Happ lost it because in the last part of the season and postseason he was used rarely. He is a starter and had been doing the training and work as a starter most of the season. When he got put out in the bullpen and sat out there pitching rarely…..he might have lost the strength/ability to excel in the starting spot…..Blanton was similar

Lol so 1 hot HALF of the year wins someone a ROY? Maybe Tori Hunter should had won MVP this year then. His first half of the year was amazing. Happ led a world series running up team for most of a season. I still am not convinced Coghlan should had won…

I’m disappointed that Happ didn’t win. Awarding for hot half is not unprecedented though, remember Ryan Howard’s rookie year??!!

Well USA Today Sports said Coghlan should win because he was on a contending team. It’s not the matter that I just wanted Happ to win but he did participate for the whole season where Coghlan only played one hot half. Happ was a major contributor to the Phils contending and winning the division in 2009.

Don’t forget that Coghlan was also an infielder and was moved over to outfield a short time before he was called up. He played some pretty solid defense for a guy who spent his whole career playing in the infield.

Not winning the division has nothing to do with someone having a great year. Let’s give Coghlan some credit. A .321 average is nothing to sneeze at, nor is leading the league in hits after the all-star break.

Happ had a wonderful year, performing beyond everyone’s expectations, but a late season injury killed his season. He didn’t actually play the whole season, due to that injury, and his numbers afterward were mediocre.

ROY isn’t exactly the fairest award, anyway. Happ made his debut in 2007, and pitched quite a bit in 2008. It’s a mere technicality that he was a rookie, anyway. Ichiro Suzuki also won ROY when he joined the majors, even though he’d been a star for years in Japan. So what’s a real rookie, anyway?

We all wanted Happ to win, and he almost did. I’m sure Braves fans wanted Hanson. Cubs fans probably wanted their guy.

I wanted Happ to win, too, but I’m not crying about his loss to another really good player.

I’m not being a good sport about this. This is garbage. Happ was our best pitcher a lot of the year, and was unbeaten in starts after a loss. Coghlan had a nice year for a team that was doomed to second or third, not exactly the kind of pressure Happ faced. Sorry, i’m not being a good sport about this.

Having written that, I would love to see the Phillies pick up Adrian Beltre for 3b, Ronnie Belliard for utility and Rafael Soriano for the bullpen. We have the need for another starter, and we have options. Some of those options seem a little too expensive, and it would be unwise to make a move before extending Cliff Lee. I would love to take a risk with a strikeout pitcher/type-B free agent pitcher like Rich Harden.

It was a great rookie season, and it was great to see a Philly rookie pitcher show up in the way that Happ showed up. Tommy Hanson has better “stuff,” and Coghlan won the award, but Happ was simply great as well. For some reason, I feel that the Phillies need to recognize that Happ will never again possess such good trade value. I love Happ. I still believe that Joe Blanton was the organization’s most consistent starter this year, but Happ’s numbers really mark him as the regular season ace of the 2009 NL Champion Phillies. I just don’t know how much better he can get. With our club, and the age of our starting line-up (especially if we bring in a 30+ 3B), we need to continue to win now and the best chance any club has of doing that is by bringing in an established pitcher. Just look what we did with Cliff Lee.

If you look at the vote totals, Happ was the only player listed on all ballots. If only a few of the third place votes had been second place votes, he would have won. I think the fact that his peers voted him ROY and all voters included him on the ballot speaks volumes of the respect he earned this year. Would have loved to have seen him get a start in the world series…..bet he will in the 2010 Series!!

Coghlin is an everyday player. Happ, my favorite candidate, is a pitcher. I hated to see Happ lose, but understand the reasoning. It is a tough break for Happ. Maybe it will motivate him to win the Cy Young Award next year.

I was rooting for Happ naturally, but Coghlan really was impressive for the Marlins. The result didn’t surprise me.
