win it. If they lose tomorrow, they are done. So lets hope this spark starts in the 9th, and at least get some of the runs back.

A really disappointing loss if we lose, but if we somehow beat Sabathia tomorrow, we go into Game 5 with Lee vs. Burnett.
We can still win this series!

The worst part of this entire series is my love for the phillies is equalled by bitter hatred for the yankees. Always will love the phils always loathe the yanks.

anyone who thinks this series is over if they do not manage to come back in the 9th and win this game, (I still have faith) is crazy.
Why are you people all of the sudden affraid of CC especially on 3 days rest. We hit him before we can hit him again.
that is why they play 7 games, even if they do not pull this off all they have to do is win today, Sunday night, and then game 5 is the biggest game, and Cliff will be pitching, so stop saying this series is over it is only one game out of seven. Have a little faith

Well done Brian of Co. Good to see you.
Look tonight’s game might be over but tomorrow is a new day. And like Brian said, this is the world series, two years in a row for our guys. If you are really that pissed about this then go root for the Pirates because I will bet dollars to dimes that you won’t have to worry about your team losing in the W.S for the next 20 years.
The offense needs to wake up in a big way, otherwise it won’t matter what Blanton does tomorrow.
Also, if I am Girardi I do not put Mo in tonight. Save him for the next two days. But I am not Girardi so whatever.

TO-NIGHT BARRING A MIRACLE…IS OVER, &
i can’t see blanton out dueling chunky cheese sabathia. even if joe pitches well,
since the phillies bats went to sleep since game 2… howard is atrocious & utley and ibanez the same – reality is – how can they win – if only 1 or 2 players are getting on base and driving in runs. and their bullpen cannot keep the ball in the yard?

@Ray, no need to get depressed at all IMO. Dissapointed yes, but we are still watching the 2nd straight World Series.

Brian of CO: Were you watching the entire game? If you have, and you saw Cole go 1-2-3 in the first, and the Phillies then take a 3-0 lead, and then the umpires give A-roid the 2-run HR, and now watch every bp guy give up a run… you HAVE to be depressed. I really haven’t felt this sad in a long time.

It’s not about flipping out. Ok maybe a little. But it is more about projection. The best way to knock off a team like this Yankee ball club with our suspect starting pitching(Charlie strange moves) is to do it quickly. That’s why I picked the Phills in 4 or 5 games. Who pitches a potential Game 6 yet alone a Game 7??? Why didn’t Charlie at least have Cliff Lee prepare to start Game 4. At least give yourself the option. Even if you keep it to yourself. A win tomm and the dream is still alive. But if we don’t we all know the truth….

@Ed R and J Reed, great to be back. Brian Jr is doing well thanks for asking guys. He was hit with Thrush (very minor infection), but got him some antibiotics and is doing MUCH better now. I still need to upload pictures to a site besides Facebook so I can upload Jr’s picture and the picture of his Phillies Room! :)

Not that I am all that impressed or afraid of Sabathia. We did only manage to Utley solo jobs off of him in 7 innings, and that was apparently when our offense(minus Werth) was not in a collective slump.

Well at least, if we do lose this, we can watch Ricky B. ream Hamels which he full deserves….Ed R. funny how Hamels got burned by Manny with three straight change-ups and then with swisher three straight curve balls though that obviously didn’t go out but set the stage for the the collapse tonight. WTF is going thru his mind…Boy Madson got robbed by the ump with that walk to ARod…
